Zoo Station
I am a World War II genre fan. This is one of the best novels I have ever read in this historical fiction class. The plot is interesting and very plausible, the characters very attractive, the descriptions of wartime Europe riveting, the writing outstanding.

The Manhattan Family Guide to Private Schools and Selective Public Schools, 5th Ed. (Manhattan Family Guide ...6 reviews
Victoria Goldman

Soho Press, 2005

This Book is the Bible for New York Parents
This is an amazing resource. Although, guide books for college and graduate schools have been around for some time, before Victoria Goldman there were no usable private school guides. This book has helped to place my children and many more in the school most appropriate for each of them. I would highly recommend anyone considering private schools in New York to buy this book. Goldman out does ...

The Darkest Child: A Novel114 reviews
Delores Phillips

Soho Press, 2005

The Darkest Child And The Smartest
A great piece of work involved in the writing of this book. It definitely should be a movie. A young mother who cannot take care of her responsibilities and put that responsibility on her children by any means necessary. A MUST READ!

Chosen By a Horse121 reviews

Soho Press Inc, 2007

Beautiful Simplicity
This book was an amazingly beautiful story about the love and courage a pet owner shares with their pet. I loved the simplicity of the story. It was very engaging. I laughed, I cried, and I found myself wishing I could own a horse. Animals are amazing. It's a story of love for animals, for yourself and others. Loved it.

Silesian Station6 reviews
David Downing

Soho Press, 2008

Pre-WWII tour de force
"Silesian Station" is a fast-paced account of the Third Reich's march toward all out war in the summer and fall of 1939. Author David Downing's protagonist, John Russell, is an Anglo-American journalist who winds up with a foot in every political camp as he tries to protect his German family from being swept up in the coming onslaught. The plot line in this book is driven forward with an ...

Blood Alone: A Billy Boyle World War II Mystery4 reviews
James R. Benn

Soho Press, 2008

The third Boyle WWII thriller is an exciting tale
In 1943 the Allied army invades Sicily. However, General Eisenhower's Special Investigator Billy Boyle carries a special message, but not from his boss who is a distant relative. The former Boston police detective brings a note from American Mafiosi Don Lucky Luciano to the Sicilian Mafia asking them to not fight the American soldiers. However Billy is wounded before he can deliver his ...

How Evan Broke His Head and Other Secrets12 reviews
Garth Stein

Soho Press, 2008

Wow. Unusual subject hits hard.
Epilepsy has rarely been examined in fiction. In How Even Broke his Head and Other Stories, Garth Stein puts an end to the silence. With cool and measured precision, he introduces us to Evan Wallace, epileptic, and then forces us to watch Evan's ever-so-slow drift toward the inevitable seizure. Along the way, somehow, we find ourselves hoping Evan's efforts to ward it off, control his grip on ...

Moab Is My Washpot50 reviews
Stephen Fry

Soho Press, 2003

Like Wodehouse? You'll Like This.
Fry is a Wodehouse-worshipper, and his elegant prose shows it. This discursive, digressive, sometimes profane and endlessly entertaining bio covers Fry's youth (with much reminiscing about Public School days in the manner of Wodehouse's Psmith) and the development of his areligious (anti-religious?) and homosexual tendencies... well, they're more than tendencies, really, as you'll see. I ...

The Manhattan Directory of Private Nursery Schools, 6th Ed. (Manhattan Directory of Private Nursery Schools)9 reviews
Victoria Goldman

Soho Press, 2007

An Excellent Resource for Parents!
Victoria Goldman's Directory of Nursery Schools is essential reading for any New York City parent who is about to embark on the nursery school admissions process. An earlier reviewer criticized it for not critiquing the schools, but I think that is it's strength. It's a guidebook. It provides a description of each school and will help you narrow the choices of nursery schools to which you ...

The Farming of Bones59 reviews
Edwidge Danticat

Soho Press, 2003

"The Farming of Bones" is a chronological work of art.
Danticat moves beyond the stream of consciousness of "Krick Krack" and takes us on a voyage to the Dominican Republic and opens our hearts to the drama of a terrifyingly real era of hatred personified. Moving away from the quiet life of a plantation type existence. The novel lands us in a holocaust situation where the host country becomes murderous and ravenous. The exciting adventure builds ...

