The Life of Elizabeth Blackwell by Elizabeth Schleichert (Illustrated by Antonio Castro)(Hardcover)
Description from the book back cover: America's first female physician, Elizabeth Blackwell brought to her profession a revolutionary view of medical practice and education. Her career is a series of notable "first": she opened the first hospital staffed by women physicians and the first woman's medical college. Equally important, Blackwell redefined the scope of health care and worked to ...

A good foundation report for grades 4 and up on Chinese ruler Mao Zedong
A little over a hundred pages of detail make for a good foundation report for grades 4 and up on Chinese ruler Mao Zedong, one of the most powerful people in the world during his lifetime. Mao grew up in a world ruled by the Qing dynasty, when many longed for change: he came to power in 1949 and China became a Communist nation under his control, which extended throughout Chinese daily life. This ...

Kazakstan review
Our family is adopting a baby from kazakstan, and this book was purchased for my 9 year old son, and for our family to learn about the country. It's a great book, we learned a lot, and my 9 year old really loved it and brought it to school and shared with his friends. We had never even heard of Kazakstan, now I feel we are becoming experts. :) This will be a great book to teach our child about ...

Jill Norgren

another wonderful book by this author
I read Norgren's previous book on Belva Lockwood, one of the greatest early champions of the rights of women, and even reviewed it favorably on Amazon, something I don't normally do, so I was intrigued when I found out that she had written a life of Lockwood for children. I thought this might make a good gift for some children I know, since Norgren's regular biography was so engrossing and ...

Campaign Chicanery
This entertaining history of Presidential campaigns tells the stories behind the stories, in the quadriennial race for the White House. From George Washington to George Bush, this highly readable book is packed with little-known facts, with slogans and slurs, and promises kept - and forgotten. A winner!

Good Biographical Book On Harry Potter's Author
If you're wondering how J.K. Rowling came up with the idea for the Harry Potter books, and how she *envisioned* the characters, this is the book to read! It's written in very understandable, plain, and simple language that your kids will love to read too! If they're "Potter-Aficionados" ~ they should have this book! (It may even inspire them to 'aspire' to write their own stories someday)!

Photosynthesis
Very readable introduction to photosynthesis. Includes some great facts like a single maple tree can produce 2 tons of food (sugar) in one sunny day. Could use some illustrations (e.g. cell anatomy and xylem and phloem, but photos are good. Includes a glossary, additional resource list, and index. Extremely Clear and Simple Writing of a Complex Subject
The surprising thing to me about this book is that only a very few years ago the material here was the subject of only the deepest thinkers in physics and cosmology. This is material that is more advanced than what I was taught in college. Now this material is produced in a form suitable for a young audience. The wording, the explanations, the selection of what to present in this small book ...

Robert Mugabe's Zimbabwe
This is a short primer book for the uninitiated who want to know Zimbabwe and Robert Mugabe. It is also a good reference guide with dates, names and places of importance to the student of the Zimbabwean freedom fighter turned president. It does not go into much detail but I think it is a valuable book for anyone interested in studying the subject. It is an easy read and does not assume that ...

History Comes Alive!
Okay, I hate to admit it, but I could never comprehend the need for American Unions - that is until I read the stunning new book by Gloria Skurzynski. Through Ms. Skurzynski's skillful, clear style I encountered the literal world of Sweat and Blood as I followed the lives of brave men and women who dared challenge the status quo. For me the read was transformative. Rare photographs, ...

Love it....
I purchased this book for my son. I left Romania over 18 years ago. I wanted my son and my husband to know where I came from, hence the purchase. The book does give a little history lesson. It's not overwhelming but it includes a lot of interesting, current information. The photos are great. I love it.

A Compelling Read
I couldn't put this book down. Landau, who writes for young adults, takes us on a fascinating journey, dispelling our sterotypes of suicide bombers and citing studies along the way. Some are depressed people who have no hope of a brighter tomorrow. I would read this again. Pat

Perfect for middle school girls
My 12 year old daughter is a fashion maven so she read this instead of a more typical bio for school. A great pick for kids who just don't want to read another book about Ben Franklin or Helen Keller.

Very interesting and thought provoking
In 1492 Columbus sailed the ocean blue...and that's when America was discovered, right? Well, you may be surprised to find out that that isn't even close to the truth! We know for a fact that the Vikings sailed across to North America some 500 years before Columbus made his voyage - Happy Leif Ericsson Day! But, there is good reason to believe that the Vikings themselves were ...
