Exciting and orignal book for children!
The illustrations in this book are terrific! The story revolves around three lines that are friends and the language is amazing. Mem Fox is a wonderfully creative author. A fellow teacher shared this book with me. She fell in love with it at the Florida Reading Association conference last month and just had to buy it. We are studying intersecting lines, parallel lines and perpindicular lines in ...

The Legend of the Hummingbird
I use this book to teach elementary school children about Puerto Rico. The story as well as the illustrations teach the reader about the history and climate/vegitation of Puerto Rico. The last five pages include information about Puerto Rico's history and traditions. More examples of legends are also included, providing a starting point for the children to create their own transformation tales.

Seahorses in their ocean heaven
I can't believe no one else has taken time to review this lovely book. It shows over several colorful photos of different kinds of seahorses. There are 37 different kinds. The author explains simply but comprehensively the parts of their bodies. The photos are large and brilliant. Correction there are more than several photos, much more!!! Absolutely amazing!!!

Grand Central Terminal: Gateway to New York City

Ed Stanley
Mondo Publishing, 2003
great building; great book
As this interesting new book tells us, there is a lot more to Grand Central Terminal than the present building. The story behind the Terminal is fascinating, and it's told here in a compelling, accessible fashion that both competent young readers and adults can enjoy. Author has a warm, chatty style that works well for the story, which gets complex at times. Book is gorgeous to look at as ...

This book was extremely helpful.
My three year old girl had tubes put in her ears a few weeks ago. We stumbled upon this book prior to her surgery. She read it over and over again. It became her favorite book for quite a while. There is no question that this book helped her prepare for this stressful event. The pictures and text manage to provide frank and detailed information about getting tubes without being frightening. ...

Journey to a New Land: An Oral History
What a wonderful family history to share with our children and grandchildren! My husband came to America from Italy in the 1950's and I have heard similar stories of his family's voyage to this "New Land" for many years. As we read the book, he talked about his own experiences after leaving his home in Vallecuppa, Italy and arriving in New York as an eleven year old. He, like Elda, lost his ...

Wonderful Story about a Clever Woman
This story is about an ogre who tries to force a "wee wishy woman" into living in his home and cooking for him and how she stays cool and calm, outsmarts him, and then escapes. The story is written in verse--about one four-line verse per page. My two year old loves this book, but I think an older child (four to eight years old) would enjoy it even more.

"Zoo Looking is a great book for Daddy reading"
Every night at story time, my husband complained about the lack of Daddies in picture books. But that was before he read this book. It's a very sweet story about a father and daughter's day trip to the zoo. The rhymes are catchy and clever and the pictures draw you into the story. This book is one our little daughter asks for again and again!

If Peace Is...

Jane Baskwill
Mondo Publishing, 2003
Peace
Peace is something different to each of us. You might think of it as a bell that you can ring so all the world will hear it, or a special gift to open with care. Or peace could be a candle that we light at night to keep the darkness away. Peace is all of these things and much more - a hand waved in friendship, a kind deed done without asking anything in return. After all, what matters most is ...
