Sculpture since 1945 (Oxford History of Art)3 reviews
Andrew Causey

Oxford University Pr USA, 1998

great art history book
I checked out this book from the public library and read it twice before I started learning sculpture. Now I finally bought it and I'm still reading it. It's a wonderful book a have to get inspired from the masterpieces. Know the trends and thoughts in the sculpture field. Helps you create artworks from a border point of view, also improve the criticism knowledge.

Roman Sculpture (Yale Publications in the History of Art)2 reviews
Diana E. E. Kleiner

Yale University Press, 1994

This book gives Roman art an identity of its own.
Ms. Kleiner does indeed show how eclectic Roman sculpture is/was. But she also shows and explains how artists wrought texture out of stone, their flare for facial features, the thoughtful tilt of the head or the significance of a raised eyebrow. There is more to Romans than conquest. This book makes that clear. This book also does an excellent job of relating historical events to tastes in ...

A Sculpture Reader: Contemporary Sculpture Since 1980 (Perspectives on Contemporary Sculpture)1 review

Isc Press, 2006

Breaking the Mold: Contemporary Sculpure and the Nature of Reality
This collection is a work of astonishing intellectual insight and viscerally affecting beauty. The authors authoritatively, even brazenly, examine the way contemporary artists reconceptualized perceptual reality through sculpture. It is the contemporary sculptors who shattered the idea that sculpture must in some way represent the human body - an idea that persisted for millenia - and ...

Sculpture Today1 review
Judith Collins

Phaidon Press Inc., 2007

A Big Big Book
This is a beautiful book. It is more than I expected and a pleasure to own.

Passages in Modern Sculpture1 review
Rosalind E. Krauss

The MIT Press, 1981

An impressive achievement
This is Krauss's first book, and the one I like best. Her history of modern sculpture from Rodin to Robert Smithson is grounded in a sophisticated theoretical perspective, but it's not collapsing under the weight of theory like many later Krauss's texts. Her theoretical framework in this early book is phenomenological -- she made a transition to structuralist and poststructuralist theories ...

Sculpture: Principles and Practice7 reviews
Louis Slobodkin

Dover Publications, 1973

Great general guide
I agree with the comment below - this is a beginner's book. More power to it. It was written by someone who has taught as well as practiced & focuses on the sculpting process rather than on artistic technique. Some of the mediums he covers (casting stone, glue molds) have advanced in ease of use since this book was written, but this guide has stood the test of time.

Modern Sculpture: A Concise History (World of Art)2 reviews
Herbert Read

Thames & Hudson, 1985

modern thinking without fuss
Modern Sculpture takes us through the thoughts and ideas that finnished a stagnated era and gave birth to true creativity. It is written in a clear, very understandable way... without loosing its depth of insight. Beautifully presented and with a magnificent choice of sculptures.... fantastic reading!!!!

Encyclopedia of Sculpture Techniques2 reviews
John Mills

Batsford, 2005

Excellent Sculpture Resource
Clearly describes a wide range of sculptural terms, techniques and materials. Enteries are concise yet are often in-depth providing a clear understanding of complex or obscure subjects in this field of art. For the non-art school sculptor (like myself) or the new art student, it is invaluable reference book. Well-written with a personal and occassionally witty voice, I found it easy to read it ...

Conversations on Sculpture (Perspectives on Contemporary Sculpture)

Oakland Museum of California, 2007

A unique collection of interviews with contemporary sculptors drawn from the 25-year history of Sculpture magazine, Conversations on Sculpture offers a valuable overview of three-dimensional art at the end of the twentieth century and the beginning of the twenty-first century. The 43 interviews in Conversations on Sculpture capture the wide-ranging possibilities that characterize contemporary sculpture. The book includes an introduction by ...

Painting and Sculpture in Europe, 1880-1940 : 6th Edition2 reviews
George Heard Hamilton

Yale University Press, 1989

Looking for a nice overview?
If one reads this book in hopes of getting a fairly complete overview of art of the early Twentieth Century, they will not be disappointed. However, if one is looking for something more in depth, with various examples of an artists oevure, then perhaps they should keep looking. One of this book's greatest virtues as an overview is that it does not assume a great deal of knowledge of art on ...

The Figure in Clay: Contemporary Sculpting Techniques by Master Artists (A Lark Ceramics Book)15 reviews
Lark Books

Lark Books, 2005

Fantastic Book!
I've been wanting to get into ceramics for a while and this book was just the thing to get my creative juices flowing. It has many (500 actually) beautiful pieces to admire, with such a wide selection of styles. I love that it has a both beautiful and grotesque figures revealing so many artistic view points. It's definitely not a "how to" book, with just enough info to get a basic idea of how ...

The Language of Sculpture, With 155 Illustrations1 review
William Tucker

Thames & Hudson, 1985

Only if you want a textbook
This probably is a great textbook, at least it certainly reads like one. I was more interested in getting inspired about sculpture and this was too stilted toward very abstract sculpture for my taste.

Sculpture (Midi Series)2 reviews
Georges Duby

Taschen, 2006

Phenomenal
I greatly enjoy classical and Renaissance sculpture, and I picked this set of books up on a whim - they are two handsome, thick, and heavy paperback volumes collected in a sturdy slipcase - and have been wildly impressed. This was a very inexpensive set of books, and I would normally expect to pay upwards of $75 or so for such a set as this, but it is beautifully produced, covering, over the two ...

Gothic: Architecture - Sculpture - Painting8 reviews

h. f. ullmann, 2008

THE BEST CATHEDRAL BOOK EVER
This is the most spectacular book for you if you like lots of HUGE clear photos of TONS of gothic cathedrals. There are MANY pages of history and other information about the making and restoring of the cathedrals. A MUST HAVE for any gothic-history lover.

Terracotta: The Technique of Fired Clay Sculpture7 reviews
Bruno Lucchesi, Margit Malmstrom

Watson-Guptill, 1996

Great Reference
I'm a student working in wax, but the most important concepts in this book are definitely cross media; it was a good buy. I mainly use the book as a reference tool and posing guide -- it is a great problem solver. There can't be many issues in posing or proportioning that a beginner won't find help for somewhere in this book. Ms. Malmstrom has such a talent for photographing sculpture that you ...

Direct Stone Sculpture4 reviews
Milt Liebson

Schiffer Publishing, 2000

Excellent book on direct stone sculpture
This book has aroused in me a great deal of enthuiasm for the process of shaping stone and the creation of art forms out of stone. Liebson is an authority on the subject and he writes extremely well. Manufacturers and suppliers of tools and stone are listed in an index. A list of recommended tools is provided as well as a fairly comprehensive description of how to best utilize these tools. The ...

Sculpture in the Age of Doubt (Aesthetics Today)6 reviews
Thomas McEvilley

Allworth Press, 1999

A unique work
For sculptors there is simply no other work like this: a summary of 20th Century philosophy told through the sculpture of our time. It is a unique vehicle that someone should have thought of long before. Just the title alone is almost all we need to know about the social background against which we must devise the reflections of our times. It is a time of doubt, lacking a master narrative ...

Chinese Sculpture
Angela Falco Howard, Song Li, ...

Yale University Press, 2003

Sculpture is becoming known as one of China’s great arts. Neolithic figurines, rows upon rows of underground terra-cotta statues, exquisite bronzes, Buddhas carved in cave walls—all these are part of a vast sculptural heritage. This gorgeous book, written by a team of eminent international scholars, is the first to offer a comprehensive history of Chinese sculpture. Spanning some seven thousand years, Chinese Sculpture explores a ...
