Jacob's Rescue68 reviews
Malka Drucker, Michael Halperin

Yearling, 1994

WHAT A GREAT BOOK!!!
Jacob's Rescue by Malka Drucker and Micheal Halprin is an awesome book to read. It starts with Jacob getting captured by the Nazis and being put in a ghetto but for most of the story he is kept in a small apartment. This book is about an 8 year old boy named Jacob and the extremely brave people who rescued him, Alex and Mela. There were also two brave kids the son and daughter of Alex and ...

The Castle of Llyr56 reviews

Yearling Books, 1994

"Would You Have Me Set Her Free Only to Wed a Witless Prince?"
Lloyd Alexander's five-part "Chronicles of Prydain" is essential reading for anyone, regardless of age, gender or reading preferences. Although they are classed as both fantasy and children's literature, these books can be enjoyed by everyone, not just for its fantastical elements and the broad good vs. evil conflict, but for their gentle humour, loveable characters and vindication of humanity ...

Ordinary Princess, The105 reviews
M.M. Kaye

Yearling, 1993

Awesome little fairy tail
What a great little fairy tail. I wish I would have had it when I was young. It really does a great job of bringing down the myths of perfection. There is nothing wrong with being ordinary!

The Velvet Room77 reviews
Zilpha Keatley Snyder

Yearling, 1988

'The Velvet Room' brings back fond memories
It's been decades since I was a young reader at Sevilla Elementary School in Phoenix, entranced with reading as many library books as I could carry home every few days. Usually, I only checked out each title once. One book, however, kept me coming back for more: "The Velvet Room." Maybe it was because the heroine in the book had a secret place of her own, something as the middle child among ...

Emily of New Moon (Books for Young Readers)87 reviews
Priscilla Galloway

Yearling, 1999

A great, honest, straight forward book.
Emily Starr is a daughter of a faith-confused father that her mother's family has shunned for his poverty. Her mother, Juliet Murray, died when she was five, and then when she is older, her father dies of consumption, leaving her an orphan. Her mother's family takes her in, and teaches her all their traditions and strict codes of honor and pride. Emily makes new friends, grows, and even ...

The Black Stallion101 reviews
Walter Farley

Yearling, 1991

And I don't even like horses...
This, and all of Farley's other horse books, still remain vivid in my mind, 35 years after avidly reading them as a pre-teen---and I hate horses (I think they're stupid, dangerous, overrated beasts)! I remember excitedly going to the local library as a kid, anxious to read the next novel in the series. I'm going to buy all of them for my kids, and hope they discover these timeless books.

The High King (Prydain Chronicles)131 reviews
Lloyd Alexander

Yearling, 1999

A fitting end
This is a fitting end to a great series. All that is meant to happen in these characters lives do happen. Our characters have come, in their own ways, full circle. They all play their parts in this story, and they all fulfill their missions and duties and become the adults they are supposed to be. Sure, we all learned about life and death along the way, but that is how it is in "the real ...

The Great Brain82 reviews
John D. Fitzgerald

Yearling, 1988

A great read but BEWARE.
This book is a wonderful protrait of 19th century rural America, but people should be aware that it was written at a time when there was much more freedom of speech than we have today. Topics in the book include suicide, religious intolerance and fear of immigrants. There is a scene where the boys go skinny dipping and also one story concerns John mating his dog, so this book probably should not ...

All-of-a-kind Family93 reviews
Sydney Taylor, Helen John

Yearling, 1980

Wonderful story!
I read All-of-a-Kind Family when I was a young girl and it was great to read it to my daughter. Loved the story about a close Jewish family and how everyone supports one another. My daughter is now looking forward to reading the other books by the same author.

Mr. Willowby's Christmas Tree (Picture Yearling Book)49 reviews
Robert Barry

Yearling, 1992

My favorite holiday classic
My great aunt ran the library in our little town and if I were to go back and look at the checkout records for this book I probably had it out for 3 solid months every year. My absolute favorite holiday book.... even beats "How the Grinch Stole Christmas". Now every new baby of family and friends receives a copy of this book from me on their first christmas and I can not wait to begin the ...

