Eight Theories of Religion4 reviews
Daniel L. Pals

Oxford University Press, USA, 2006

An excellent introduction to the study of religion
I had to read this book for my introduction to the study of religion-class, but it turned out to be a very interesting book. Pals has a good ability to explain complex terms and theories in relatively easy language, even when dealing with quite obscure ideas and material. The purpose of the book is to give new students and interested laymen a basic overview of the eight most important theories ...

The Illustrated World's Religions: A Guide to Our Wisdom Traditions25 reviews
Huston Smith

HarperOne, 2008

A Beautiful Book!
This is an excellent overview of the world's major religions, well researched and clearly written so that even a novice can understand. Lush photographs, color and black & white, appear on almost every page, illustrating interesting and unique specifics of each religion - i.e., gods, body decorations, services, icons, etc. Very satisfied with this purchase!

The World's Religions: Our Great Wisdom Traditions106 reviews
Huston Smith

HarperOne, 1991

Had to get it for class, but...
I ordered this book for an ethics class I'm taking, but so far it's an excellent read! The chapters are informative and easy to read - definitely something I would enjoy away from class.

Good deal
The book is in really good condition, and the vendor was out of town but he sent an email apologizing for the delay. After that I got it right away.

Religions of the World with Sacred World CD-ROM (10th Edition)11 reviews
Lewis M. Hopfe, Mark R. Woodward

Prentice Hall, 2006

Good enough for an A
This book was my sole source of of study material for a Religions of the World college class I took, and passed with an A. There is a great breakdown and overview of many of the major, and not so major, religions of the world. As well as religions in general. I can't compare it to other books dealing with Religions since I have nothing to compare it to. It is easy to read, and easy to find ...

Anthropology of Religion, Magic, and Witchcraft (2nd Edition)1 review
Rebecca Stein, Philip L Stein

Allyn & Bacon, 2007

Interesting and informative
This book is great for first-time anthropology students; it teaches basic as well as advanced concepts without seeming overly preachy or didactic. Its ethnographic examples focus mainly on so-called "primitive" societies, and allows the discerning reader to visualize the supernatural world time and time again through their eyes. A fantastic read!

World Religions: The Great Faiths Explored & Explained19 reviews
John Bowker

DK ADULT, 2006

In-depth study of religions
In-depth study and analogy of the world's major religions, including ancient faiths and religious beliefs. I enjoyed reading this book very much. Rich chronological analyses. Enormous amount of information. One of my most cherished books.

Experiencing the World's Religions3 reviews
Michael Molloy

McGraw-Hill Humanities/Social Sciences/Languages, 2006

Looking past the price, it's an excellent overview.
While some of the lesser known religions and cults are left out of this book, it does a fabulous job of providing a clear overview to the most influential religions in the world. The historical and cultural perspective provided by the author brought the appropriate perspective to the student. For almost $100.00, you'd think they'd at least give you a hard-cover. But that's what you must expect ...

World Religions: A Voyage of Discovery5 reviews
Jeffrey Brodd

Saint Mary's Press, 2003

Textbook
This exact book is a requirement for a theology course at Walsingham Academy. It arrived in perfect condition, almost as quick as buying in the store, except someone else drove. I am buying more online than ever--the technology is maturing. I would rather sit in my den than drive through all sorts of weather--with no guarantee the book will be there when I arrive. The book is an excellent ...

Experiencing the World's Religions: Tradition, Challenge, and Change with PowerWeb: World Religions10 reviews
Michael Molloy

McGraw-Hill Humanities/Social Sciences/Languages, 2004

I Wish I Could Combine Them All
I've used several college religion texts through the years. Each has its strengths and weaknesses. EXPERIENCING THE WORLD'S RELIGIONS is no exception. I especially like the chapters on Hinduism and modern religious expressions. This book comes close to labeling post-modernity without actually going out on a limb to predict the future. The last chapters elevate this book beyond the norm for ...

Magic, Witchcraft, and Religion: An Anthropological Study of the Supernatural5 reviews
Pamela Moro, James Myers, ...

McGraw-Hill Humanities/Social Sciences/Languages, 2006

Compilation of very educational articles
I had to read this for an Anthropology class (Magic Witchcraft and Religion) and got so much out of it. Not only did my perspectives on some things change but I got a deeper understanding of the mechanics behind religion's role in society. Some of the articles were very funny too especially the one on the Simpson's as social commentary.

Philosophy of Religion: Selected Readings1 review

Oxford University Press, USA, 2006

Excellent selection of readings
This is one of the best anthologies I've ever found on the issues discussed within Philosophy of Religion. It covers different readings from Saint Teresa of Jesus, St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, up to William Alston, Blaise Pascal, Soren Kierkegaard, C. S. Lwis, John Hick, David Hume, William Rowe among many others. The book selects readings from the following subjects: Religious ...

World Religions Today5 reviews
John L Esposito, Darrell J Fasching, ...

Oxford University Press, USA, 2008

Religion faces Modernity and Postmodernity
I have used this book in an introductory class in World Religions. I have found the book to be very usable and filled with the kind of information one needs. At the same time, the authors do not lose sight of the central ideas, practices, and trends of each major religion. In reading the book, one needs to keep in mind the structure of each chapter, which begins with general ideas of religious ...

David Hume, a philosopher of the period often classified as British Empiricism, is the intellectual associate of philosophers John Locke and George Berkeley. Born in Edinburgh in 1711, he attended the University of Edinburgh but did not graduate. He went to France during his 20s, and spent time there working on what would become his most famous work, 'An Enquiry into Human Understanding', first ...

History of the World's Religions (12th Edition)5 reviews
David S. Noss, Blake R. Grangaard

Prentice Hall, 2007

Alive
A truly excellent, penetrating, work. David Noss provides an opportunity for the reader to personally shake hands with each major religion: each is introduced with unobtrusive eloquence and exactitude; each is treated with the utmost respect; and so is the reader accorded this same, unpretentious, sacred reverence. One might gain the impression that a very sane and learned scholar in each ...

When Religion Becomes Evil: Five Warning Signs (Plus)32 reviews
Charles Kimball

HarperOne, 2008

Excellent and insightful
This book was written about religion generally. It goes through the signs of an oppressive or bad belief system. These are belief systems that can influence members to do things which are harmful to society as a whole. In general these groups are the fundamentalist religions. The five items are: 1) Claims of Absolute truth 2) Blind obedience 3) Establish an ideal time (millennium, great ...
