Great story
I'm only part way into reading this book - but it's one of those that I can't put down. Not only is it well written, but it is also a fascinating study of the period and a well developed cast of characters. I'm thoroughly enjoying Pillars of the Earth.

Peter James

Acceptable as an airplane book.
Like many readers, I first knew Peter James from his horror novels. I have been reading these Roy Grace detective novels with some interest, although I have to say that I still find myself missing something in his work. Not Dead Enough spins a tale about a man who is a seemingly obvious murder suspect, if it only were not for the fact that it required him to to be in two places at the same ...

Another Excellent Book by Preston
Tyrannosaur Canyon is another great book by Douglas Preston. The characters are great. There's Tom Broadbent, who we got to know in "The Codex." We now meet Wyamn Ford. I love these two characters. Tom Broadbent's wife plays a big part in the story, too. She's a thorougly modern woman and displays a lot of courage and initiative in the face of danger. I was very interested in reading the ...

Seven riveting wonders
Reilly's back and his latest thriller explodes off the page with the force of tornado. He introduces us to a new character, Australian superhero and all-round good-guy, Jack West Jr., whom we meet on the run with nine other people, one of which is a 10yr old girl, named Lily, (which explains the subsequent names) and the rest are Wizard, Woodsman, Fuzzy, Stretch, Princess Zoe, Pooh Bear, Noddy ...

Penguins are a force for change
John Kotter has given change agents like me a great manual to introduce the concepts of change to a board audience. As a professed change agent who has worked in the academic and public sector for over 40 years, I have found this little book and its story to be an extremely powerful teaching tool. The penguin and iceberg metaphors work and resonates with even the most sophisticated audiences. ...

Grafton Is Back!
I loved this newest tale in the Kinsey Millhone series. Like a lot of readers, I had begun to think Sue Grafton had run her course and couldn't come up with anything exciting and new. Trespass was a great read. I couldn't put it down. I sincerely hope the rest of the alphabet keeps pace.

Another winner for Dick Francis
I bought "Under Orders" 2 days ago and just finished reading it this morning. Housework and eating fell to the wayside as I entered the world of Sid Hadley, Jockey turned Private Investigator. Dick Franicis never fails to weave several plot lines together for an exciting ending. This book also lets the reader enter the real world of Police Departments lack of funding, how computers are enabling ...

Giles Milton

A cheesy romp
This mild and amusing tale doesn't fit neatly in any particular genre. It's almost a mystery, but not quite. It's almost a comedy of manners, but not quite. But it is a very English tale featuring lots of delectable cheese, an extraordinary nose and a cadre of mysterious Greeks. Does the world contain cheese shops like Trencoms? I don't know, but after finishing this book, my mouth is watering, ...

David Baldacci

Baldacci can do better.
I loved the "King and Maxwell" series Baldacci has been writing, but I think this book is probably the weakest in the trilogy. The story developed for this book had great potential, but the characters in it were underdeveloped and uninspiring, and the details of the story were often unclear. Overall, the book seemed somewhat rushed. It's a good read if you like Baldacci, but it's definitely ...

couldn't put it down!
This is a fun story and a great read! I read the book in one night because I kept wanting more and was so curious to find out what happened next. Great Characters and an interesting storyline that strays from just the typical 'chick lit' story. I would highly recommend!

Deborah Crombie

good, better, best!
Deborah Crombie's James & Kincaid series just gets better and better. Here the setting is Southwark, not a usual venue for London-loving writers. As always, Crombie provides a physical map with her text, although her descriptions of place are so excellent that it's ironically unnecessary. The aged warehouses oozing toward oblivion in the Thames, the aggressive marks of gentrification (for an ...
Essays in Love

Alain DeBotton

A Brilliant Study
This is a kind of hybrid novel/philosophical study of romantic love. The plot is, on the surface, a rather conventional one; a man and woman meet and fall in love. Most of the book, however, consists of the narrator (the male lover) reflecting on each stage of the process, from initial attraction to the despair of love's departure. What is perhaps most striking about Essays In Love is how Alain ...
