Wow
I read this book many years ago and still have the book. This is a thought-provoking book, and I can honestly say that it's one of the best books that I have ever read in my whole life. There is much to be thought about in this book, and I intend to reread this book so I can appreciate it all over again. Truly, this book is one of these classics that must be preserved always, for the wonderful ...

Great copy of unabridged Count of Monte Cristo
We only recently found out that all our copies of The Count of Monte Cristo were abridged. We checked this out of our local library and liked it so much we bought a copy for our home library. The type setting is very readable and best of all, it's not abridged. The story is a classic and a great read. I recommend it for everyone.

three men in a boat from the oxford bookworms library
I read this book about 10 years ago......and today I'm still laughing. Jerome possessed very good comic timing, the story flowed naturally, the emotions and reaction of the 3 men were so real that I wish I was on the river and met them at that time! Somehow this book can teach us the importance of taking a break from our daily life. I recently bought a copy from Amazon which was initialy ...

At 79 y/o and remember this book vividly from childhood.
A wonderful collection of tales for children, however, the edition available from amazon does not have the wonderful illustrations which did so much to enhance the stories. Try to get the old version.

Jane Austen

Jane Austen's life if fate were kind.
Persuasion is Jane Austen's last completed work before her death. It differs from her other more well known works such as Pride & Prejudice, and Emma. It focuses on a relationship who have a second chance to re-ignite true love but whether or not they will depends on so many things that make a good story and are still applicable today. A crazy family, social expectations, unforgiveness, ...

The Horrors of War engage the Innocence of Life
What can one truly say about an American Classic. It would be presumptuous on my part, at the very least, to analyze Mr. Crane's masterpiece after so many literary giants have already poked and prodded this novel of youth and war to ad nauseam. As a young boy in the early 1950s, I first read this novel and enjoyed the superficial battle narratives. Later as a college student in the 1960s, I ...

A great book for boys.
This is a book I first read in the ninth grade but is easily read by any good reader 5th grade up. An Adventure about a young boy taken from his family at a young age who learns to do what is right , to stand up against bullies , to organise others in a right cause. We follow him to young manhood and the righting of a terrible injustice. Boys will love it. Makes you want to make a shield and ...
The Turn of the Screw (Tor Classics)

Henry James
Tor Classics, 1993
An OK novella
The Turn of the Screw is an alright novel if you like that sort of reading, it requires in depth dissection of everything said, and you get no real answers in the end, which is what I really didn't like, though I have theories of my own. After the initial read I was very disappointed, I had been told that it was a great novel; however, after discussing the book in my American novels class, many ...

Will Always Be A Classic
I honestly didn't think that I would enjoy this book as much as I did. :] It is a love and hate story. I wasn't fond of Catherine or Heathcliff, but i enjoyed the book. It took me a little while to really get into but after that i couldn't put it down! :] But if your looking for a happy story with a good fairytale ending this book is not for you. For me I really did like this book but I don't ...

Lord, grant that I may seek rather to comfort than to be comforted ...
What is it about Oliver Twist that keeps people coming back to it so often and for so long? Oliver Twist is actually one of my favourite all-time reads. I try to read it once every few years, and every time I decide to re-read it, I go in search of a copy that I don't already own because it's fascinating the different publishers, typefaces, bindings etc, that this book has gone through. Maybe I'm ...

Book 2 Stormlands
The sequel to "The Islander" Book One of the Stormlands, was an absolute treasure of fantasy, adventure and a splash of romance mixed together in a wonderful blend of story-telling.John Maddox Roberts did a wonderful job of mixing in the real life learned strengths of Hael (hero) and a touch of a higher power type Colorful, adventureous and a pick up and don't put down kind of book.

Jack London
Tor Classics, 1999
Brilliantly Written
I read many of London's abridged novels when I was very young, but I never really appreciated his writing to the fullest extent until I read this collection of stories. These stories are not simple, shallow writings. They each have a message of their own, they take digesting. In each story the author reflects upon human nature and strikes a chord that rings true in all of us. After the end of ...

No One Can Write a More Thrilling Story than Dumas
Having just spent the last few months reading all five books in the Three Musketeer series, the following are my suggestions. 1. Read all five books in order. The Man in the Iron Mask is probably enjoyable on its own but reading the four books that proceed it help place the story in its proper context. Think of the Man in the Iron Mask as the dessert in a five course meal. Dessert is great ...

Building a classic library for a granddaughter
They don't seem to require reading classic literature in the schools any more, so I decided to build a library for my 12-year old granddaughter. She has read them all, including this one, so it wasn't a bad idea. Now, if I could just get her to call her old grandfather more often....

Black Arrow Hits the Mark
This story is fantastic. The author's grasp of the language and speech of the period is wonderful and completely creates an atmosphere that one cannot help but fall into. This is now one of my favorite books!

Good Version for Kids
This book is a good version to read to kids. The language is basic enough for kids to follow the plot. I plan on using it as a lesson on legends around Halloween time for my fourth grade students.

A Very Funny Dickens Novel
This is a very funny novel in some sections. Imagine an older Oliver Twist, about 19 or 20 or so, but handsome, and with a temper, and with a strong outgoing personality, and one who can act and do all kinds of things. He has lots of self confidence and a beautiful sister, and throw in an obnoxious and rich uncle and a dotty mother. Yes, it is very, very entertaining. I bought the Wordsworth ...

Oscar Wilde
Tor Classics, 1999
The books that the world calls immoral are books that show the world its own shame
Wilde sees the world more clearly than any writer of fiction in the last century. It is for that reason that his work is so filled with countless paradoxes and contradictions that challenge the mind and titillate the senses. Wilde lived in an infinitely ironic age, when society had grown so influential as to crowd out the individuals that made it up. Today, we have taken for granted this ...
