A Unique and Inspiring Wake-up Call
This is one of the most clear-headed books I've read in years on the subject of real, nitty gritty, get your hands dirty spiritual development (as opposed to the fru fru New Age variety). So much of what passes for "spirituality" in our time amounts to some author, celebrity, priest, philosopher or self-appointed guru telling us what to "believe," sight unseen, if we want to reach heaven, attain ...
The Undiscovered Mind: How the Human Brain Defies Replication, Medication, and Explanation

outstanding and controversial
I'm familiar with John Horgan's earlier book, The End of Science, and I recently came across this book. Although I disagree to some degree with perhaps its most basic assertion--that science never will fully understand or explain the mind--The Undiscovered Mind is outstandingly well written and researched, and was a pleasure to read. I was expecting a more one-sided polemic, and there is a ...
Innovations in Government: Research, Recognition, and Replication (Innovative Governance of the 21st Century)
Brookings Institution Press
, 2008
The Innovations in American Government Awards Program began in 1985 with a grant from the Ford Foundation to the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard to conduct a program of awards for innovations in state and local government. The foundation s objective was ambitious and, in an era of "government is the problem" rhetoric, determinedly proactive. It sought to counter declining public confidence in government by highlighting innovative and ...

Highly Recommended
Although I have been nebulously aware of the term "Cellular Automata" for about 25 years, it was not until I read the book Cellular Automata that I really understood what it entails. As a result, I have become enamored with the field and its mathematical elegance. It is unfortunate for this fascinating field of study, that it is called Cellular Automata -- a marketing disaster if you ask me. ...

a great help
I have never used any other SQL SERVER Replication books, so I can't compare it to anything else. I needed a book for reference as I set up a large scale SQL replication enviornment. I have done it in Oracle, and was experience with SQL 2005, but never SQL replication. This book gave me enough knowledge that I was able to accomplish some advanced replication. I highly recommend it for those, ...

Excellent book for advanced users
The title of this book is very appropriate. Great coverage on performance, reliability, backup & recovery. Definitely not an introductory book. There were a couple of places where the writing was hard to follow, but I'm sure that'll be fixed in the next printing.

Excellent technical detail
This is a great reference for Oracle replication and does an excellent job of explaining the issues, especially multimaster replication. I have Freemans's Oracle new features book also, and I enjoy the style and cadence of the writing style. The text is not preachy and shows with clear examples all of the ways to set up and use Oracle replication. I highly recommend this book, and the price is ...

Excellent hands on how-to
No fluff, just stuff you need to get the Server side of merge replication up and running for PDAs and other WinCE devices, with steps in the right order, screen shots and annotation on what the choices mean, which are the scalable routes to take, etc. This is an excellent companion to a theory book such as Pro SQL Server 2005 Replication (Definitive Guide)

Get a jump on the replication learning curve
I'm new to SQL Server replication and this book is exactly what I needed. Mr. Cotter's book provides insights, tips and experiences that have put me far ahead of the learning curve. He distills his diverse knowledge on the subject into a form that is very helpful for the novice, like myself, and I suspect it is also helpful for the person that is moderately experienced with replication and the ...

A Fascinating Work about Today's Financial Alchemy
he book provides an extremely enlightening treatment of arcane financial strategies that have derived from Nobel Laureate winning option pricing theory. It is a well-written description of how very smart people are able to "outwit" other supposed very smart people by promising something for nothing. There will always be those who will dream up complicated strategies that purport to promise ...

Alternative Beta Strategies and Hedge Fund Replication
Lars Jaeger
Wiley
, 2008
The subject of Hedge fund replication and alternative beta has within a short amount of time expanded from the field of academic research into the area of investing and has become one of the dominant discussions in the hedge fund industry. It has long been recognized that a main part of a Hedge Fund’s s return corresponds to risk premiums rather than market inefficiencies, i.e. from “beta” instead of “alpha”. ...

feasible for the personal computer
Korn offers a recent view of Monte Carlo simulations. These have been performed since the 1950s. But Korn's approach emphasises what is feasible to you, on a standard personal computer. Buttressed by the enclosed CD, that has code readily modifiable to many applications. It is also nice that linux is supported, in addition to Microsoft Windows. Perhaps this is an acknowledgement that scientists ...

Changing Order: Replication and Induction in Scientific Practice
Harry M. Collins
University Of Chicago Press
, 1992
This fascinating study in the sociology of science explores the way scientists conduct, and draw conclusions from, their experiments. The book is organized around three case studies: replication of the TEA-laser, detecting gravitational rotation, and some experiments in the paranormal. "In his superb book, Collins shows why the quest for certainty is disappointed. He shows that standards of replication are, of course, social, and that there is ...
