Olive Kitteridge: Fiction288 reviews
Elizabeth Strout

Random House Trade Paperbacks, 2008

Olive is the Greek Chorus
I once had a cat like Olive: a noted figure in the village, watching the neighbors move in, the neighbors move out. Sniffing the road kill, listening to arguments, sitting quietly on the stoop at the end of the block listening to whispered angst. Everybody knew Murray. She wasn't a particularly likeable cat. She didn't let you pet her or sit next to her for very long. She hissed at ...

The Shadow of the Wind623 reviews
Carlos Ruiz Zafón

Penguin (Non-Classics), 2005

The best Book I read in 2009. One of the best I have read in my life
You find books that absorb you only once in a while, The Shadow of the Wind is one of those, you will begin reading this adventure and be capture it by it until the last page. This book happen in Barcelona, Spain. I like this book so much that after I read the english version, I went and got the Spanish one. Carlos Ruiz Zafon is from Spain, and this book was originally wrote in spanish, and I ...

The Book Thief739 reviews
Markus Zusak

Alfred A. Knopf, 2007

Gets better after first several pages. Book does swear, as warning.
swears, mostly in german, but fairly frequently...in case that concerns you. If it was always in English, it probably would have annoyed me, but since I don't speak much German, it was easy enough to ignore. Excellent story. Also an Excellent audio book. I found the beginning (where he introduces the narrator) A bit mucky. Once I was past that though, loved it.

The White Tiger: A Novel (Man Booker Prize)292 reviews
Aravind Adiga

Free Press, 2008

unexpectedly good
I thought this book would be a preachy look at Indian society and the haves-vs-have-nots of any society. Thankfully, it was so much more than that. In part, a fascinating view of current Indian culture and society with the contrast between modernization and city-life and riches and education versus life-as-it's-been-for-300 years rural poverty illiterate culture. Pulses with the vibrancy and ...

The Time Traveler's Wife2117 reviews
Audrey Niffenegger

Mariner Books, 2004

Mesmerizing, powerful, poignant
I really was mesmerized by this book and enjoyed it tremendously. Amazing effort for a first author. The premise is strange (the protagonist, Henry, travels in time, but cannot control where or when), but the author pulled it off well and made it very believable. The impact of such a "gift" on his family relationships (especially the powerful love between Henry and his wife Clare) and his choices ...

Push: A Novel427 reviews
Sapphire

Vintage, 1997

Great Story
I was told about this book from a cousin who read it. I am blind so I had her order the audio version for me. I finished the whole book that very day. Push/Precious is a story of courage and a testament to human spirit and making away out of the cards you're dealt in life.

Good to Great: Why Some Companies Make the Leap... and Others Don't787 reviews
Jim Collins

HarperBusiness, 2001

A Levle 5 Book
One of the best business books I've "read". The audio quality is great. Mr. Collins is great at reading his book. The pace was excellent. The concepts can be applied to any organization, family or business. The book left me wanting to know more about Fannie Mae and Circuit City, but otherwise a timeless work.

Bob Books, Set 1: Beginning Readers137 reviews
Bobby Lynn Maslen

Scholastic, 2006

great set
I think these books are great. While some complain that they are simple, both visually as well as on an interest level, I think that is where the beauty lies. The pictures are not the point of the story, the words are. The pictures are therefore simple, and not terribly distracting, yet there are enough clues to make it more than just boring words. The stories themselves are also simple, ...

Watch For The Light: Readings For Advent And Christmas18 reviews
Dietrich Bonhoeffer, John Donne, ...

Orbis Books, 2004

Watch for the Light
This is an excellent devotional for Advent. I found it in the bookstore of the National Cathedral in Washington, DC. The noted Christian (and some secular) thinkers from across the centuries take the devotional reader beyond the surface traditions and "candles" of Advent to new places of meditation and thought centering upon the mystery and awe of the birth of Christ. As I followed the readings ...

What Every BODY is Saying: An Ex-FBI Agent's Guide to Speed-Reading People62 reviews
Joe Navarro, Marvin Karlins

Harper Paperbacks, 2008

easy reading and good illustrations
The book is very easy to read, has pictures, and is easy to flip through. Sure, you may read a few pages and say "duh, I knew that" or "thats just common sense", but there is bound to be many observations in the book that you did not realize go on around you everyday. Due to where I grew up, I would consider myself very street smart. Yet, this book did open my eyes to quite a few tells or cues ...

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time1528 reviews
Mark Haddon

Vintage, 2004

Exceptional
Written from the perspective of a teenage boy with autism, the story allowed me access to the inner workings of a mind many of us never understand. I was delighted with the story even when it momentarily confused me.

Slaughterhouse-Five: A Novel752 reviews
Kurt Vonnegut

Dial Press Trade Paperback, 1999

Fate or Free Will?
Slaughterhouse Five is a novel that at its core is about the very meaning of human existence. Are we merely going through the motions of life, or do we control our destinies? The novel's protagonist is Billy pilgrim, whose metaphorical name gives insight into his journey. Billy Pilgrim goes through life; he does not participate in it. Billy believes that all action is preordained, and thus he ...

A Truth Universally Acknowledged: 33 Great Writers on Why We Read Jane Austen16 reviews

Random House, 2009

Reconnecting
This a superb collection of essays about our beloved Jane Austen. I feel reconnected with the Bennetts, the Bingleys and all the unforgettable characters in her books. Each of the essays contains some new insight into the author and her characters. I especially like Harold Bloom's foreword as he seems to find the essence of Jane herself. What a nice chance to reacquaint myself with England and ...
