Needs to be Read and Shared over and over again!
The book Presidential Praise should be in the library of every musician, theologian and historian! The scholarship and attention to detail that Ed Spann and Mike Williams have shared in this book combine to tell the story of faith in the lives of our presidents that needs to be told. This book makes history come alive in so many ways and on so many levels. While it is a historical book, it is ...

Baptist Theology: A Four-Century Study (Baptist Series)

James Leo, Jr. Garrett
Mercer University Press, 2009
Baptist Historical Theology at its Best
Baptist Theology by James Garrett is one of the most comprehensive studies of Baptist historical theology ever written. Dr. Garrett puts half a century of academic theological experience to use by meticulously documenting the development of Baptist theology through the four centuries following their emergence in England and Continental Europe to the present day. He also addresses many ...
BIBLICAL ETHICS

A good ethical survey of the Bible
Maston's book is regarded as a classic in Christian ethics among many conservatives. He divides his book into eight sections and surveys the ethical emphases of each: Law, Prophets, Writings, Apocryphal and Intertestamental Literature, Synoptic Gospels, Paul, Johnannine Literature and Other New Testament Writings. Maston does a good job of noting the ethical teachings of each section but also ...

A great book about what it says it's about
As the book itself says, this isn't a comprehensive study of the ABB. What it is is a nice series of cronological essays about Willie's time with and around the ABB. It is a quick but satifying read and a must for any fan of the ABB or music of the late 60s and 70s. It is a nice view into those lived it.
The Spiritual Journal of Henry David Thoreau
Malcolm Clemens Young
Mercer University Press, 2009
This title explores the religious nature of "Thoreau's Journal". Most people who care about nature cannot help but use religious language to describe their experience of it. We can trace many of these conceptions of nature and holiness directly to influential nineteenth-century writers, especially Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862). In Walden, he writes that 'God himself culminates in the present moment', and that in nature we encounter, 'the ...

A Penley Lincoln in the White House
Steve Penley's work grows more interesting with each canvas and this newest book. His brilliant style blends his love of American history and current events and Steve does not shy away from sharing his opinions with the readers. Isn't it amazing this conservative political devotee has offered to give a portrait of Abraham Lincoln to President and Mrs. Obama for their private White House ...

An extraordinary life!
This book will appeal to many kinds of readers. It has everything - history, adventure, and biography. I began thumbing through it expecting to set it aside and read the whole book in an afternoon. What a life. And what determination. The first half of the book is excellent - it covers Judge Alaimo's WWII experience as pilot and German POW (he was involved in some of the real life events ...

THE HEBREW GOSPEL OF MATTHEW

George Howard

A very thorough treatment of a mysterious text
This is a high-quality, scholarly review of a little-known text that may, in fact be a direct descendant of Matthew's original Gospel. The book benefits from Howard's insightful commentary and considered opinions. The are plenty of notes on the text and translation that allow the serious student room for further study. Makes a fascinating companion alongside a Talmud/Mishnah for comparing word ...
Invisible Hero: Patrick R. Cleburne

Invisible Hero Comes to Life in Print
Bruce Stewart's recent biography of Patrick Cleburne provides some fascinating insights into his subject. The author obviously adores his subject, but is not blind to the Arkansas general's mistakes. His bibiliography is strong, and contains all of the available biographies on the "Stonewall of the West." The book concentrates on General Cleburne's military career, without providing enough ...
Blind Obedience: A True Story of Family Loyalty and Murder in South Georgia

Bill Boyd

Take a journey back in time......
Being involved in the modern day south Georgia legal system and a one-time resident of Lowndes County, I thoroughly enjoyed this very detailed and well-written novel. The author's attention to the details of the trial and testimony is very exact, but the narrative flows almost like a suspenseful thriller. It is obvious the author spent a great deal of time talking to people about the background ...

Good Southern Storytelling
Benjy Griffith has skillfully spun a wonderful, colorful tale with memorable characters who come alive on each page. I would highly recommend it for anyone who wants to be thoroughly entertained by great Southern storytelling. It does not disappoint. Benjy Griffith has given readers a true Southern treasure.

Why has Amazon.com refused to show the review I submitted for this book?
I am a Melungeon descendant who formerly wrote a column on the topic in a history journal. I wrote an extensive review with some context for my remarks for Amazon, but it was refused. I rewrote it and it was still refused. From the point-of-view of those who have already read a great deal on the subject, and from the point-of-view of those involved in discussions about Melungeons (for whom this ...

This work offers a look at the history of Georgia through over 100 primary documents. "The Empire State of the South: Georgia History in Documents and Essays" offers teachers of Georgia history an alternative to the traditional narrative textbook. In this volume, students have the opportunity to read Georgia history rather than reading about Georgia history. Encompassing the entirety of Georgia history into the twenty-first century, "The Empire ...
WHY CONSERVATIVE CHURCHES ARE GROWING: A Study in Sociology of Religion with a new Preface (Rose, No. 11)

Dean M. Kelley
Mercer University Press, 1996
Important Book for Students of American Religion
In 1969 Peter Berger told the New York Times that religious people would soon be huddled together in little enclaves, surrounded by a sea of secularity. In doing so, he was simply making explicit the philosophy of history implicit in social theory since its founding. According to this philosophy, Christianity became Protestant, then liberal Protestant, then vaguely and privately spiritual, ...

The Best Overview of Melungeons
Of all the books about Melungeons, this is the one you want to own. In an unbiased manner, Winkler gives a complete overview of the history and legends of the Melungeons, reviews all the theories, and is as objective a writer as you would want to find. He has no ax to grind or theory to promote; he wants the reader to understand all the theories and make their own judgments. All he asks is that ...
The Tragedy and the Triumph of Phenix City, Alabama

Margaret Anne Barnes

Hard to Believe
This book details how a small town can take advantage of others all for the love of money and power. People are cheated, beaten, locked up in jail and even murdered to protect an illegal way of life. It really is hard to believe that something like this could happen even in the 1950's. Phenix City had been so corrupt for so long that it took the National Gaurd to clean it up. I could only ...

A book for the entire family
I'll preface this review by revealing that the author is my father's first cousin. Which makes it all the more surprising to me that this fascinating account of a family's successful flight from Hitler during World War II is beautifully written. It's a suspenseful voyage that is stranger than fiction, and a testament to the value of family and the determination of the oppressed to reach ...
