Community Organizing and Community Building for Health
2 reviews
Rutgers University Press, 2004
It's a tome, but a must-read tome.
We read this book for a grad school class, and it was the best book I read as a grad student. Each chapter is organized into two parts, a theoretical treatment followed by an in-depth case study. Although it's a bit heady, the book is also extremely practical. The field of community building/organizing is obviously practice-oriented, but some solid theory has been needed for at least a ...
Quicksand and Passing (American Women Writers Series)

Only read Quicksand--wonderful book
I read this book years ago, in college. It made me much more sympathetic to the struggles of biracial (black and white) women, of the past and today -- I am an Asian-American female. The book is a beautifully written, but painful story of how the protagonist moves through her life in societies where she is kept down on many levels (socially, economically, psychologically, physically) -- ...

An important work
Just as newspapers have shifted their primary emphasis from print to the Internet, so too has politics. The bottom-up dynamic, emblemized by user-generated content, is taking over in many spheres, and those who cling to old authoritarian top-down structures will become irrelevant. There's more power in a user-generated video on youtube, produced at almost zero cost and gone viral, than in any ...

New Insights into How Race Gets Constructed by Schools
Race in the Schoolyard adds a new dimension to the literature on race and schooling. It examines how race is understood, produced, reproduced and contested by students, teachers and parents. It provides rich description and profound analysis of the dynamics of race in elementary schools. Its explanations of how race is constructed and dealt with at schools incorporates the examination of micro ...
Straight Edge: Clean-Living Youth, Hardcore Punk, And Social Change

Ross Haenfler

A great look at the Straight Edge scene!
Ross really did a wonderful job with this book. He analyzed the Straight Edge subculture from both a sociological point of view, as well as from a fan perspective. Ross has been part of the Straight Edge scene since the late 80's, and has witnessed a lot during this time. This gave him the ability to truly analyze the scene. The book reads great, and I recommend it to anyone that is ...

Lydia Maria Francis Child
Rutgers University Press, 1986
Intresting at its best
Although for a modern reader this book might not seem very interesting it did raise provocative questions for 19th c. readers. Child discusses religious issues and of course the position of the Native Americans in regards to the puritans. However, the ending is very concervative and not realistic.

The Intruders: Unreasonable Searches and Seizures from King John to John Ashcroft
Samuel Dash
Rutgers University Press, 2004
As chief counsel of the U.S. Senate Watergate Committee, Sam Dash challenged the Nixon administration's abuse of presidential power in the 1970s. Now he turns his discerning legal mind to the Bush administration's increasing intrusion on the privacy rights of American citizens. What is the best way to balance the competing interests of national security and individual liberty in our post-9/11 world? To answer that question, Dash examines ...

500 Years of Chicana Women's History/ Anos de Historia de las Chicanans
Elizabeth "Betita" Martinez
Rutgers University Press, 2007
The history of Mexican Americans spans more than five centuries and varies from region to region across the United States. Yet most of our history books devote at most a chapter to Chicano history, with even less attention to the story of Chicanas. 500 Years of Chicana Women's History offers a powerful antidote to this omission with a vivid, pictorial account of struggle and survival, resilience and achievement, discrimination and ...

Tillie Olsen
Rutgers University Press, 1995
She has a magic with words..
Olsen writes stories that are so powerful, and so well-written, you'll want to read them again and again. Although she uses Jewish culture as a backdrop, her talents bring a universaility to her stories which reminds me of Steinbeck in its power, and Morrison in its complexity.
Frauen: German Women Recall the Third Reich

Alison Owings
Rutgers University Press, 1995
One of the best books I've ever read
This book is incredible, one I'll re-read several times through the years. I've been living in Germany for the past three years, and will soon return to America. The people here, while VERY friendly, are quite reserved, so it's amazing that Alison Owings was able to get so many women from that era to open up about this sensitive subject. Not only do I applaud Ms. Owings's effort, but I thank ...

Rene Grousset
Rutgers University Press, 1988
The Wrath of Khans
A work of historical research is certainly a well-respected classic when it is used as a primary reference in just about every subsequent book on the subject. Rene Grousset's history is truly monumental, covering the vast steppe region from Korea to Hungary, and over the course of around 1500 years, and incorporates several different realms of knowledge that each would require a lifetime of work ...
Gender Play: Girls and Boys in School

Barrie Thorne
Rutgers University Press, 1993
As vital as ever!
Thorne shows us how children learn & utilize gender through how and what they play in the school setting. I was delighted to see that children today still engage in the "cooties" game....that's something that MY generation played in the late 60's! I felt Thorne was right on target with what she saw and how she perceived it! Every educator, parent or anybody interested in how children perceive ...

A slim volume, this book is critical reading for anyone who wants to understand and improve health care for everyone--by making the system work better for those who currently have access and helping to craft workable solutions to the millions left out. David Mechanic has been writing about health care for decades. Mechanic's incisive analysis gets at the fundamental conflicts of values and cash ...

Comprehensive overview...
This book is the factual equivalent of Victor Malarek's, "The Natashas." In a forty page paper I am writing on trafficking, DeStefano's book is referenced more than any other (non-govermental)source. Balanced, comprehensive, and amazingly unbiased.
