The Once and Future King325 reviews
Terence Hanbury White

Ace, 1987

creative, rich and wonderful
I loved how detailed and orginal the story was. It's like T.H. White instead of trying to tell the complete story of King Arthur, takes little snippets of the parts he thought were particularly interesting or wonderful and makes them beautiful and rich with life and meaning. His words are full of love and light. The Once and Future King

Confessions (Penguin Classics)24 reviews
Saint Augustine of Hippo

Penguin Classics, 1961

Worthwhile even for agnostics
Before reading any St. Augustine, I had formed an image of him as an intolerant puritan, almost Taliban-esque. As an agnostic, I did not at all expect to find him a sympathetic figure. The "Confessions," however, reveal a warmly human, hugely intelligent man, relating his own open-minded spiritual journey, which included way-stops at Manicheeism and neo-Platonism. Augustine formulated his ...

Book Yourself Solid: The Fastest, Easiest, and Most Reliable System for Getting More Clients Than You Can ...109 reviews
Michael Port

Wiley, 2008

Tells How to Become a Magnet for Clients
Even though I became an entrepreneur in 1996 by launching my company, and have read numerous books about marketing my services, Michael Port presented promotional ideas and strategies that helped me. Right away, I re-examined my niche and how I describe my services to prospective clients. During one of my visits to a medical office as a patient, a nurse's assistant noticed that I was reading ...

The Stranger524 reviews
Albert Camus

Vintage, 1989

Haunting masterpiece with impact
Meursault's story begins with his mother's death; "Maman died today.Or yesterday maybe, I don't know." In first person perspective, he introduces his neighbor and best friend. He explains his world to you, all the while showing minimal emotion toward the tragedies that encroach upon his life. You begin to feel a bond to Meursault as much as you feel his distance. Each event pulls you closer to ...

Truman277 reviews
David McCullough

Simon & Schuster, 1993

wonderful sense of American history
I have read most of McCullough's books, and so I knew that after reading this I would understand Harry S. Truman more deeply than I ever had. What I didn't know what was that I would learn so much about 20th century American history. McCullough is a great story-teller. His use of historical details to recreate the man and the times is magnificent. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

The Last Days of Socrates (Penguin Classics)9 reviews
Plato

Penguin Classics, 2003

The Last Days of Socrates
In this simply-organized compilation of Socratic Dialogues, I would offer that the way Penguin Classics presents them cannot be outdone. The playfully loquacious dialogues are pure-gold bricks of logic, and should therefore be cherished greatly. This book is easy to understand because there are endnotes on every page. Spanning the entirety of over 200 juicy pages, Harold Tarrant and Hugh ...

Living a Life of Inner Peace25 reviews
Eckhart Tolle

New World Library, 2004

Excellent but Tolle Background Helpful
I bought this CD set after reading "A New Earth" and just before starting "The Power of Now." I love these CDs because Mr. Tolle is so enjoyable to listen to. Also, the CDs are a good way for me to review the basic concepts behind Tolle's most recent works, and Tolle also helps you understand how to live in the present. My only word of advice is that I would definitely not purchase these CDs ...

The Long Emergency: Surviving the End of Oil, Climate Change, and Other Converging Catastrophes of the ...210 reviews

Grove Press, 2006

The Long Emergency
An excellent argument that we are at or approaching the peak oil production plateau, and speculates on the drastic future we may expect. Well done. Provokes a lot of thought about how one should adapt to eventually intolerable circumstances!

Sophocles I: Oedipus The King, Oedipus at Colonus, Antigone (The Complete Greek Tragedies)12 reviews
Sophocles

University Of Chicago Press, 1991

Translations
Researching translations is never an easy task, and in this case, where you'll have to search on Amazon for the title and the translator to find what you want, it's particularly difficult. Here's what I've found by comparing several editions: 1. David Grene translation: Seems to be accurate, yet not unwieldy as such. My pick. Language is used precisely, but not to the point where it's ...

The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life11 reviews
Erving Goffman

Anchor, 1959

A sociological classic
I remember reading this work many years ago and feeling a whole new world had opened up to me in relation to understanding ' the self'. Instead of looking inward only it was necessary to see the way we reshape ourselves in response to the kind of people we are with. The ' self' becomes a ' construct' which alters with performance, and with each new set of characters or scene we met. And so we ...

