Music: An Appreciation

A Good Overview of Music in Context
This book does a good job of putting music in an overall historical context. For example, it notes how Baroque productions, whether sculpture or music, meant to "fill space." That accounts for elaborate melodies in music, and movement in painting and sculpture. Music used to be written as much for the mind as the ear. In some vocal pieces, lyrics correspond to melody. For example, if the ...

Powerful!!!
N.Scott Momaday like myself is a Native Oklahoman, and that makes me proud. His work is a work of Native power; it breathes in and breathes out as if it were a living being. The Pulitzer Prize was definitely well-deserved in the case of this book. There is an almost magical sense of being to the characters. Like the overwhelming majority of the people in this state, I am a mix of several Native ...

Good ideas for your students
I love the thought of this book -- an art book for teachers who may not know much about art, but are planning on teaching art to their students. It's a great idea, and the book covers a great deal of information in a thin volume, from the principles of art, to the schools of artists and their works, to methods used to create art, to visiting the museum. The book also contains suggested projects ...
Exploring Social Psychology
David Myers
Mcgraw-Hill College, 2006
Exploring Social Psychology provides a brief and economical introduction to social psychology, which presents concepts and findings in smaller bites - 30 modules that are crisp, concise, and ideally suited to students' attention spans. Written in the engaging Myers style the text attempts to reveal social psychology as an investigative reporter might, by providing a current summary of important social phenomena by showing how social psychology ...

This book not only contains a lot of excellent literature, but it also gives instruction on how to read and analyze literature more effectively. This is a book I come back to again and again.
Tonal Harmony, With an Introduction to Twentieth-Century Music

Excellent Harmony Text
This is an excellent introduction, covering most aspects of theory thoroughly. It is also MUCH easier to read than Walter Piston's Harmony. The problem is that this book is much more abstract than piston's book, breezes over inversions of chords much too quickly and is a tad lax in the rules of voice leading. I do suggest you consider that text as well. It's still a good introduction that ...

From Tragedy to Triumph
Now in its 8th edition, and now combined as two volumes in one, "From Slavery to Freedom" is an indispensable primer on African American historiography. Sweeping, even epic in its expanse, John Hope Franklin's overview of the African American experience, from African freedom to American enslavement, to American freedom, is the place to start to introduce oneself to this vital topic. This popular anthology continues to be one of the broadest and best introductions to the four genres of literature-fiction, poetry, drama, and the essay-making it appropriate for both Introduction to Literature courses and composition courses that incorporate literature. Known for its exceptionally clear presentation of the elements of literature and for its innovative and beautifully illustrated poetry section featuring full-color art, ...

Good book for in class work
I think this is a good textbook for a class. The lessons cover a little cultural information, new information, and some review exercises. The white classwork pages are separated from the blue homework pages which are separate from the yellow-bordered vocab pages. The homework pages have the answers in the back so you don't have to wait for the teacher to review your work. The vocab is ...
