You Are Here: Personal Geographies and Other Maps of the Imagination12 reviews

Princeton Architectural Press, 2003

An incredible book
I've been buying books for 45 years and this is the most wonderful book I own--amazing, thought-provoking, beautiful. My only regret is that I waited so long to purchase it. As improbable as it sounds, "You Are Here" comes across as what might be the lush, lovely, and totally unlikely synthesis of Bachelard's "The Poetics of Space," the imaginative joy of A.A. Milne ("Winnie the Pooh" and "The ...

Visions of Heaven: The Dome in European Architecture7 reviews
Victoria Hammond

Princeton Architectural Press, 2005

Looking Up
'Visions of Heaven: The Dome in European Architecture' is one of those apparent coffee table books made to grace the room of art lovers and to initiate conversations about travel and architecture and art among guests. But this splendid book is far more than that (though a magnificent 'coffee table book' it most assuredly is!). Photographer David Stephenson has traveled throughout Europe from ...

New York Changing: Revisiting Berenice Abbott's New York8 reviews
Douglas Levere, Bonnie Yochelson

Princeton Architectural Press, 2004

A Before and After Look at New York
In the middle of the depression Berenice Abbott began a five year, WPA funded project to document in photographs New York's transformation from the 19th century to the modern metropolis of skyscrapers. The result was published as 'Changing New York.' Sixty years later Douglas Levere went back to the same sites of 100 of Abbotts photographs and took another picture with the same angle, the ...

Taking Things Seriously: 75 Objects with Unexpected Significance8 reviews
Joshua Glenn, Carol Hayes

Princeton Architectural Press, 2007

Objects of Interest to eveyone
This book is a real original. It's great to pick up and enjoy, then pick it up again later and enjoy some more. It encompasses something everyone does and hardly anyone really thinks about...hoarding/collecting stuff that is really important only to you. It puts a perspective on people's emotional ties to sometimes useless things. I had a lot fun reading it and sharing it. Pat D.

Around the World: The Grand Tour in Photo Albums7 reviews
Barbara Levine, Kirsten Jensen

Princeton Architectural Press, 2007

armchair time travel
Lose youself in this book and be transported to a time when the world was large and travel was an adventure. The slightly voyeristic feel of viewing strangers' photo albums enhances the strong sense of time and place. Its the perfect book for a long winter afternoon (and a pot of darjeeling tea.) I'll be sending this to several people on my xmas list.

Tibor Kalman, Perverse Optimist17 reviews

Princeton Architectural Press, 2000

If a man smiles at you...
I first heard of Tibor Kalman while browsing a copy of "Interview", just to learn that it was a tribute. Sometime later, I found a smiling bookcover looking at me. I bought it. I was waiting for the bus and started to read it... I could not put it down again. I read textes, subtitles, infos, even the small characters of the work reproduced. It was not enough. It made me regain the somehow lost ...

SPECK: A Curious Collection of Uncommon Things8 reviews
Peter Buchanan-Smith

Princeton Architectural Press, 2001

Went back to buy it
I saw this book in the store and then left it behind in a mad fit at register lines that were too long. Two days later, I was back in the store--couldn't let it go. I love this book. It fits somehow with Drawing from Life: The Journal as Art, and I wonder if the two books have the same editor? It's a collection of views into other people's minds, affirmation of things I've thought to do ...

The Book as Art: Artists' Books from the National Museum of Women in the Arts9 reviews
Krystyna Wasserman, Johanna Drucker, ...

Princeton Architectural Press, 2006

One of the best on creating books and journals
One of the best! This book should be on your bookshelf if you are interested in the books as an art form. I would suggest it for any school or college media center. I would not include it on a list for coffee table books but if you have a serious home library which leans toward the book arts, artist journals and sketchbooks; by all means, put this out on the reading table. The next best ...

New York's Forgotten Substations: The Power Behind the Subway7 reviews
Christopher Payne

Princeton Architectural Press, 2002

A large audience will find a fascinating account
New York's Forgotten Substations: The Power Behind The Subway is hard to easily categorize this title, but any with an interest in New York history and culture will find this a fascinating topic - and worthy of a visit. The author was introduced to the substations by an official of the NYC Transit Author's Power Department; he photographed and wrote the history of these buildings, and his photos ...

