wow!
This book was recommended to me by a friend. I think this is one of the most honest and perceptive books I've ever read about coming of emotional maturity and about finding peace and meaning within. It is written in such uncomplicated way about the most profound emotions and complex feelings that will resonate with most. I couldn't recommend this book highly enough. Very good!

Bit dicky; but comfortable
In The Hero, which was originally published in 1901, Somerset Maugham tells the story of Captain James Parsons, who comes home to Little Primpton a wounded hero. He's been away for five years, first at Sandhurst and then in India and South Africa. During that time he has not seen his parents--his "people," as Maugham consistently refers to them--nor his fiancé, Mary Clibborn, to whom he was ...

A Story Doesn't Have to Change the World
I picked up this volume of stories because I'd heard that W Somerset Maugham was the true master of the short story form. I've read a lot of contemporary writers so I wanted to compare. I learned a lot from these stories. The first thing I learned was subtlety. These stories weren't filled with action sequences or grand plots, but instead they were filled with intent and slow moving ...

"Be happy, happy, happy"
Life's too short, as we learn in Somerset Maugham, to live it compromised by ugly feeling or jealousy, and it's also too short to read all of his stories of the South Seas collected in this Volume 4 of his Collected Short Stories. (Apparently through some quirk of Amazon, reviews of any of the four volumes of his collected are given here under Volume 4, and probably under each volume too. Oh ...

Human character development and spitual growth
This is a superb book, dealing with multiple themes around human relationships, character development, distinguishing love and infatuation, the transcendental experience, and the meaning of existence. That sounds like a lot but this small book covers a lot of ground. Through a wide array of characters, Maugham explores the nature of human relationships. There a parental relationships where ...

Preview Of What Was To Come
Maugham's very first published work has many of the elements that would be evident in his later works and that set him apart as one of the truly accomplished men of letters of his era. Lisa Of Lambeth is set in a poor working district of South London where Maugham practiced medicine as a younger man and demonstrates the remarkable powers of observation that were crucial to his later success. The ...

Gems from a Master
This quasi-journal of Maugham's thoughts, travels, philosophies and bits of literature is facinating on several levels. For an avid Maugham fan, you can see the germination of the ideas and the travels that became his novels. The charming, brilliant and matter-of-fact way in which Maugham says startling things about life will have you underlining passages throughout the work.

excellent study of human nature and choices
At first I thought this book was not going to be as great as Of Human Bondage which I love, but as I read on, the significance of the message and the poignancy of this book became so pronounced. In fact, it is amazing how the author managed to convey such heavy issues in this short book, and to incorporate literary weight as well as underlying dark humor. He is a master researcher and observer ...

Maugham Does It Again!
After having read `The Moon and Sixpence,' my faith in Somerset's writing as intelligent writing for the masses, remains unshaken. The pleasing fluidity that is a salient characteristic of his prose is omnipresent here as well, making this as fast a read as one of John Grisham's earlier works. Somerset is one of those writers who could expound on fluff and yet make a charming discourse out of it. ...
Collected Short Stories: Volume 3 (Penguin Twentieth-Century Classics)
W. Somerset Maugham
Penguin Classics
, 1993
The third volume of Somerset Maugham's Collected Short Stories, introduced by the author, contains the celebrated series about Ashenden, a secret service agent in World War I. Based on Maugham's own experiences with the British Intelligence service in Switzerland, the stories are vignettes in which he dramatises both the romance and absurdity of espionage as well as its ruthlessness and brutality. Accountable only to 'R', Ashenden travels all ...

Any Maughamophile will relish it
His short stories whetted my appetite for good reading as I was learning the subtle nuances of English language as an adolescent in 1970s. Like healthy food healthy books also need some effort at resisting junk while cultivation of a taste is ongoing in one's reading adolescence. English was only a second language for me after Oriya those days. One of my favorites is "Bookbag", where a British ...

Spell-binding
The Magician is an early work of the still young(ish) Maugham. A compulsive attraction for a person unworthy of it stands between its protagonist and happiness: it shares a similar subject with works such as The Painted Veil, Theatre, and of course Of Human Bondage. But Maugham seems to have been still grappling with the implications of this interesting premise, and while in later works its ...

Just The Best!
I have read this book many times over the years and it's different every time. Is amazing how one writer can get all those human emotions and write about them, one can actually feel what the characters feel and get involved into their lives. A book that is worth reading more than once...
