purejoy - like the man himself
Louis Armstrong is one of the central figures along with Duke Ellington of Giddins's incredible Visions of Jazz, and that sent me to Satchmo, a mindblowing collection of photographs and a biographical and musical discussion that brings the man and his work to life. Although Giddins covers some of the same ground here as in Visions, it is a far more expansive study built on the idea that ...

Not for 4-8 year olds
This book is described as being for children ages 4-8. But there are far too many words per page and the vocabulary is more for good readers who are 9-12 and for adults. I love that it is about a rescue pug, and I used to have a black pug named Satchmo, so that endeared me to the book. But it's not really for children. I volunteer with my black pug in a library program called "Doggone Good ...
Satchmo Blows Up the World: Jazz Ambassadors Play the Cold War

The Politics of Jazz
Von Eschen is a historian of the cold war, and her book overlaps other recent works detailing how the demands of the cold war forced otherwise cautious presidential administrations to back civil rights and government support for the arts when they really would have preferred to buckle under to conservative congressional lobbies and their own reactionary impulses. The overlap is unfortunate, as ...

Satchmo: My Life in New Orleans
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The editors kept Armstrong's voice true to the legend and honest in its depictions of his sometimes harsh life in New Orleans. However, Artmstrong's sense of humor and goodness shine through his story and the reader really learns to like him as a person as well as a great musician. As a native New Orleanian, I really enjoyed his descriptions of the city ...

A great gift for any Louis Armstrong fan
This is a wonderful coffee table book, perfect for paging through while listening to your favorite Louis Armstrong recordings. The photographs include include wonderful candid shots of Louis both on and offstage (despite the title). The book also has some great anecdotal material regarding Louis' life and work. Perusing this book has made me look forward to visiting the newly opened Armstrong ...

This one is for young people
This is a very brief biography. It belongs in the children's literature section. It may be fine in that context, but I can't make such a judgment. I was somewhat taken aback when my copy arrived, and returned it immediately.

this jazz man is #1!
we got this book as a gift and thought it was pretty cute, but it has turned out to be one of our daughter's favorites! she even tries to snap along and she's only 14 months! i think the part we'll eventually like best is the bit of history included - there's a great description of the 9 jazz musicians showcased in the book. it's a lot of fun to read and there is a lot of interaction possible. ...

It's almost like "Satchmo" is back!
Swinging, Singing Satchmo by Sanford Brown was a great reference book, especially if you have to write a report on Louis Armstrong. It is very easy to use when you have to quickly look up information. And it's also great just to read.

All With A Smile
Love Loius Armstrong? How could you not? This is his childhood in New Orleans in Satchmo's own words. The reading is as colorful as his music, full of vitality and fun. Satchmo's take on life is clearly illustrated in this book. He greets life with a smile and takes troubles all with a smile. This book is an absolute joy to read. I can hear the music and feel the energy of those days in ...
