Breaking Out of Beginner's Spanish105 reviews
Joseph J. Keenan

University of Texas Press, 1994

The Best Spanish Reference Book for Middle to Advanced Speakers
This is a book that I have been searching for. Most of the books I have come across only give very "stiff-sounding" vocabulary and idioms. The author of this book seems to be someone similar to me in how I learned Spanish; 10 years of school and college and then going to Spanish speaking countries and dating Spanish women. He is very good at explaining a lot of things that are culture related. ...

Notes on Blood Meridian (Southwestern Writers Collection Series, Wittliff Collections)3 reviews
John Sepich

University of Texas Press, 2008

I finally got my hands on a copy, and it's great!
After years of hearing about Notes On Blood Meridan by John Sepich, but not wanting to pay US$400 for a copy, I finally went down to my local branch of the public library and requested a copy through the inter-library loan department. In a few weeks a copy was delivered and now I have the copy right in front of me. (The inter-library loan fee was $10.00 but that's better than paying someone ...

H. Joaquin Jackson

University of Texas Press, 2008

A great Ranger Returns
If you found "One Ranger" by H. Joaquin Jackson interesting, yea, inspirational, then you are going to treasure "One Ranger Returns." This is life in Texas, "hair down" face-to-face, how it really is. The chapter by his wife, Shirley, is straight from the heart of a beautiful, highly talented, and courageous woman, sharing the details of her personal life. One Ranger Returns has chapters by ...

"With His Pistol In His Hand": A Border Ballad and Its Hero4 reviews
Américo Paredes

University of Texas Press, 1970

With his pistol in his hand
This outstanding book gives a wonderful look at the rich culture that developed in the geographic region between Mexico and the United States. The people that lived on either side of the border were a mix of religious ideals, values and cultures joined by need, location and lack of powerful policitical presence from either nation. This book outlines the similiarities and the differences ...

Com Licencia!: Brazilian Portuguese for Spanish Speakers (Special Publication)16 reviews
Antônio R.M Simões

University of Texas Press, 1992

Read Description First
This book was written for people who, in addition to English, speak Spanish at a high-intermediate to near-native or native level (obviously not geared towards monolingual Spanish speakers in Mexico, Spain or Argentina). The description mentions it was created due to a rising interest among University Spanish-speaking individuals in the Portuguese language! That being said, it won't help you ...

The Educator's Guide to Texas School Law10 reviews
Jim Walsh, Frank Kemerer, ...

University of Texas Press, 2005

Law Book
This is an easy to follow book that covers any questions an educator may have over just about any law. I loved that it had a regular index as well as an index of court cases.

The Dialogic Imagination: Four Essays (University of Texas Press Slavic Series)6 reviews
M.M. Bakhtin

University of Texas Press, 1982

Bakhtin's most important and influential work on the novel
This book consists of four essays of Bakhtin's "Middle Period", two short and two longer works which have been arranged, according to complexity, with the most accessible essay first and the most difficult last. Cooincidentally, this is also the reverse order in which they were written. None of these essays were avaiable in English before the present translation/compilation by Emerson and ...

A Book of Photographs from Lonesome Dove (Southwestern & Mexican Photography Series, Wittliff Collections at ...23 reviews
Bill Wittliff

University of Texas Press, 2007

For the Love of Gus
I've been in love with Gus since the Mini series and now have him in these wonderful photos. This book is awesome. You can almost hear "Laurie Darlin", and the smells of the trail. The book is dedicted to Pea Eye which was very nice. Thanks to the author.

Edible Wild Mushrooms of North America: A Field-to-kitchen Guide7 reviews
David W. Fischer, Alan E. Bessette

University of Texas Press, 1992

Great for Beginners
For a "first" book on wild mushrooms I found this one to be very good. The pictures show the top, bottom, stems, colors and different parts of each mushroom. There are "warnings" on those that are ediable, but make some people sick, and the NO-NO"s are equally shown and written about. We're just new at this, and for a "starter" book this was just the ticket.

One Ranger: A Memoir (Bridwell Texas History Series)37 reviews
H. Joaquin Jackson, David Marion Wilkinson

University of Texas Press, 2007

They ought to make a movie.
After listening to the CD's, I wanted to become a Ranger or at least a Texan! A riveting story of One Man, One Ranger, you will be totally engrossed in one man's story of his law enforcement career with the Texas Rangers as they were during the latter half of the Twentieth Century. The narration by Rex Linn is first rate and, at times, spellbinding. Don't miss this great epic! If Hollywood ...

On the Plaza: The Politics of Public Space and Culture2 reviews
Setha M. Low

University of Texas Press, 2000

Well written, an unbiased observer
I read this book mainly because as a Tico (Costa Rican) I was very surprised somebody would write a whole book about a couple of places that for me are part of my everyday life. Besides having been to the Plazas of Europe and seen on TV the huge plazas that some other Latin American countries (Mexico, Guatemala, Colombia, Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, etc) have I was curious to find out the reason ...

Flintknapping: Making and Understanding Stone Tools13 reviews
John C. Whittaker

University of Texas Press, 1994

Flintknapping:Making and Understanding Stone Tools
This is an excellent book for the novice or the expert. Everything you need to know about making stone tools the way neolithic man did is easily explained using simple very clear language. The author has done an excellent job explaining the methods, history and reasons behind a very fascinating, little known subject. Those who are interested in the history of technology will love this book.

Sculpting in Time: Tarkovsky The Great Russian Filmaker Discusses His Art17 reviews
Andrey Tarkovsky

University of Texas Press, 1989

Cinema as an Art form
"Sculpting in Time" is truly an amazing work of art in its own right. Certainly filmmakers have written books about their artistic styles in the past. Philosophers have written elaborately on the subject of aesthetics as a whole in the past as well. And yet "Sculpting in Time" offers those with aesthetic interests something truly unique. It should be forewarned that Tarkovsky, like Ingmar ...
