Recovering the Reformed Confession
1 review
R Scott Clark
P & R Publishing
, 2008
A Fog Horn for Reformed and Presbyterian Churches
What is a confessional Reformed/Presbyterian church? What is Reformed theology? Piety? Practice? In a clear, concise, and cogent manner, Scott Clark answers these questions in Recovering the Reformed Confession. The book is valuable because in it, Clark demonstrates the qualities of a good historian and a good theologian: he calls a thing what it is. He has done his homework in patristics, ...
The Reformed Pastor

Richard Baxter

A Call to True Sacrificial Ministry
The Reformed Pastor was actually very different than I anticipated, being nothing about reformed theology or even theology at all. "Reformed Pastor" actually means reforming pastors, using the word the same way we would say "reformed hardened criminal." Hmmm. I guess that already tells you this book isn't one of those "feel-good" books. Richard Baxter was famous for two things: being a ...
Crisis in the Reformed Churches: Essays in Commemoration of the Great Synod of Dort

Reformed Fellowship, Inc., 2008
A Much Needed Reprint
This is one of the most notable reprints this year in the field of Reformed theology. It is a much needed reprint - the contents are comprehensive, detailed, to the point, and memorable. If you are a student of Reformed theology with an interest in the Synod or Canons of Dort, you really need this on your shelf. Here's why: First, this book covers the historical situation of the Synod of ...
Reformed Spirituality: An Introduction for Believers

Howard L. Rice

Opening the Door
I can see how Steve was a bit disappointed in this work. The Reformation was, in part a political revolution. To establish the "Protestant" identity, any practice which could trace its roots to Rome was denounced, banned or even destroyed - the age of Rational Christianity was born. Emotional spirituality was looked upon with suspicion. With this book, Rice is reopening a door long ...
What is Reformed Theology?: Understanding the Basics

R. C. Sproul
Baker Books
, 2005
One of R.C. Sproul's best
What is Reformed Theology is one of R.C. Sproul's best books. It is not written for unbelievers, recent converts, or those who have not read much of the Bible. If you believe the gospel and have read most of the New Testament and some of the Old Testament, you are ready to read What is Reformed Theology. By that time, you will have read some of the many verses in Scripture that are the basis ...

Deborah B. Haarsma and Loren D. Haarsma
Faith Alive Christian Resources
, 2007
HIghly recommended
ORIGINS is a refreshing and thought-provoking look at the often controversial topic of how the cosmos began. Being written by two physics professors, who are scientists and Christians, gives the book a hefty helping of validity. The book gives both science and Scripture the respect they deserve and, using scientific and scriptural examples, builds a logical case for the reconciliation of the ...
Always Being Reformed: Faith for a Fragmented World
Shirley C. Guthrie
Westminster John Knox Press
, 2008
Now with new essays by Daniel L. Migliore, Amy Plantinga Pauw, and George W. Stroup, and a Tribute by Charles B. Cousar, this second edition of Shirley Guthrie s classic work includes new essays by three distinguished theologians who explore and respond to Guthrie s central question: How can Christians maintain their identity in a pluralistic society without becoming exclusive, intolerant, and irrelevant? Together, these essays add even more ...
What Is a Reformed Church? (Basics of the Reformed Faith)
1 review
Stephen E. Smallman
P & R Publishing
, 2003
A good short overview of the Reformed tradition
Steve Smallman packs a surprisingly large amount of content into this little booklet. He gives a very short history of the Reformed tradition, then moves on to state some of the key Reformed doctrinal positions. A book of this size is not designed to prove these doctrinal positions, merely to state them and he does a good job. Smallman discusses the Reformed views of Scripture, God's ...
Reformed Dogmatics (4 Volume Set)

Herman Bavinck
Baker Academic
, 2008
Beneficial for education as well as devotion
Reformed Dogmatics by Bavinck is an extremely desirable resource for individuals who want a practical, thorough, and systematic treatment of Reformed theology. He writes from a thoroughly Christo-centric paradigm, illuminating the redeeming character of the triune God. God to Bavinck is a God who condescends towards us and provides a means for us to receive forgiveness and redemption. Given the ...

