The Standard for Portfolio Management

PMI Standard for Portfolio Management
The Standard gives a good an concise guidance on how to handle Portfolio management. It's very practical to apply. It did not provide real new insights, though. Klaas Buist

Very High Level
Complex and very high level. Doesn't give practical examples to program managemment. The concepts are easily understood but the implementation detail is very limited. I'll be looking for a book that complements this standard with practical examples and advise in applying the concepts of the standard.

One of the top books on project estimating I've read
At 136 pages this book covers a wide array of important topics and techniques in depth. The main value of the approach the author provides is that it's both effective and consistent with best practices in project estimating. In particular, the deliverables-based work breakdown structure approach that forms the foundation of the estimating process is one that I've been using for over a decade, and ...

Decisions ... decisions ...
Of the three books that focus solely on work breakdown structures this is the most complete. The other two are "Nuts and Bolts Series 1--How to Build a Work Breakdown Structure" by Carl L. Pritchard, and "Project Management Institute Practice Standard for Work Breakdown Structures". The burning question is how do they compare and which is best. For a no-nonsense and pragmatic book the "Nuts and ...

PMBOK Review PMBOK to me is worth more than what its weight in uranium or plutonium can destroy through nuclear fission and/or fusion. PMBOK appears to have been developed through valuable contribution of practicing project managers and its usefulness is beyond my challenge. I recommend PMI to send a complimentary copy of PMBOK to the trustees of Norway's Svalbard Global Seed Doomsday ...

Excellent resource to reinforce PMI Knowledgebase
This book provides some excellent Project Management questions with detailed explanation of the right AND wrong answers following PMBOK book. This material will help reinforce the right PMI methodology and best practices. This book is a valuable tool for preparing for the PMP exam. While the actual questions are atypical of the actual PMP Certification Exam, this book provides a great ...

Project Management Institute, 2000
Good for the PMP exam until September 2005
There is not much to say about the PMBOK's content. It was the de facto standard for project management from 2000 to 2004. The content is simply excellent. If you intend to take the PMP exam before September 2005, you simply must buy it. If you intend to take the test after that date, though, you should buy the 2004 version. This is book not for amateurs. If you have no experience ...

Required reading for the PMP? NOT! A must buy though ...
This book used to be on PMI's recommended reading list for PMP preparation (I am not sure if it still is). The book does not use any complicated terminology and is written using an easy to read writing style. But the concepts will be easier to understand when you become an experienced project manager. If you read it at the beginning of your career, I recommend that you keep this in mind and not ...

Best short intro to handling one or more projects.
The tools you need for one or more projects are there. This is one of the handful of PM books that I have read more than once and one of the very few that get loaned out on a regular basis. It is not a comprehensive book, but if you are inexperienced and need to ramp up quick, this book gives you the basics. Even experts will find the templates useful. It's a short book so it is long ...

For Educated & Experienced Readers
Comprehensive and well-written treatment of a difficult subject. The book is aimed at project managers but readers who have college-level math and/or project experience in business can learn from this book. As a project manager, I learned where my skills were weak and needed strengthening, amoung other things. More importantly, I picked up techniques and methods to use on the job. One ...

Vijay K. Verma

Good overview but too theoretical
In this second volume, the author covers almost all soft issues: how to organize great meetings, active listening, conflict management tactics, motivation theories (such as Maslow's, Erg's, Herzberg's and Mc Clelland's), guidelines for successful negotiations and team development stages. It is a good summary but is a bit short of practical examples or case studies to make this knowledge ...

Well written introduction to probability and risk management
My mentor and colleague is fond of chiding me to "roll the dice". However, he is well versed in probability and risk management, so what he is really attempting to get me to do is to take *calculated* risks. I hate math, but knew that I had to overcome that if I wanted to take the next step in my ongoing professional development. I selected this book because it was short, and well written and ...
