Great Rev War book for kids
Beautifully illustrated book on Revolutionary War that helps explain the war by comparing George Washington and King George III. Accurate information, clearly expressed in readable prose with a good story line. Humorous and very colorful artwork is very appealing. My grandsons, ages 8 and 10, loved it, and so did I. Highly recommend this book, especially if your children are turned off by ...

PRESIDENTS R US
If ever a book was designed for opening the eyes of Jr. High students, as well as adults looking for a bit of a "refresher course," this is it. It presents our presidents in a quick, concise manner, that makes one want to delve further into their lives and times. Without being ponderous, and/or preachy, it is informative, while also being one heck of a pageturner. Get it. Read it. Share it. ...

Growing up as a Maasai warrior
I really liked this book. It is one of several that I purchased after coming back from Tanzania, and I have recommended it to others. The author is straight-forward about his situation, so I wouldn't recommend it to children under, say, 12, but it is quite moving as an adult book, though he wrote it for young people.

Amazing Animal book!
I am a substitute teacher and I have spent the last 4 weeks in a first grade classroom. From the minute I brought the book into the classroom it has been the favorite of all the students especially the boys. They can't read all of it but they love looking up the animals and are excited to show me their favorite animals. It is a great book to expose kids of all ages to animals. The lizards, snakes ...

Real history for smart kids (grownups, too)
We've all heard songs and stories of John Henry, the "steel-driving man". But is there a real man behind them? And what is his story? Scott Nelson has written a fascinating book which not only digs deep into the John Henry story, but also shows how historians approach the past through a variety of sources, including dusty archives, obscure books, and even buried skeletons. With a light hand, ...

As informative as it is entertaining...
George Washington, Spymaster: How the Americans Outspied the British and Won the Revolutionary War is a National Geographic book written by Thomas B. Allen. This young adult book is as informative as it is entertaining. In the books that I have read about the Revolution, the Patriot spy network isn't given much coverage. Allen starts during the French and Indian War when Washington was a ...

Nice Little Book
If a third-grader were to ask you how many planets there are in our solar system, how would you answer? Back before August of 2006, it would be pretty simple -- nine: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. Ceres, which is found between Mars and Jupiter, was once considered a planet, but in 1850 was reclassified as an asteroid. Growing up in the 1970s and ...

Great book
This is a great book for elementary and middle school wanting to learn about the revolution. The comic book format makes many of the more complex concepts easy to grasp, and the "Britain vs. America" paradigm teaches that history really depends on the point of view of the person teaching it. For example, the American Colonists are called "rebels" in the book. And so they were, but that ...

A Great American Tale
The adventure and thrill of the Lewis & Clark Expedition is brought to life here in a story that both children and adults could appreciate. In beautiful and carefully rendered folk-style illustrations, and with descriptive text from the actual journals of the participants, the book has the appearance of something that almost could have been written in the early 1800's, when the expedition ...

a book I never want to forget!
We check out many library books each week and I try to get onto Amazon and review them so that I have a record of my impressions of each. I want to make note of those I didn't like; and then there are some, like this stunning volume, I want to make sure I don't forget exist! I can see us checking this book out over and over as my child (now almost 4) gets older and continues with homeschooling. ...
