Sir Cumference and the Sword in the Cone: A Math Adventure5 reviews
Cindy Neuschwander, Wayne Geehan

Charlesbridge Publishing, 2003

Fun escapades teach geometry painlessly!
Some years ago, we stumbled upon these books at the library. They were an instant hit - every single one in the Sir Cumference series! We check out lots of books but this one the children remembered. In fact, we hadn't checked these out for a couple of years when one son started a new geometry section in math and asked me to get these again so he could review! My preschooler thinks of these as ...

Sir Cumference and the First Round Table (A Math Adventure)20 reviews
Cindy Neuschwander, Wayne Geehan

Charlesbridge Publishing, 1999

Led to instant recall of proper geometric terms
My kids (9 and 6) , who are homeschooled, loved this story and it resulted in them being able to instantly recall the proper names of geometric elements and classes (e.g., radius, circumference, obtuse, acute). This is probably due to the clever visual and contextual associations provided. We bought another book in the series right afterward with the same results. Plan to get them all.

Great for students
I thought this would be a great way to introduce this concept to my students. It worked and they really enjoyed the book.

Sir Cumference and the Isle of Immeter (Math Adventures)6 reviews
Cindy Neuschwander

Charlesbridge Publishing, 2006

Medieval Math Adventure
Back in the days of Camelot, people knew geometry, but they learned it in adventures instead of textbooks. Per of Ameter played a game created by the Countess Areana in which they figured the outside edges and inner pieces of shapes made with the same size squares. Their skill at this game allowed them to solve several mysteries on the Isle of Immeter through a few escapes, as the island was ...

Sir Gawain and the Green Knight (A New Verse Translation)11 reviews
Simon Armitage

W. W. Norton & Company, 2008

A brilliant translation of a favorite medieval romance!
I fell in love with this romance in college. I've read a few translations of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, in poetry and verse, and Armitage's is, hands down, the best. A former classmate from NYU called to recommend the text, reading passages aloud to me over the phone. This year I used the book with high school seniors, who loved it. Armitage employs the alliterative verse and bob and wheel ...

Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Pearl, Sir Orfeo23 reviews
J.R.R. Tolkien

Del Rey, 1988

Who cares about Middle English?
For anyone who cares about the subject and yet is too lazy to read the original it is always a joy to read Tolkien, a master of English. The story is not fantasy, which many mistakenly look for in Tolkien, but a classic of middle English literature. If you get hooked on this genre there are many other stories, both long and short, available, and the original language is not so different from our ...

Sir Cumference and the Dragon of Pi (A Math Adventure)15 reviews
Cindy Neuschwander; Wayne Geehan

We love this series!
A great resource for homeschoolers or parents of high ability kids who need a different approach - My children (8 and 4 yr.) love every story in this series. Bravo to Cindy Newschwander - Creative, engaging, problem solving, and Dragons! What more does a young math student need? We own the entire Sir Cumference series and revisit them regularly as the concepts take root in our daily lives. ...

Sir Fartsalot Hunts the Booger12 reviews
Kevin Bolger

Razorbill, 2009

Cool book w/ questionable title
I homeschool my 8 yr old son and was a little worried about him reading this book. We read it together and were both quite sad when it was over. I would recommend this book to any boy (or girl) with a fun and vivid imagination. Pictures are really good too. We can't wait for the next Bolger book!??

Coming Prince10 reviews
Sir Robert Anderson

Kregel Publications,U.S., 1974

Still a great book these 100 years later!
Sir Robert Anderson (1841-1918) was a trained solicitor and intelligence officer who became Assistant Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police and Chief of the Criminal Investigation Department (Scotland Yard) during the Ripper Scare. He was widely credited with bringing London's notorious crime under control. However, Sir Robert was also a committed Christian. This fascinating book is the ...

Wake Up, Sir!: A Novel47 reviews
Jonathan Ames

Scribner, 2005

Single-handedly restores my faith in the publishing industry
After so many years of reading, this is the first book EVER to make me burst out laughing on ALMOST EVERY PAGE. How does Ames do it? He is brilliant! The idea of bringing a butler to a writer's colony? One who is privy to all one's "crushes" and envies and insecurities? It's just brilliant. This book was not over-hyped. Why is this man not more famous?

The Bride of Lammermoor (Oxford World's Classics)9 reviews
Sir Walter Scott

Oxford University Press, USA, 2009

A classic that remains interesting in the present, while becoming more interesting as a historical piece.
By the end of this novel, I was leaving late for things because I had trouble putting it down, even though I knew how it ended. I cannot say if it is too predictable or not: being a classic people are always giving away the plot, and even Scott did that in his introduction, Even if he hadn't, it was adapted into an opera, which was discussed on a program I saw recently. If you have managed ...

Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (Wordsworth Classics) (Wordsworth Collection)56 reviews
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

Wordsworth Editions Ltd, 1993

Great Britian's Nineteenth Century History
English history is served up along with the amazing mystery stories. I enjoy the pictures of daily life...the maid bringing in lunch to Holmes on a pre-arranged schedule, passing the street vendors and beggars, imagining the opium den frequented by addicts, vivid descriptions of period clothing, transportation and commerce slipped seamlessly into the tales. I read this often to refresh the ...

Sir Thursday (Keys to the Kingdom, Book 4)35 reviews
Garth Nix

Scholastic Paperbacks, 2007

Fun for young and "old"
Even though the "Keys To The Kingdom" series is written for young people I have been thoroughly enjoying them (I'm in my late 40s). They have a lot of detail, but not too much. Once I start reading one I have a hard time putting it down for anything! If you LIKE Sci Fi and DON'T like swearing and other so called "adult themes" I think you will love this series of books by Garth Nix.

Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Patience, Pearl: Verse Translations3 reviews

W.W. Norton & Co., 2001

Excellent translation
This is a great translation of one of the finest poems ever written in the English (well, middle English) language. The poem, in its original form, is very difficult to read, and Borroff's translation makes it not only easy but also very enjoyable to read. This poem originally was very alliterative, and Borroff has preserved much of that. Sir Gawain is one of the greatest of the Arthurian ...

The Ballad of Sir Dinadan (The Squire's Tales)9 reviews
Gerald Morris

Sandpiper, 2008

We laughed, we cried, we fought over who got to read it first!
After reading one book by author Gerald Morris, we were addicted! Now my husband (43), my son (12), and myself (37) are fighting over every book in the Squire's Tales series that we can get our hands on! We bought this book because we heard it was "good literature." We had no idea HOW good until we read it. It is clever, witty, sarcastic, adventurous, and inspirational! My husband laughed so ...

David Timson reads Sherlock Holmes Audiobooks
This review refers to the Complete Sherlock Holmes Audiobook Collection from Naxos Audiobooks read by David Timson. I cannot say enough good things about this collection! This is literally the best audiobook collection I have ever listened to and COMPLETELY work the money! Timson is an excellent reader. His voice turns Holmes, Watson and the minor characters into real people. Each story ...
