Manila Bay.2 reviews
William Marshall

Unionsverlag, 2000

Hilarious
William Marshall is one of the finest writers of detective fiction of all time. One might call his books Postmodern in their narration. It's not easy to write a book that is really funny. Marshall succeeds brilliantly here. For more info, read the chapter on the two Manila Bay novels in my book The Post-Colonial Detective.

Solo Hand.3 reviews
Bill Moody

Unionsverlag, 2001

A Sizzling Intro to a Jazz-themed mystery series!!
After an accident has rendered his left hand--his solo hand--unfit for playing the jazz piano that's been his livelihood, Evan Horne is reluctantly recruited as a bag-man in an elaborate blackmail scheme involving his ex-wife and former employer and a host of colorful characters ranging from an ex-NFL-player-turned-bodyguard to a strangely-erudite country singer. But what at first seems a ...

Frankie Bosser kommt heim.1 review
Jerry Raine

Unionsverlag, 2000

German language version of Frankie Bosser Comes Home
This British criminal adventure reads in the same vain as that country's crime authors such as James Pattinson or Gerald Hammond but a little bit more graphic. While there's nothing about you'll remember in say ten years time it is a quick easy read that is a very enjoyable way to pas the time. Loser Phil Gator who fled England until the heat died down on a former robbery returns home to be ...

Gimme more.3 reviews
Liza Cody

Unionsverlag, 2004

Don't hesitate : kill the sharks !
A masterpiece, of sorts. It depicts the rock n' roll stage, the rockstar bachstage and the music shark wings marvellously, showing how these sharks use the naiveté and at times simplemindedness and inner hostility of these rock n' roll groups to provide them with golden crumbs when they keep for themselves the gold ingots though these are nothing but the proceeds of the rock n' roll bands' work. ...

Chourmo.5 reviews
Jean-Claude Izzo

Unionsverlag, 2000

Thrilling and melancholic crime story.
I read Chourmo in the german edition on a friend's recommendation and I swallowed it within 48 hrs. It's a witty, fast-paced and quite grim detective story - but first of all it's a love declaration to one of the most thrilling cities in Europe: Marseille. The story centers on ex-cop Fabio Montale, who's spent most of his service in the suburbs of Marseille, the dangerous boiling pots of the ...

Blue Lightning.1 review
Liza Cody, Jeffery Deaver, ...

Unionsverlag, 2000

Soulful, good reading
I received this book as a present & couldn't put it down -- soulful, fascinating stories, all loosely wrapped around music, ranging from jazz clubs to John Lennon & Johnny Cash meeting to an old man dropping dead while dancing ecstatically, claiming "I was the best dancer! I was the best dancer!" I love the bios in the back with each writer explaining their tastes in music & what they listen ...

Solea.3 reviews
Jean-Claude Izzo

Unionsverlag, 2001

Capital of the Third World
Either in this book or one of the other two in the trilogy, Izzo calls his beloved Marseilles the capital of the third world. It is a convincing monicker. In fact, the city itself is as important to his stories as any of the characters, who in turn convey the uniqueness of the place. I would unabashedly give Solea and the other two in the trilogy five stars, in appreciation for the lucid writing ...

Hammett2 reviews
Joe Gores

Unionsverlag, 2007

In the best tradition of Hammett and Chandler
A wonderfully suspenseful novel that would make the real Dashiell Hammett proud. Gores did his homework well and it shows. I'm pleased to find that someone is carrying the torch for Hammett, and Chandler too. I've read all of their novels and this one rates right up there with the best. I look forward to the movie being released on DVD.

Temutma.2 reviews
Rebecca Bradley, Stewart Sloan

Unionsverlag, 2000

Possibly the BEST vampire novel since Dracula.
"Temutma" is a little gem of a horror novel from Hong Kong that most readers would unfortunately never have heard of. It is quite possibly the BEST vampire novel I've ever read since Dracula (take that, Anne Rice) - and I say this not because of Temutma's literary merits, but because of its frenetic pacing and the atmosphere of sheer terror that it evokes. Set in Hong Kong in the early 1990s, ...

UT, Nr.45, Auch die Vögel sind fort1 review
Yasar Kemal

Unionsverlag, 1994

If I could only find it in English translation ...
I picked up this marvelous little book in Turkey (in German) and have read it three or four times. Not being a native German speaker, I may have missed important allusions when Turkish concepts could not be translated perfectly in easily readable German. Consequently, I have been hoping to find a good English translation, but like so many other fine Middle Eastern (and Eastern European) books ...

Nana Plaza (German Language Edition)1 review
Christopher G. Moore

Unionsverlag, 2001

not English language book
Be aware that this novel is in the German language, printed by a German publisher, and according to their website this is a re-titled book originally titled COLD HIT, in it's English language first edition.
