Reef Fish Identification: Florida, Caribbean, Bahamas - Interactive DVD Edition5 reviews
ReefNet Inc.

ReefNet Inc., 2007

great fish id software
At first I thought the software was too limited in its id's. But then I did the tutorial (yes, I should have done that first) and found it was great, with id's for many many spieces, and many phases (juvenile etc) and great tools to find the fish to id it. The dvd is really nice too! I take my lap top on dive vacations already so this is much more convenient than having to also bring my big ...

Reef Fish Hawaii: Waterproof Pocket Guide5 reviews
John P. Hoover

Awesome underwater!
This waterproof guide completely fulfilled my expectations. It was easy to use while snorkeling, and dried out easily. I easily identified fish in the Oahu reefs.

Gerald Allen, Roger Steene, ...

Reef Fish Identification: Galapagos10 reviews

New World Publications, 2003

This is the book we used
I just returned from a week in the Galapagos islands, snorkeling almost every day. Several members of our guided group had various wildlife books, but our guide had this one and for fish it was all we needed and almost all we used. The pictures -- usually three to a page with accompanying text opposite -- are excellent for identification purposes, often showing variants. The notes include ...

Hello, Fish!: Visiting The Coral Reef2 reviews
Sylvia Earle

National Geographic Children's Books, 2001

Fabulous book for kids of all ages!
The splendid underwater photos in this book bring kids face to face with a variety of coral reef fish including comical clown fish, valiant damselfish and shy gobies. Even little kids love it. Our 17 month-old made me read it five times yesterday! For older kids, the simple but rich text gives a sense of each fish's personality. Highly recommended - Sylvia Earle and Wolcott Henry have ...

Reef Fish Behavior: Florida, Caribbean, Bahamas11 reviews
Paul Humann

New World Publications, 1999

Another excellent Humann Book
This is another excellent book from New World Publications. I've had mine for about 3 years. It explains a lot of those strange behaviors you've noticed such as "kissing" grunts, the pecking order of damsel fish in staghorn coral, attacks on damsel fish gardens by roving hoards of blue tang and grouper runs. It also talks about behaviors that perhaps you haven't noticed and will notice after ...

Coral Reef Fishes: Indo-Pacific and Caribbean5 reviews
Ewald Lieske, Robert Myers

Princeton University Press, 2001

a little treasure
this one is a real must. if I had to choose a single fish ID book to bring along in a dive trip, this handy book would be the one. it is probably more usefull for indo-pacific fishes but also atlantic/caribbean fishes part is pretty good. i guess it is the most complete book on fish identification i ever bought.

The Ultimate Guide to Hawaiian Reef Fishes: Sea Turtles, Dolphins, Whales, and Seals7 reviews
John P. Hoover

Mutual Publishing, 2008

Just like it says...The Ultimate Guide
There are quite a few books out there on Hawaii's reef fishes, but Hoover is one of the top authors. The photos in this books are spectacular and the number of species included is unparalleled. This is the underwater guide you don't want to be without especially if you are on a dive trip to Hawaii. Great for academic research, or just the casual marine enthusiast. I use all of Hoover's books on a ...

Paul Humann, Ned DeLoach

The Reef Set: Reef Fish, Reef Creature and Reef Coral (3 Volumes)37 reviews
Paul Humann, Ned DeLoach

New World Publications, 2002

Increadible Box Set
The is the wildlife bible for scuba divers and fishermen in the Caribbean and Atlantic. I can't say much more than had already been said. The box set is very worth the money, and you will spend countless hours reading through these books.

Fishes of the Great Barrier Reef & Coral Sea5 reviews
John E. Randall

University of Hawaii Press, 1996

A definitive reference book
Many years ago I bought the first edition of this book for the Australian National University Scuba Club. It has survived many, many trips to the Great Barrier Reef on club trips, where it has served as our primary reference for fish identification. The photographs are excellent, and the inclusion of the juvenile forms of many fish is a great asset. Now rebound after years of exacting use by ...

Reef Secrets: Starting Right, Selecting Fishes & Invertebrates, Advanced Biotope Techniques11 reviews
Alf Jacob Nilsen, Svein A. Fossa

TFH Publications, 2003

Excellent
Loved it! Has some of the best reefing information available, without the over-technical mumbo jumbo! The stocking guide is excellent; just lacking on a few species.

Reef Fishes Volume 117 reviews
Scott W. Michael

TFH Publications, 2001

Waiting with Bated Breath
This is one of the best fish books I've ever owned. The author succeeds admirably in his goal of providing a comprehensive reference to reef fishes. There are a couple of things prospective buyers should note: 1) There is more in-depth information about each species than I've seen in any other fish book---by this, I mean pages instead of a paragraph or two. 2) This is only volume 1 of an ...

Handy Pocket Guide to Tropical Coral Reef Fishes (Handy Pocket Guides)2 reviews
Roger Steene, Rudie Kuiter, ...

Periplus Editions, 2004

Great Help!
PLEASE NOTE THAT MY MENTION OF THE GA AQUARIUM FACILITY DOES NOT TRANSLATE IN THE AQUARIUM ENDORSEMENT OF ANY ITEM I MIGHT REFER TO IN MY REVIEW! I am a volunteer at the GA Aquarium and I found this book while on the look out for something quick and easy to refer to while reviewing my fish identification skills. I use this book all the time when I browse around the aquarium and or I have a quick ...

A Diver's Guide to Reef Life13 reviews
Andrea Ferrari, Antonella Ferrari

Nautilus Publishing, 2006

If you need ONE book, this is the one!
This book is the most used book in the library at Raja Ampat's Sorido Bay. It seemed that whatever we were looking for, was in this book. Now I have to resolve the spelling quirk for Thysanozoon. Who is correct? The Ferrari's or the others? Also, a big plus for this book...it stays open wherever you put it, while you are researching all your finds. The construction is ingenious.

Coral Reef Fishes: Dynamics and Diversity in a Complex Ecosystem

Academic Press, 2006

Coral Reef Fishes is the successor of The Ecology of Fishes on Coral Reefs . This new edition includes provocative reviews covering the major areas of reef fish ecology. Concerns about the future health of coral reefs, and recognition that reefs and their fishes are economically important components of the coastal oceans of many tropical nations, have led to enormous growth in research directed at reef fishes. This book is much more than a ...
