Ya either luv it or hate it
At UC Berkeley, when I first started, several teachers recommended this book to me. I perused it and used it for the next 16 years - when the program was closed. The large number of exercises, the charts that really show how the verbs function (for visual learners), and the oral exercises (for aural learners and reinforcement) were invaluable. Even now, I sometimes refer to it for answers and ...

I love "Side by Side"
I was from China and started my life in the USA as a graduate student in Engineering. Although I took the TOEFL before I came to USA, my English is not good enough to express myself clearly and accurately. I decided to improve my English about 4 months ago and started to borrow some ESL books from local libraries. About 2 weeks ago, I found four "Side by Side" books (Book 1 to Book 4) from a ...

Great Word by Word Picture Dictionary!
I teach an ESL class to immigrants and use this book constantly. My students like this book becuz of the pictures, conversation ideas at the bottom and translations in several languages. I've had to order books (in Spanish, Chinese, Korean) for my students who want their own copies. We love this book!

Satisfied Teacher
I teach ESL, and used Focus on Grammar 4 and 5 for the first time this year. I am very pleased with the organization and content of the Focus series. The articles and stories are interesting; and they are educating in themselves. The grammar is carefully explained with clear examples. The exercises are thoughtfully planned, helping learners to notice the grammar and use it, and each exercise ...

Where Did We Come From? Where Are We Going?
Because Arthur C. Clarke recently died I decided to reread his classic novel, 2001: A Space Odyssey. Some people say that the major knock against science fiction is that it's necessarily dated soon after written because of the progress of society and technology. While this may be true of many stories, 2001 is timeless. It's hopeful, it's beautiful and it's filled with themes that speak to ...

John Grisham
Pearson ESL, 2000
Beware of Offers You Cannot Refuse
The Firm launched John Grisham to superstar status as the world's favorite debunker of the legal profession. The Firm perfectly casts the way that high-potential law students are wined, dined, and bribed into taking sweat shop jobs that ruin their lives. But like all good novels, that's just the beginning of the story. How does a small-to-medium-sized Memphis firm outbid the Wall Street boys? ...

Great for preparing for college-level listening
I am currently student-teaching in an ESL class that prepares non-native English speakers for entrance into US universities and we use this book. The course title is "College Listening Skills". I love this book. It focuses on preparing the student to enter into a university and be prepared to hear and understand college lectures. The book concentrates on good note-taking skills and teaches a ...

Great learning tool
I am about to start a TOEFL program to become a teacher and needed something to brush up on my English grammer. I bought this book for myself as a refresher and to give myself a head start on what I will be learning. Thus far it has been great. I believe it will be a wonderful tool to help you teach your class as it breaks down the many different modes of teaching. I have not finished the ...

Very helpful
I was pleasantly surprised to find out that this course is quite comprehensive actually - there are sections on vowels, stress and rhythm, consonants...I highly recommend it if you study on your own - you got everything you need here. Especially useful if you're confused with minimal pairs - sheep or ship, bad or bed and stuff like that. You'll get lots of practice and tips with these.

Easy-to-read introduction
This is an excellent introduction to American culture, and easy enough to read to be used with foreign students. The follow-up and supplementary exercises and suggestions at the end of each chapter are particularly helpful. I only wish I had enough time to use more of them.

Essential Idioms in English
It has been rated with 5 stars for the following reasons: It is very easy to get familiarized with the idioms. The step-by-step approach is very convenient and it facilitates the learning process. With respect to the previous edition more friendly and pleasant to read. A very well edited book.Although the content remains substantially the same, we find outstanding improvements.
