Interesting way to look at world history
The book is really all about how we moved away from drinking plain water, reduced disease and more.
The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher: A Shocking Murder and the Undoing of a Great Victorian Detective

More than I expected
This really was more than just a story about Mr. Whicher. It was an education into detectives-- when English policemen became detectives; thoughts on their work; written accounts of their work and the derivation of words used in the profession. I really enjoyed those asides as well as Mr. Whicher's suspicions. It was a terrible murder and his thoughts and the shock that happened 5 years later ...
An Edible History of Humanity

Tom Standage

Fascinating and fun to read
Throughout history food has had a big impact on civilization and even built civilizations around the world. Its influence over history has reached into modern times, as food shortages and abundances fueled development or cutbacks. AN EDIBLE HISTORY OF HUMANITY deserves a place in any lending library as a fine survey of how humanity's progress has often been dictated by the availability or lack of ...
An Artist in Treason: The Extraordinary Double Life of General James Wilkinson

Andro Linklater
Walker & Company, 2009
Delightful
Prior to Andro Linklater's book on James Wilkinson, I had found that the scholarship on the "Founding Fathers" generation lacking when it came to the story of James Wilkinson. Wilkinson received short shrift or fell through the cracks of the newer progeny of works on the "Founding Fathers" generation (see, e.g. Joseph Ellis' Founding Brothers: The Revolutionary Generation, Joseph Ellis' American ...

Great gift for history buff
My husband loves maps and loves history. So, this seemed to be the perfect gift. As it turns out, I was correct. This is a beautiful book and lives up to the description that appears on the Amazon web site. He really is enjoying the book.
On Hallowed Ground: The Story of Arlington National Cemetery

Robert M Poole
Walker & Company, 2009
The Garden of Stones
Robert Poole comes closer to the heart and soul of Arlington than any other book that has been written. Much of the other information that has been published before is guidebook/history information. Unlike other superficial accounts that show pictures of the grandeur of the cemetery and the ceremony, there is much background, including how close our ceremonies are to those of the Grecian ...
Audition: Everything an Actor Needs to Know to Get the Part

Michael Shurtleff
Walker & Company, 2003
Surprisingly useful advice for writers
For obvious reasons, people have been buying this book for decades because Shurtleff's advice to writers is so useful. I enjoyed reading the book when I first found a copy of it 25 years ago, and a recent re-read made me appreciate his advice. Even though I'm not an actor by any stretch of the imagination. I suppose that I could point out that it's enjoyable reading simply for the anecdotes about ...
The Lexicographer's Dilemma: The Evolution of 'Proper' English, from Shakespeare to South Park
5 reviews
Jack Lynch
Walker & Company, 2009
Enlightening, enjoyable, entertaining
One might expect the first adjective, but certainly not the other two when describing a book on the subjects of linguistics and lexicography. However, I believe that this book will not only appeal to those familiar with these subjects, but also to those taking their first foray into the territory. This isn't some fusty old textbook, laying out the history of the English language, invasion to ...
The Spy Who Came in From the Cold

John le Carre
Walker & Company, 2005
Cold Like No Other
The Spy Who Came in From the Cold This is a jewel in the crown of espionage novels. I fell in love with this book upon its first reading, and have read it many times. No glory here. No other book captures the cold, hard feel of Post War Berlin and the intrigue and duplicity that accommodates the craft. This novel is beautiful in its dreariness, evocative of the desolation and the consciousness ...

Ghosts of Spain: Travels Through Spain and Its Silent Past

Giles Tremlett
Walker & Company, 2008
The Bible for Spain-Lovers
Tremlett incorporates personal anecdotes and experiences into each delightfully informative chapter to the extent that the writing is never dull or dry. As a Spanish-American trying to get in touch with his roots, this book, essential for those who have fallen for Spain, made me even prouder to call Spain my fatherland.

We've Been Here Before
As an IT guy, it's nice to see the parallels of the internet and the early phone system. Especially how hard it was to convice people that the phone is an effective (and cost effective) communication tool. I can almost predict what reactions to the internet are going to happen next!! Great reading if you like this type of thing.

A must read!
A must read! One of the best book I have ever read! This book taught me more topology than the two university courses. A clear and precisely written history and exposition of one the most important ideas in science.

One of America?s foremost language experts presents an annotated edition of A mbrose Bierce?s classic catalog of correct speech. Ambrose Bierce is best known for The Devil's Dictionary , but the prolific journalist, satirist, and fabulist was also a usage maven. In 1909, he published several hundred of his pet peeves in Write It Right: A Little Blacklist of Literary Faults. Bierce's list includes some distinctions still familiar ...

"Time is to clock as mind is to brain."
The book is great, and so clearly so, that I am not going to argue about it. Its illustrations: tasty, superb. Text: lucid, informative. Its structure: dramatic, great man theory of history. One thing that struck me was the book's scattered but arresting meditations on time. Aristotle had defined time as a number that the mind imposes on motion. Seneca said that once you wasted time, you never ...

Best book of directing tips I have read
If you direct, or plan to direct, buy this book! The directorial wisdom in the book is presented in brief, powerful points that are well categorized. The directing books I have found tend to be tedious, dense, and self-important. Notes on Directing is a breath of fresh air--giving you just what you need. One word of caution: while Notes on Directing is an essential and fabulous book, don't ...