Moyers on Democracy11 reviews
Bill Moyers

Doubleday, 2008

The Call for Truth
Bill Moyers writes with passion and outrage about the current state of affairs in America. The speeches in this book were given over a period of years from 1987 to 2007. Each speech is introduced with a current comment. Unfortunately the issues addressed haven't changed with time other than being more in need of change. My favorite speeches were the eulogies which he was asked to give for ...

Case Files Pediatrics (Lange Case Files)5 reviews
Eugene C. Toy, Robert J. Yetman, ...

McGraw-Hill Medical, 2006

Excellent light read for Step 2 CK
I started using Case Files halfway through my 3rd year as it was gaining popularity. My shelf grades soared with this light reading. Unfortunately, I had pediatrics before I learned about the Case Files series. So, for Step 2, I needed a good review source. I read this in 2 days and peds was one of my best sections on Step 2. I can't stress enough how the layout of this series lends to a ...

Taking Charge of Your Fertility: The Definitive Guide to Natural Birth Control, Pregnancy Achievement, and ...1054 reviews
Toni Weschler

Collins, 2001

Excellent resource of information
I have already talked about this book to friends and they have quickly purchased this book. It is extremely educational. I come from a health background taking A&P and learning an extensive amount of info but none to this extent on the subject. It is good if you are a teen to the peak of menopause. It really is a good read. My sister has been having trouble with getting pregnant and ...

Aeschylus I: Oresteia: Agamemnon, The Libation Bearers, The Eumenides (The Complete Greek Tragedies)12 reviews
Aeschylus

University Of Chicago Press, 1969

An excellent trilogy
Aeschylus (525-456 BC) is the father of Greek tragedies (one legend reports that Dionysus himself commanded Aeschylus to write them). Of the seventy tragedies that he wrote, only seven have survived to the present day. These three plays form the most complete tetralogy that we have (a tetralogy contained three tragedies and one satyr play - a semi-religious, semi-mocking performance that acted as ...

Modern Epidemiology1 review
Kenneth J Rothman, Sander Greenland, ...

Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2008

As yet, an unparalleled reference on the science of epidemiology
Masterly. Rothman and coworkers' 3rd edition of the classic `Modern Epidemiology' is a landmark step in presenting with cohesiveness and clarity traditional + cutting-edge concepts and methods for observational research (and by extension for experimental research on human subjects as well, since problems like unblinding or loss-to-follow-up may reintroduce bias in clinical trials after ...

Essentials of Anatomy And Physiology2 reviews
Valerie C. Scanlon, Tina Sanders

F. A. Davis Company, 2006

Excellent Beginner's A&P Text
This is the perfect text for those with a need for a beginner's course in Anatomy and Physiology. It's brief, very readable, and filled with great graphics and highlighted tables of important information. Every time I thought of something I remembered or had a question about (such as common ailments, diseases, etc.) as I read the text, it was usually covered in a call-out box. Well done!

A Year in Provence130 reviews
Peter Mayle

Vintage, 1991

Part Travelogue; Part Love Letter
I'm probably the last person in the world to read this charming book. My interest was stirred by the Russell Crowe film A GOOD YEAR which has been running on the premium channels for the last two months. The movie is heartwarming, witty, and full of sweet charm. Naturally I had to seek out the author of the book from which the movie was adapted. In doing so, I bought all of the other books ...

Spiritual Leadership: Principles of Excellence for Every Believer47 reviews
J.Oswald Sanders

Moody Publishers, 2007

Spiritual Leadership
Easy to read with good information on leadership in the church. I also like the "reflection questions" at the end of each chapter.

Seeing Ourselves: Classic, Contemporary, and Cross-Cultural Readings in Sociology3 reviews
John J. Macionis, Nijole V. Benokraitis

Prentice Hall, 2006

the absolutely perfect text for an intro to soc class
I used this text for an intro to sociology class at a major university. I love that it is different from the run-of-the-mill intro textbook; instead of 20+ chapters of terms, definitions, etc., this book contains whole or excerpted readings, many of which are classic sociological articles (for example, On Being Sane in Insane Places and The McDonaldization of America). With very few exceptions, ...