Making History61 reviews
Stephen Fry

Soho Press, 2003

Non-Fiction Person Loved This Novel!
I don't ususally read non-fiction, and have never been into the Alternate History craze. I bought this as a Stephen Fry fan, and perhaps a bit because I was a history major in college. From page one, I could not put it down. The way Fry writes, discussing how one feels when getting up in the morning, writing a thesis, and comparing us history students to pretentious literature students for ...

The Night Birds3 reviews
Thomas Maltman

Soho Press, 2008

What a Great Title!
This is a well researched, and excellently written work that blends historical realities with the traditions of Ozark healers and native tribes of Minnesota. "The Night Birds" is full of passion and surprise, and the image evoked by the title gathers more meaning as the story progresses. The narrative follows several generations of European immigrants as they struggle to survive side by side ...

Windward Heights4 reviews
Maryse Conde

Soho Press, 2003

A Caribbean setting enriches the Wuthering Heights story
The passionate tragedy created by different social classes in WUTHERING HEIGHTS is hard to comprehend in contemporary USA. In WINDWARD HEIGHTS Conde renews the emotional reaction by changing classes to skin color in a 19th century Caribbean setting. Conde following the Bronte storyline closely which means a plethora of characters with confusing relationships, the only weakness in the novel. ...

The Liar43 reviews
Stephen Fry

Soho Press, 2003

The funniest book I have read in years
I am a johnny-come-lately to this book which has been out for some time. But to call this witty, is like calling the ocean damp. There are lines in here that are astoundingly funny. I cannot remember the last time that I laughed out loud while reading a book, and I did many times reading the Liar. The main character, Adrian, has lines that are worthy of any Oscar Wilde character. These are lines ...

Word Stems: A Dictionary4 reviews
John Kennedy

Soho Press, 2003

An Insightful Tour of the English
Linguists call roots "segmental morphemes", but we know them as prefixes, suffixes, and elements. Kennedy's book provides a good reference regarding the roots of the 8,000 or so "standard vocabulary". The secret in making these kinds of reference books work is to provide cross references that encourage the reader to explore and discover gems that they weren't looking for (something akin to ...

The First Wave: A Billy Boyle World War II Mystery (Billy Boyle)6 reviews
James R. Benn

Soho Press, 2008

Billy Boils Again
No "sophomore slump" here - James R. Benn's second Billy Boyle WWII mystery is even better than his first. The characters are interesting, the plot intriguing, and the well-researched historical details lend a feeling of authenticity.

Light Fell8 reviews
Evan Fallenberg

Soho Press, 2008

Weaves the secular and profane
It's amazing to me that the author is a straight man, though I note he has acknowledged authorities on Jewish gay issues. The prose is mellifluous, picking you up and carrying you along so that the writing alone is a joy; the plot only adds to it. If you are gay and Jewish, particularly if you grow up in a household with any degree of religious observance, this book will mesmerize you on many ...

Chosen Forever: a memoir8 reviews
Susan Richards

Soho Press, 2008

A wonderful read
having so enjoyed Chosen By A Horse, Chosen Forever was even a braver and stronger memoir. I didn't want to put it down.

The Coroner's Lunch39 reviews
Colin Cotterill

Soho Press, 2004

CSI Vientiane, Season 1: The Sixth Sense
First of all, thanks to V.J.Canberra for recommending this historical/esoteric/ethnic series of crime novels around Dr.Siri. Meet the hero: the man is 72 and reluctantly (he would rather retire) national chief coroner of the recently turned Republic of Laos under communist Pathet Lao rule. The time is 1976. Dr.Siri is insufficiently qualified as well as equipped and staffed. He makes that up by ...

Murder in the Sentier14 reviews
Cara Black

Soho Press, 2008

I didn't want it to end...
and that's the truth. This is the best Cara Black mystery I have read yet. The plot and the details of Paris were so interesting I hated to have to put the book down to do something else (like eat or sleep). I'll add some personal reasons why this book appealed to me, since there are a lot of rave reviews already. First, I have spent time in many parts of Paris, but never the Sentier. I had just ...
