The Intelligent Investor: The Definitive Book on Value Investing. A Book of Practical Counsel (Revised ...157 reviews
Benjamin Graham, Jason Zweig

Collins Business, 2003

A must-read classic on value investing
"An investment is one which, upon analysis, promises safety of principal and an adequate return. Anything else is a speculation and should be avoided." - Benjamin Graham This quote pretty much sums up Graham's macro perspective on investing. Many investors view Benjamin Graham is the father of value investing and that's not far-fetched. This work is one of the best out there on the topic of ...

How to Cook Everything (Completely Revised 10th Anniversary Edition), Completely Revised 10th Anniversary ...65 reviews
Mark Bittman

Wiley, 2008

A Kitchen Staple
Just as others have said, the name says it all. It pretty much contains everything or at least a variation of everything. If there was no internet and I could only choose one cookbook this would most likely be it. Those moments when I think, "Hey I want to make some ______." this is the first place I look. About 97% of the time it's in there, or at least something close. The book also ...

SAS Survival Handbook, Revised Edition: For Any Climate, in Any Situation15 reviews
John 'lofty' Wiseman

Harper Paperbacks, 2009

Best survival guide
I own and love this book. It is a super comprehensive guide to surviving all sorts of extreme emergencies in a variety of geographic zones and climates. Plane crashes, car crashes, getting lost in the wilderness, tsunamis, earthquakes, terrorist attacks - you name it, book covers it! The author is an authority on survival, being the former survival instructor or the British SAS special forces ...

Freakonomics [Revised and Expanded]: A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything1701 reviews
Stephen J. Dubner

William Morrow, 2006

Good for thinking outside of the box, but not much else
Freakonomics was an enjoyable romp through seemingly random industries (sumo wrestling to drug dealing) that provided unique and fascinating insight into these social arenas. While the knowledge contained in this book provides good dinnertime conversation (assuming your companions have an IQ higher than a walrus, no offense to walrus) the book lacks a decent single thesis. There is no ultimate ...

Musicophilia: Tales of Music and the Brain, Revised and Expanded Edition117 reviews
Oliver Sacks

Vintage, 2008

A Wonderful Set of Stories About the Power of Music
Oliver Sacks is an incredibly interesting person to read. His ability to keep ideas at a fairly simple level while maintaining all the detail in a story is wonderful, and every work of his I have read I have enjoyed greatly. This is no exception; Musicophilia is a great read for anyone looking to better understand the core concept of music and the brain. Elegantly written, it is a joy to read, ...

The Out-of-Sync Child: Recognizing and Coping with Sensory Processing Disorder, Revised Edition69 reviews
Carol Kranowitz

Perigee Trade, 2006

every parent should read
It's amazing how many behaviors are characteristics of 'sensory processing disorder'!This book lists behaviors and their causes, how to get help, and what type of treatment to expect. It has hypothetical case studies, contrasts with other disorders with similar symptoms, and questions for evaluation. The disorder is little known but very widespread. It's important that parents -- and other ...

The America's Test Kitchen Family Cookbook, Heavy-Duty Revised Edition172 reviews
America's Test Kitchen

America's Test Kitchen, 2006

One of the very best "must have" cookbooks!
After watching America's test kitchen programs on TV, I was thrilled to find this cookbook. The recipes are easy to understand with great pictures. In addition to the recipes (the foundation of a cookbook), they have detailed descriptions of methods they have demonstrated on their show, as well as the results of their testing of food products, gadgets, pots and pans, bakeware, etc. This is for ...

Feeling Good: The New Mood Therapy Revised and Updated237 reviews
David D. Burns

Harper, 1999

Think Good, Feel Good
The title of my review is actually a summary of how this book plans to make you feel better. The book is authored by a someone who has had a lot of experience using cognitive therapy techniques to try and improve people's depression. Cognitive therapy's premise is that your thinking (messages that you are giving yourself all day long) directly inflences your moods and how you feel. Therefore, ...

Henry M. Robert III, William J. Evans, ...

Da Capo Press, 2004

Great book. Concise. Helpful
It was just what I needed. The merchant was timely. Why bother with the big book when this one is more than the average boardroom director needs.

The Nursing Mother's Companion: Revised Edition108 reviews
Kathleen Huggins

Harvard Common Press, 2005

There is a reason it is titled "companion"
This book was very helpful with nursing issues. Other books devote a chapter or a few pages to nursing, this is a whole book! I keep it on my end table where I nurse and refer to it all the time. Great buy.

Top Chef: The Cookbook, Revised Edition: Original Interviews and Recipes from Bravo's hit show3 reviews
By the Creators of Top Chef

Chronicle Books, 2009

Look closely and you'll see that they do have a couple of new recipes
This edition is VERY similar to the earlier one but it does have a couple of recipes from the last couple of seasons that have been added (one of Stephanie's recipes and one of Hosea's recipes). I don't have the original version so I am quite pleased with this cookbook! If you are a Top Chef junkie, you'll enjoy reading it.

The Taste of Home Cookbook- New Revised: One Recipe four ways13 reviews
Taste of Home

Readers Digest, 2008

Best Cookbook ever!!!
I bought this cookbook on a whim at a local Taste of Home cooking show and paid $25 for it. I have spent the past several days going through it from cover to cover. I tried my first recipe from it last night(Pesto Pork Roast), and it was wonderful and simple. I have several more recipes lined up to try asap. I do not understand the negative review. I collect recipe books and I don't have ...

Predictably Irrational, Revised and Expanded Edition: The Hidden Forces That Shape Our Decisions294 reviews
Dan Ariely

Harper, 2009

Wonderful Book
This was a fascinating look into human behavior. Each case was backed-up with scientific experiments that were well presented and easy reading. The author also had reasonable suggestions on how to use the information. For instance, wouldn't it be smart to implement "Health Care Reform" in one small state to see how it went before creating upheaval in the entire USA on unproven ideas? I have ...

Solve Your Child's Sleep Problems: New, Revised, and Expanded Edition448 reviews
Richard Ferber

Fireside, 2006

Thank you, Dr. Ferber!
Dr. Ferber, you have made a believer out of me! When I had initially heard about the Ferber method, I was skeptical. Maybe it would work for other babies, but not ours, a spirited baby boy who could scream at the top of his lungs for over an hour. We had tried to "cry him out", a battle of the wills, and he won. Our pride and joy, who had started sleeping through the night at four months ...
