Tender Is the Night135 reviews
F. Scott Fitzgerald

Scribner, 1995

Tough Times on the Riviera
Not the most cohesive of Fitzgerald's work, Tender is the Night does deliver on Fitzgerald's beautiful prose and heartbreaking characterizations. The novel explores the disintegration of a promising young American doctor whose idealism comes under the crushing weight of hard capitalistic power. At times it becomes difficult to believe in the main character's steady decline since early in the ...

Extra Virgin: A Young Woman Discovers the Italian Riviera, Where Every Month Is Enchanted50 reviews
Annie Hawes

Harper Paperbacks, 2002

Witty & full of interesting detail
A great read. Witty, engrossing account of Annie & sister's unplanned purchase of a rundown farmhouse in Liguria on the Italian Riviera, and their (mis)adventures and interactions with the locals. Very funny, affectionately sly observations of human nature and the idiosyncrasies and highlights of Italian village life, olives and the love of good food. And interesting information about local olive ...

Provence and Cote D'Azur (Eyewitness Travel Guides)14 reviews
DK Publishing

DK Travel, 2006

visually appealing
Visually appealing- lots and lots of photos, illustrations and diagrams. This is a book that will inspire you to see more than you might otherwise. Small and convenient in size, and coverage is very complete

Moon Cancun and Cozumel: Including the Riviera Maya (Moon Handbooks)3 reviews
Gary Chandler, Liza Prado

Avalon Travel Publishing, 2007

Very Informative
I found this book to be very helpful and up to date. The details provided were first rate. It even listed the ferry schedule to Isla Mujeres - something that other guides only glossed over. The maps were useful too. There were a lot of information on cenotes, and where they are located. I liked it so much that I have just bought the Moon travel guide to the Four Corners.

Garden of Eden84 reviews
Ernest Hemingway

Scribner, 1995

Foolishly, I put off reading this
Why the negative buzz about this book? It is Hemingway; it is very good Hemingway. Unfortunately, it is Hemingway edited--heavily edited; apparently hundreds of pages of manuscript were cut. I would like to read these additional pages. . .I think. I wouldn't want to read additional pages of the details of the marriage between David and Catherine, a marriage ruined by sexual curiousity, by ...

Playa del Carmen, Tulum & The Riviera Maya: Great Destinations Mexico: A Complete Guide (Great Destinations) ...14 reviews
Joshua Eden Hinsdale

Countryman, 2006

Best guidebook for Playa del Carmen out there!!!!!!!!!!
Joshua Hinsdale has written what I feel to be the best guidebook for the area. I do not think that he has missed a detail and I knew so much before I went to Playa del Carmen that I was able to have the best vacation possible.

The Northern Exposure Cookbook: A Community Cookbook from the Heart of the Alaskan Riviera12 reviews
Ellis Weiner

McGraw-Hill/Contemporary, 1993

A must have for northern exposure fans
This cookbook is so much fun and a must for any northern exposure fan. All the recipes you heard mentioned from Adam and the zabaglione he whipped up for Eve on their first date to the Cassoulet Chris had at the monastery. It has a little intro to each recipe done in character by the character. There are simple funny recipes like Joel's Jell-O and Marilynn's potatoes and more detailed ones ...

Elizabeth Adler

St. Martin's Paperbacks, 2004

Curly, Carrot-Top Chef With Jasmine & Cream. Beauty I Dream.
Dis iz da place if you want to explore: Sensitive, sauntering sensuality, babbling beauty (as in the symbolic brook, not the flapping mouth)... globetrotters taking up residence anywhere around or in (Yacht) the Mediterranean. The "Home" in your feet baring beaches in Saint-Tropez. At the end of last August I began reading my first Elizabeth Adler novel, THE HOTEL RIVERA. Most reviews ...

Frommer's Provence & the Riviera (Frommer's Complete)3 reviews
Darwin Porter, Danforth Prince

Frommers, 2007

Can't wait to see Provence
I have always loved the Frommer's Guides and this one is no disappointment. Very useful information, with plenty of listings of restaurants, hotels, and attractions which coem in handy in a guide book. Other guide books do not have nearly as much information. So I highly recommend this one - short & sweet!

Afloat (New York Review Books Classics)2 reviews
Guy De Maupassant

NYRB Classics, 2008

Afloat
As a sailor I read this little book like reading a yacht's log book. The device is fresh and alive. Much of how he wrote it captures the feeling of being with him on that yacht with the wind taking Guy, you and a wide range of thoughts anywhere on a whim. You are always brought back to the "Bel-Ami" itself to move forward-book as yacht. It has been said that to understand the French you had to ...

We never go on holiday without buying an Eye Witness guide for the area we are visiting. This one was invaluable for our recent holiday in Santa Margherita Ligure from finding a restaurant to getting on a bus.

Enchanted Liguria: A Celebration of the Culture, Lifestyle and Food of the Italian Riviera3 reviews

superb
It's the next best thing to being in Italy. William Murray, long-time New Yorker contributor and author of Italy, the Fatal Gift For good reason, the region has been called "Enchanted Liguria" by authors David Downie and Alison Harris. In their lavishly illustrated book (Rizzoli, 1997), this husband-and-wife team have vividly captured the culture, history, and daily life of this delightful ...

Cruising the Mexican Riviera & Baja: A Guide to the Ships & the Ports of Call (Cruising the Mexican Riviera & ...6 reviews
Larry H. Ludmer

Hunter Publishing (NJ), 2005

All the Information in an Easy Read
My wife and I are experienced cruisers. We are cruising the Mexican Riveria in February. Mr. Ludmer's comments about cruising, in general and preparing for a cruise are right on the mark. The reason we bought the book is for the information on the ports. It is all right there, in an easy to read, easy to find format. Of course we haven't been on the cruise yet. We always take a travel ...
