The Best Spanish Reference Book for Middle to Advanced Speakers
This is a book that I have been searching for. Most of the books I have come across only give very "stiff-sounding" vocabulary and idioms. The author of this book seems to be someone similar to me in how I learned Spanish; 10 years of school and college and then going to Spanish speaking countries and dating Spanish women. He is very good at explaining a lot of things that are culture related. ...
Caprock Canyonlands: Journeys into the Heart of the Southern Plains (M K Brown Range Life Series)

Dan L. Flores

Deep canyons and deep thoughts-more than a geology book
I paid over-due fines on this book twice at the Austin library...I wouldn't return it until I was finished. It was worth it though. Flores writes in simple terms and speaks from the heart. This book educated me while causing me to reflect on my life...Imprinted DNA from old relatives...I've believed this for years.
A World for Julius: A Novel (Texas Pan American Series)

Alfredo Bryce Echenique
Univ of Texas Pr, 1992
The rich, the poor, and the innocent
Julius is born in "a palace in Salaverry Avenue", coming from two of the wealthiest and most powerful families in Peru around the late fifties. Julius has it all: pretty family, servants who adore him, a forest-like garden, a pool, toys and cares. He grows up within a bubble of welfare. But one day, a little after his father's death, his beloved older sister Cynthia also dies, devastating him. ...

Law Book
This is an easy to follow book that covers any questions an educator may have over just about any law. I loved that it had a regular index as well as an index of court cases.

Jose Maria Arguedas

Conflicting cultures flow deep beneath modern-day Peru
Non-western thoughts, beliefs and fears still permeate 20th.century Peru, a cultural heritage of the Inca empire. Arguedas, although white, learned Quechua as an infant, forced by circumstances to spend long periods with Peruvians of indian extraction, an experience which he would forever remember with deep tenderness and affection, and which would transmit surviving elements of Inca thought ...
Extravagaria (Texas Pan American Series)

Pablo Neruda
Univ of Texas Pr, 1993
Touching this world and the next and loving and hating both
Pablo touched me as no poet that I have read in the last 25 years. His lines particularly sees the world with wisened eyes, writen in his later days. He embraces his past occationally crushing it with bittersweet energy. At the same time he looks forward to rest and what's next. He never stopped Becoming, as Sarte would say, through the years. "Her" declares the need and joy of loving and ...
America's First Cuisines

Sophie D. Coe
Univ of Texas Pr, 1994
Stunning, enlightening, and informative.
A few years ago, I wrote a paper on the original cuisine of the western hemisphere before European exploration.Prepared for the drudgery of a paper, I checked this book out of the library, expecting myself to be put to sleep by the dryness of the topic. How wrong I was! Ms. Coe's book was stunning in how it broadened my understanding of food. Every chapter is chock full of interesting research ...
Blessed McGill: A Novel (Southwestern Writers Collection Series)
4 reviews
Edwin Shrake
Univ of Texas Pr, 1997
A wonderful tale of the western frontier.
McGill is an inspiring hero, immensely capable, with a huge zest for life. He packs incredible adventures into his short life, yet tells his story in a delightfully laid back style. He combines an interest and tolerance of all ideas, religions and philosophies, with a violent intolerance of certain purveyors of them. McGill is a warrior/philosopher, born, raised and ideally suited to this ...

Couldn't Put It Down
This book was given to me as a gift and I couldn't put it down. This heartwarming book takes you into the emotions and thoughts of wild animals. They come alive and you see them as the caring, loving and intelligent beings they are. This book will make you never able to look at a wild animal as a "dumb" animal or expendable resource again.
Flames After Midnight: Murder, Vengeance, and the Desolation of a Texas Community

Monte Akers
Univ of Texas Pr, 1999
A must for Texas history
Much of what is taught of Texas history in schools points to the proud and honorable past of our state. Flames After Midnight tells of a part of our history that we are too often reluctant to relate, but a pert of our past that we should never forget. The outrage of which should never be repeated.
America's Neighborhood Bats

Merlin D. Tuttle
Univ of Texas Pr, 1988
A great, informative book
Dr. Tuttle has set out to redeem the reputation of the bat clan and if people would just read this book I believe he would succeed. This book is packed with information that will help dispel the fear and misunderstanding with which people view bats, but at the same time it is by no means too technical to be readily understood (I first read it when I was about fourteen iirc and enjoyed it as ...