The Day-to-Day Life of Albert Hastings5 reviews
KayLynn Deveney, Albert Hastings

Princeton Architectural Press, 2007

Masterful work
Don't know where to start: great concept, total package optimized for peaceful enjoyment. Loved the feel, fonts, script, cover, size and color of the book. Now to the important part (from a photographer's angle :)) Ms. Deveney's artful photographic view is extremely engaging and subtle. The reader/observer is drawn into scenes where one is allowed a personal privilege to study an ordinary ...

Lewis.Tsurumaki.Lewis: Opportunistic Architecture5 reviews
Paul Lewis, Marc Tsurumaki, ...

Princeton Architectural Press, 2007

LTL - monograph you need if you like their work!
Lewis Tsurumaki Lewis continue to go from strength to strength as they progress from unbuilt theory and competition entries to built work. I envied them in school, and I appreciate them now I'm working as an Architect. This monograph is a perfect follow up to the Pamphlet Architecture "Situation Normal". Some of the work is re-presented here but 90% of it is fresh and new. If you ever wanted to ...

It Is Beautiful -- Then Gone5 reviews
Martin Venezky

Princeton Architectural Press, 2007

Provides his commercial design work plus new graphics created just for this book: some 700 images in all
Martin Venezky's It Is Beautiful Then Gone (1568984561, $40.00) provides an unusual artistic approach: Venezky hones 'Slow Design', using raw materials and old design tools of collage and cut-and-paste to create an artwork which will intentionally age and decay over time. By this process, Martin Venezky maintains, the art evolves and changes and the artist develops a closer connection with the ...

Operating Manual for Spaceship Earth5 reviews
R. Buckminster Fuller

Princeton Architectural Press, 2000

Control, Operate and Plan Your Spaceship
R. Buckminster Fuller's (Bucky hereout), designer of the geodesic dome (one can see at EPCOT), lays down the thought patterns of a successful world in this short and concise book based on his discoveries (probably more appropriate than inventions, as he said "I am not tryingto imitate nature, I'm trying to find the principles she uses"). It is in this book that Bucky gives the reader insight ...

Frank Lloyd Wright's Martin House: Architecture as Portraiture6 reviews
Jack Quinan

Princeton Architectural Press, 2004

Simply the Finest Recent Book on Wright
As an Owner of FLW's Davenport House, Architect, and Wright Researcher, I found this to be the finest recent book on Wright. The insights into the development of the design, client relationship, Wright,s letters, the extraordinary quality of the photographs, the quality of the writing and the exquisite physical quality of the book make this an exceptional book. This book is a sheer pleasure to ...

Butabu: Adobe Architecture of West Africa4 reviews
Suzanne Preston Blier

Princeton Architectural Press, 2003

Butabu: Adobe Architecture of West Africa
The soft folds and highly textured surfaces of Mali mosques, Niger chiefs' houses and other examples of the African adobe vernacular have lured a succession of hippies with a wobbly sense of focus. So it's a delight to see a photographer who has chronicled the sharp-edged structures of Norman Foster and Richard Rogers bring clarity to such a picturesque subject, and to read such an illuminating ...

Designed by Peter Saville5 reviews
Peter Saville

Princeton Architectural Press, 2003

As close to visual perfection you can get
I only wanted to write a review because this book looked lonely without a single customer review. You need this book if you want to understand where our design-obsessive culture originated. Even if you don't give a rat's ass, if you take any kind of enjoyment from visual and conceptual aesthetics, you still need this. It is great to flip through, the ultimate coffee table book. But ...

Mingering Mike6 reviews
Dori Hadar

Princeton Architectural Press, 2007

Wow!
What an amazing book! Mingering Mike is a true superstar and Mr. Hadar has done a great job chronicling his (imaginary) career. Can't wait to hear the songs!

D.I.Y.: Kids4 reviews
Ellen Lupton, Julia Lupton

Princeton Architectural Press, 2007

Artist view
I think that writing this book with my mom was really interesting. Everyone will enjoy doing crafts with their family. There so many ideas in this book. My favorite projects were making stuffed animals and mod-podge purses. The stuffies are cute and cuddly and there's room for one in everybody's heart. The purses are very stylish and unique. This book is wonderful and you should definitely buy it.

Materials for Design5 reviews
Victoria Ballard Bell, Patrick Rand

Princeton Architectural Press, 2006

Design magicians reveal their material tricks
If you've seen beautiful design and wanted to know how it was actually made, this is the book to show you. The case studies are the best of recent work and each has clear concepts, many color shots and ALSO clear construction drawings and details which are impossible to find. Some books only tease with images but not explanations, and technical manuals miss the beauty of design altogether. This ...