DOMINIC34 reviews
William Steig

Dell Yearling, 1974

I'd almost forgotten this treasure. Shame on me.
What a wonderful gem of a book, full of wit, charm, and adventure. It reminds us how life SHOULD be led. I'd delighted to have found it again. Do not, I repeat, do not miss it.

The Boys Start the War (Boy/Girl Battle)34 reviews
Phyllis Reynolds Naylor

Yearling, 2002

First in a series
"The Boys Start the War" is a hit in my small Catholic library. After the first girl returned the book, she asked for Book 2, "The Girls Get Even." I had acquired only the first one, waiting to see the reaction. She was so delighted that I bought the entire set. The rest has been popular history! As with this series, let one student read and spread the word, then a reading frenzy follows! In ...

Old Fashioned Girl49 reviews
Louisa May Alcott

Yearling, 1987

An Old Fashioned (and really good) Story!
This book started off a bit slow, but if you read more than a page or two at a time, I think you will like it. This story is about a girl from the country who goes to visit her cousins in New York. Polly's cousin, Fanny, and her friends find Polly "coutrified" and "old fashioned". Everyone falls in love with her because of her quiet manner along with the fact that she dresses and acts her age. ...

Understood Betsy38 reviews
Dorothy Canfield Fisher

Yearling, 1991

So glad to see this book!
Having just viewed a BBC list of 100 books everyone should read, I saw a couple of my childhood favorites, but not "Understood Betsy." I still have my copy and reread it periodically (and I am 70 years old). I wondered if it was still in print and am delighted to see it is available. I recommend it highly for any young girl. P.S. DON'T get the abridged version. You won't want to miss a single ...

Beezus and Ramona45 reviews
Beverly Cleary

Yearling, 1979

Clever, funny, and irresistible
Ask any older sibling about younger siblings, and you'll get one common answer...they're A-N-N-O-Y-I-N-G. They steal your toys, throw tantrums, and constantly steal the spotlight. But, even the most perturbed older siblings know that, deep down, it's impossible not to love younger sisters and brothers - sometimes. Nine-year-old Beatrice "Beezus" Quimby has always been a quiet soul, content ...

Man o'War37 reviews
Walter Farley

Yearling, 1983

In My Opinion, one of Walter Farley's Best !!
I was able to enjoy this book immensely! The details Walter Farley gave were incredible. You didn't miss a thing! You always knew everything that was going on with Man O' War. There wasn't too much detail either. It wasn't 350 pages of blah. In this book you were able to live through all of the races, dissapointment, and momentous occasions of Man O' War and his stable hand Danny. Danny was a ...

Lizard Music36 reviews
Daniel Manus Pinkwater

Yearling, 1996

I Claudia's: Grace
I remember the night that my grandmother gave me this book. My mom was in the hospital for what would have been her last round of chemo and I had been beaten up in school that day for tucking my pants into my argyle socks in a rather unsporting display involving football players, loose change, and vending machines. Pinkwater's book kept me sane through the sixth grade and then some. There are ...

My 3rd Quarter Book Report
This book is about a 10 year old girl named Sookan and she lives with her mother, grandfather, aunt, and little brother. They live in North Korea in 1945. Her and her mother and aunt work in a sock factory for the Japanese soliders in World War II. Changeling41 reviews
Zilpha Keatley Snyder

Yearling, 1986

Thrilled to see it back in print!!
This book gave me new ways of looking at the world, at myself and at my neighbors when I was 11 years old and read it for the first time. And the second. And the third... I don't think there are many American girls who could not identify both with Martha and with Ivy, in turns, as these tender characters vividly represent the dichotomy of female adolescence. I have sought out, purchased and ...
