Or Hadash: A Commentary on Siddur Sim Shalom for Shabbat and Festivals7 reviews
Reuven Hammer

Rabbinical Assembly, 2005

Guide for those who want to know
I feel like EZ Reader on Sesame Street so much to read and so little time to read it all. Rabbi Hammer has again done a real service to Conservative Judaism by explaining the prayer book in a way that is interesting, informative and very clearly written. My only regret is that I bought the paper back copy and it is small and hard to read. Get the full size copy friends.

A joy to simply page through
Shalom Y'all: Images Of Jewish Life In The American South is a unique treasure trove of black-and-white images by professional photographer Bill Aron in which he expertly capturing images of Jewish daily life, culture, and tradition in America's southern states. Shalom: The Bible's Word for Salvation, Justice, and Peace1 review
Perry B. Yoder

Evangel Publishing House, 1998

Helpful, but oversimplified
Yoder provides a helpful addition to work on Biblical peace studies by underscoring the importance of the concept of Shalom throughout the Old and New Testaments. Unfortunately, his approach suffers from an over reliance on Marxist ideology and he has the tendency to oversimplify complex topics such as substitutionary atonement and New Testament views of the state. As a result, some of his ...

Beware of God: Stories17 reviews
Shalom Auslander

Simon & Schuster, 2006

Sharp wit and irreverent perspective.
I read pratically the entire book in one sitting; it's hard to put down. These short, well-crafted stories are filled with memorable moments and lines, as well as a sincere and irreverent take on the whole god 'issue'. As a non-Jew, some (many, actually) references bypassed me completely, yet there was plenty more of the book to enjoy. This is a book that you'll find yourself rereading several ...

Siddur Sim Shalom : a prayerbook for Shabbat, festivals, and weekdays5 reviews

Rabbinical Assembly, 1985

Tradition Jewish prayerbookfor the 20th century Jew.
"Siddur Sim Shalom" is a traditional Jewish prayerbook, which contains prayers for weekdays, Shabbat, and the festivals. It also contains services for other events such as Birkat HaMazon (Grace after meals). This is the official Siddur of the Conservative movement. The text is nearly the same as that of Orthodox siddurim, but the references to the Temple and animal sacrifices have been ...

Foreskin's Lament: A Memoir50 reviews
Shalom Auslander

Riverhead Hardcover, 2007

Very Funny
Auslander is incredibly funny in his "memoir". I originally came across him in a GQ article and had to read his other material. He provided some great points about God and "theological Abuse" in this book. His negative & nonstop thoughts are both hilarious and very universal. He is in constant fear of an angry God and his idiotic rambles and stupid stunts are only fodder for a great story.

Shabbat Shalom
Great recipes that add some diversity to the shabbat. Provides some totally new but festive meals to my table. I highly recommend this book for an addition to your cookbook library.

Siddur Sim Shalom for Shabbat and Festivals2 reviews

Rabbinical Assembly, 1998

Shows that tradition and innovation are compatible.
This is a new edition of "Sim Shalmom", one of the official prayerbooks for Conservative Judaism. This new edition is only for Shabbat and festivals (it has no weekday services.) Many of the translations of prayers are nearly identical to the original 1985 edition, but there have been a number of changes. This siddur uses gender-sensitive translations of the names of God, and presents a more ...

Foreskin's Lament
Shalom Auslander

Riverhead Trade, 2008

A New York Times Notable Book, and a ?chaotic, laugh riot?( San Francisco Chronicle ) of a memoir? first time in trade paperback. Shalom Auslander was raised with a terrified respect for God. Even as he grew up and was estranged from his community, his religion and its traditions, he could not find the path to a life where he didn?t struggle daily with the fear of God?s formidable wrath. Foreskin?s Lament reveals Auslander?s ?painfully, ...

Shalom, Salaam, Peace2 reviews
Howard I. Bogot

Central Conference of American Rabbis, 2000

Shalom, Salaam, Peace
I really goofed. I thought I was buying the adult edition of this book, but when it arrived I discovered it was a children's book. I glanced at it and then put it aside for my granddauger age 11. From the glance my thought was that we need more of this type thought going out - just because we think differently we are all the same and we need to seek this sameness if we are to have peace in the ...

Good readable history of Kabbalistis "Kavanahs"
Pinchas Giller has created a "scholarly" but altogether readable and accesible account of a group of Sephardic Jews centerd in Israel and how they value and use traditional Kavanot in their structued prayerlife.Kavanot ,roughly translated as intentions, are commonly emphasized in Hassidic Judaism and refer to the the concentration and heartfelt feeling with which one prays or performs mitzvot ...

The Last Trial: On the Legends and Lore of the Command to Abraham to Offer Isaac As a Sacrifice : The Akedah ...3 reviews
Shalom Spiegel

Jewish Lights Publishing, 1993

Fascinating study of the Akedah (Binding of Isaac)
In this fascinating book, Spiegel traces rabbinic interpretations of the Akedah (the Binding of Isaac) from the earliest sources through the Middle Ages. He begins at the end, with the remarkable fact that during the Middle Ages, European Jews looked to Isaac as a martyr, the prototypical sacrifice and an inspiration to those Jews who killed themselves rather than convert to Christianity under ...