With a degree in journalism, Hansen is now editor-at-large for Christianity Today and is pursuing an M.Div. at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Deerfield, IL. Feminist And Womanist Essays in Reformed Dogmatics (Columbia Series in Reformed Theology)
Westminster John Knox Press
, 2006
The Columbia Series in Reformed Theology represents a joint commitment by Columbia Theological Seminary and Westminster John Knox Press to provide theological resources from the Reformed tradition for the church today. This series continues in that tradition by examining theological and ethical issues that confront church and society in our own particular time and place. In this unique volume, noted feminist and womanist scholars committed ...
Reformed Theology in America: A History of Its Modern Development

Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Company
, 1985
Great Overview of Reformed Thought
Not only does this book introduce the reader to the history of Reformed theology, but it also gives great explanations of each segment. In my opinion, the two best chapters are Herman Dooyeweerd in North America by C.T. McIntire and Cornelius Van Til by Wesley Roberts. Although short, the chapter on Van Til gives a very good explanation of his epistemology and methodology.

Anthony J. Carter
P & R Publishing

A Short, Simplistic, but very Important Read
Anthony Carter has done the church a great service in giving us this book. While Carter focuses on the relationship between African Americans and the Reformed church community, much of what he says is also applicable to wider evangelicalism. Evangelicals really need to hear Carter on a number of things. First, white evangelicals have to realize that their Christian experience is ...

Will teach you about the authentic history of the Eucharist
Thes jewell of a book contains many careful translations of Eucharistic prayers from the early church through the transition of the reformation. You can read for yourself the changes and diversity of local language and regional variances in the Eucharistic prayers. You see that there was not "one" authorized set of texts. However, you do see that there are clear consistencies throughout all of ...

Very Helpful Tool
Thanks Joel Beeke & Sinclair Ferguson for giving us such a wonderful tool. With the growing interest in reformed theology, there could not be a more helpful tool then this harmony of the great reformational creeds and bibliography by doctrine of great reformed books. In the harmony section the reformed creeds/confessions used are the Belgic Confession, Heidelberg Catechism, Second Helvetic ...
Reformed worship: Worship that is according to Scripture
1 review
Terry Johnson
Reformed Academic Press, 2002
Great Primer on Biblical Worship
Excellent book! While the book is written as mostly an initial primer on Scripture's teaching on worship, it is by no means only "introductory." Terry Johnson opens with a section on "Getting Oriented"--diving into such pressing questions as what is public vs. private worship, how do they relate?; what do we mean by worship, is it in the broad everyday sense, or is it more particular and ...

A Christ Entrenched-Exalting-Entranced Exposition!
I am massively humbled and thankful to God for empowering Pastor Phillips to write this commentary. The book is the product and labor of two separate preaching series through the book of Zechariah and if the preaching produced anything like the reading of the book I pray and hope that Pastor Phillips will see fit to go through Zechariah again. I could comment on the scholarly work, incredible ...

The Glory Of Christ
'The Divine authorship of Holy Scripture needs to be emphasized today, especially since contemporary scholarship tends to focus on the human authors.' pg 10 So says Richard Phillips, and counters the push for 'critical thought', made so common by liberal theologians of a century ago. Retaining the whole counsel of God, Phillips makes his point of departure the sound exegesis of the divinity of ...

Very thorough presentation of the five points of Calvinism and its defense and history
Loraine Boettner leaves very few small stones uncovered with his convincing discourse of the truth of Calvinism. This book is appoximately 400 pages and slightly less than half the book covers the biblical explanation of what the Five Points of Calvinism, while another significant portion of the book devotes an apologetic defense of this doctrine and debunks a lot of myths and misconceptions ...
