Race and Intelligence: Separating Science From Myth
1 review
Lawrence Erlbaum

Race and Intelligence
This is a great book. It takes readers from the origin of humanity to how far it has come including beliefs or myths created as populations drifted away from Africa. It's also a great analysis of how perception changes as we go from one environment to another.

Still letting everything sink in
I've been in therapy for 4 years and it takes a long time to come to terms with things you never knew existed in your life until now. My whole life I've been pretty much either sad or depressed. Had overwhelming feelings of inferiority and never feeling loved. Except I could never identify the feelings or understand where they were coming from. My therapist recommended this book, telling me ...

What do Michael Milken and Martha Stewart have in common? (Answer: Both became public scapegoats for an outrageous era of greed and excess.) Jack Welch and Jim Fisk? Critical Thinking in Psychology: Separating Sense from Nonsense

John Ruscio
Wadsworth Publishing
, 2005
Great teaching tool
This book is required reading for my general psychology students. Complex issues in behavioral science are presented in a clear, almost conversational manner, through discussion of apt examples like MPD and false memories, Clever Hans, crop circles, claims of alien abductions, conspiracy theories, and homeopathic medicine. The chapters are short (10-15 pgs.) and can be related to the intro psych ...
Tall Tales about the Mind and Brain: Separating Fact from Fiction

Does listening to Mozart make us more intelligent? Is there such a thing as a gay gene? Does the size of the brain matter? Does the moon influence our behaviour? Can we communicate with the dead? Can graphology tell us anything about a person's character? Is the human brain clonable? What role do dreams have in cognition? Can mind conquer matter and diseases? Are out-of-body experiences possible? Can we trust our intuitions? To some, the ...

Inside Ballet Technique: Separating Anatomical Fact from Fiction in the Ballet Class

Valerie Grieg

, 1994
One of the best ballet books ever written!
Ballet is being taught incorrectly all over the world today except for in a few great institutions such as the Royal Ballet School. Valerie Grieg has brought to light the lies that fill so many ballet classrooms today. She explains the technique of ballet simply and clearly and why and how it works. As a student of ballet, I have been incredibly fortunate to have had a teacher who cares about ...
The Historical Jesus and the Mythical Christ: Separating Fact from Fiction

Gerald Massey

Excellent Egyptian review
Massey is always very adamant and almost ruthless in approach. That is NOT why I think this is an excellent book, though. Using his immense skill as an Egyptologist, Massey shows us incredible links to the Jesus story. Like other books I have read on paganism, the linkage is unignorable. One must read this to gain a perspective on the links between ancient religions and Christianity.
Reconceiving Women: Separating Motherhood from Female Identity

Great! Technical and In-depth
This is another great book that supports women who choose to not have children. The author theorizes that women can fall into one of three catagories (or a combination thereof): Traditional, Transitional, and Transformative. Pyschological theories abound and there are personal stories about real women. There's a little too much Freud for my taste - but it does help the reader get the full ...

Fuel to fight the English Only people
I worked for Dr. Tse years ago, as a graduate assistant, so I'm a little biased. The first three chapters of this book are the best. Tse presents data to prove that immigrants, in fact, are learning English. Bilingual education doesn't mean that English has to be lost. Nor does it mean that the home language must be abandoned. It is a quick read, but still packed with information. We ...

useful advice
The book is directed at social workers and therapists who have to deal with children from the circumstances given in the title. Typically, the children are in primary school. Advice is proferred on helping the children cope with their family environments. Here, there is an emphasis that at least the school environment is a safe one, with friendly teachers and therapists. One type of advice ...
Separating School & State: How to Liberate America's Families

Sheldon Richman
Future of Freedom Foundation
, 1994
Good points about getting government out of education
This is a very well written book about why government should not be involved in educating children. One of the author's main points is that the public school system is failing because it is based on a socialist model. The author points out that most everyone agrees that the public school system is not performing well and it is very, very broken. Sheldon Richman argues that people who try to ...
Andreas Libavius and the Transformation of Alchemy: Separating Chemical Cultures with Polemical Fires
Bruce T. Moran
Science History Publications/USA
, 2007
What lots of people called chymia in the early seventeenth century was a subject that the physician, alchemist, and schoolteacher Andreas Libavius believed needed sorting out. He called it an art without an art. To establish what sort of thing chymia was would require rebuilding its definitions from the theoretical and practical ground up while cutting back the forest of obscure language and private meaning in which it existed. Libavius took ...

Ron Rhodes

, 2006
A Basic Primer for the Christian Faith
With so many views, so many books and so many years of history, it can be overwhelming to find a great "primer" on the Christian faith. Chirstians and non-Christians alike will benefit from this short but jam-packed work by Ron Rhodes, a very gifted writer and educator. In just 15 chapters, Rhodes tackles the big questions and sheds light on a number of teachings, traditions, and "in-house" ...
Separating Power: Essays on the Founding Period
Gerhard Casper
Harvard University Press
, 1997
The separation of powers along functional lines--legislative, executive, and judicial--has been a core concept of American constitutionalism ever since the Revolution. As noted constitutional law scholar Gerhard Casper points out in this collection of essays, barren assertions of the importance of keeping the powers separate do not capture the complexity of the task when it is seen as separating power flowing from a single source--the people. ...

A Fantastic Text for Undergraduate Experimental Psychology
I am very pleased to recommend Leavitt's book as an undergraduate text in Experimental Psychology. This text does a great job of covering the main topics in Experimental Psychology as well as providing the framework for scientific development. I was especially pleased by the author's ability to convey the sense of excitement and discovery that research instills while placing a strong emphasis ...
Separating Church and State: ROGER WILLIAMS AND RELIGIOUS LIBERTY
1 review
Timothy L. Hall
University of Illinois Press
, 1997
Fresh insights to understanding the First Amendment
Even though I am a history student, I believe this book would be very intriguing to anyone who wants to understand the ideological formation of separation of church and state. Hall argues that First Amendment theory owes just as much to dissenting Protestantism and evangelical passion, as it does to Enlightenment skepticism. Hall contends that an over zealous reliance on Jefferson and Madison ...
Angels Among Us: Separating Fact from Fiction
Ron Rhodes
Harvest House Publishers
, 2008
With stories of angelic encounters all around us, Reasoning from the Scriptures Ministries president Ron Rhodes delves into the biblical truth about these heavenly beings. Some current reports are so utterly remarkable they have captured widespread attention. Curiously, however, many of these seemingly celestial visitors have little in common with the angels of the Bible. Angels are very much involved in our lives today?of that we can be ...
