Revision: A Creative Approach to Writing and Rewriting Fiction

Better than its title
This book is better than its title. The premise is that writing is re-vision and revision. The distinction is more than just spelling. Much of this book discusses the process, and how you view your work from its early stages as the glimmer of an idea to looking at it again as finished draft ready for revisiting. He also demystifies the all-too-common result of having a first draft that bears ...

Comparative Literature in the Age of Multiculturalism (Parallax: Re-visions of Culture and Society)
The Johns Hopkins University Press
, 1994
In recent years, the idea of multiculturalism has become a powerful -- and controversial -- influence in a variety of social and cultural territories. In the academic world it has profoundly influenced curriculum and scholarship in the humanities, particularly in traditionally Eurocentric disciplines such as comparative literature. It was hardly surprising, then, that the 1993 report "Comparative Literature at the Turn of the Century" -- which ...

Ca marche!
I'm using it right now for French 201. The only drawback is that it has a french/english dictionary in the back and not an english/french like the previous book. I think the authors presume that we shouldn't be using english at all (or minimally). Even so, it would come in handy for those of us still struggling with vocabulary. Merci!

Can't Find Better
I took many courses with Georgia Heard when I was a graduate student at Columbia University. She changed my life as a teacher and writer. I cannot stop writing poetry and fiction because of her. Nor can I squelch my desire to work with students (primary school through adult ed) on their own poems. The products of my students' writing and my own writing knock the pants off practically ...

delightful what if alternate history tales
This fifteen short story collection contains what if alternate history tales that will delight genre fans. Each tale takes a key scientific or technological element and changes when it occurred so that it either intersects at an earlier pivotal moment in history such as the Sumerians inventing the printing press in BC or never materialized such as Galileo fails to release his findings. The ...

A practical professional title
Glancing through this book, I was impressed with the coverage of this professional volume. It begins with an introduction that discusses the need for revision generally and for revision in our writing education and addressing the challenges of teaching revision, pointing out that kids don't want to revise and haven't been taught the importance of it. The rest of the book is a practical guide to ...

Indispensable
I'm currently doing a revision of a completed first draft while also structuring the plots for two new novels. Sitting next to my keyboard are two books by James Scott Bell, PLOT & STRUCTURE and REVISION & SELF-EDITING. My copies are underlined, annotated, dog-eared, and well-thumbed. I've learned that no matter how much I think I know about writing, I've always got a lot to learn, and Bell is ...

Required reading for writing teachers
Tired of trying to browbeat your students into revising their writing? Afraid you might scream if you have to slog through The Writing Process one more time? Try this welcome antedote. Humorously written but based on sound theory, Mr. Lane's book is chock-full of exercises that are fun, practical, easy to modify, and based on classroom experience. I've used them with third and fourth graders, ...

A jewel in my art book collection.
Checking the worn copy of this book from the library numerous times had made Mark Tansey one of my alltime favorite artists. Everytime I went into a bookstore, I looked for it. Never any luck, until I was in a used bookstore in Bellingham, Washington. I had already scoured the Art section as usual. When I was leaving, my eye happened to catch the spine in a stack of randomly placed books near ...
Meaningful Course Revision: Enhancing Academic Engagement Using Student Learning Data (JB - Anker)
Catherine M. Wehlburg
Anker Publishing Company, Inc.
, 2006
Faculty often make course changes based on reasons other than data. Intuition or student comments and satisfaction may be important guides, but they don?t tell how much a student is learning or whether that learning transfers to other courses. This book makes the case for the use of multiple, direct measures of student learning outcomes data to enhance course development and guide meaningful course revision and decision-making. Focusing on ...

Visions and Revisions: Women's Narrative in Twentieth-Century Spain. (Foro Hispanico)
Rodopi
, 2008
The desire to see afresh, to see differently, both old and not-so-old texts underlies Visions and Revisions: Women's Narrative in Twentieth-Century Spain . The authors studied, born between 1867 and l966, evince an interest in one or more of the issues that structure and give unity to this book: the construction of the self, concepts of gender and nation, center and margin, and efforts to recover and/or reconstruct the past, both individual ...
