A great introduction to Spain
While visiting Spain with my wife we bought this book in Seville. I enjoyed every part of it especially the end of each chapter which holds a list of the monuments relevant to the history of that chapter. I took it on a trip to Spain with my wife and it made the trip magical. This book reviews the history of Spain from the Romans to nowadays. In his witty account, the author goes on to reveal ...

The Bible for Spain-Lovers
Tremlett incorporates personal anecdotes and experiences into each delightfully informative chapter to the extent that the writing is never dull or dry. As a Spanish-American trying to get in touch with his roots, this book, essential for those who have fallen for Spain, made me even prouder to call Spain my fatherland.

Great book
I bought this book, read it, planned along their recommendation. Had a great grip to Spain. I love the idea that a map of Madrid & Barcelona is included, it was very helpful. We walked around a lot for sight-seeing, without the map, won't be as convinent.

Best guide for outside the major cities
My husband and I just got back from a 2-week trip to Spain where we covered about 1000 miles by car. This was the guide that we depended on when we traveled through the Pyrenees, Rioja and Basque regions. The other guidebooks have maybe one or two sentences on the picturesque little medieval towns that we passed through, where this one had recommendations for meals and places to stay off the ...

A great introduction to the history of a great nation
I came to this volume as part of a project to further my education about Islam and its relationship with the rest of the world, which had led me to an interest in the Golden Age of ha Sefarad, and to inform myself further about Judaism, about which I have had too little information to understand its relationship with the world at all. This book serves both purposes beautifully. While serious in ...

Bernal Diaz del Castillo

Great Eyewitness account
Diaz was one of the soldiers who accompanied Cortez to invade the Aztec Empire. His account is one of the best we have of the whole affair. It is not written with much bias and was written to discount historical myths after the invasion had taken place. It is very analytical at times and his analysis of what happened is given added authority since he was present at the events. If you want to ...

A justly celebrated historical classic
Over the years I have managed to read a fairly large number of historical works dedicated to surveying particular periods of history, but I have rarely found one that managed to combine learning with readability as well as this one. Although a historian, Elliott must of necessity tell a story, and that is how Spain went from being a relatively unimportant afterthought on the tip of Europe to ...

Francisco Franco is still dead....
le for Spain: The Spanish Civil War 1936-1939 by Antony Beevor is a much better book than the first full length book that I read on the Spanish Civil War--The Spanish Republic and the Civil War, 1931-1939 by Gabriel Jackson. Beevor is much more clear in his explanations and much more thorough in his description of the actual war. In defense of Jackson, he spent much of his book examining the ...

Interesting and easy to read history
If you are an American, your touchstone of European history is always England. For much of the world, Spain is the "old country". This book made me see Spain in the way I see England. I now have a better feel for the land and its people. A good popular history.
Beggars in Spain

Smart science fiction, sometimes dense but ultimately worth the work
In total, "Beggars in Spain" is that kind of intellectual science fiction that you must consume slowly, if you don't want to choke. This is not a "rip-roaring good yarn;" it's a thoughtful, complex exploration of some essential questions of human nature and society--specifically, the de facto entitlement of the favorably born; the envy of those who aren't. Who would imagine that such a deep ...

Fantastic travel guide
As expected from the Michelin Green Guides series, this one too is a wonderful travel companion. Accurate and up to date, covers all important milestones and goes past the shallow surface barely scratched by other travel guides. This Michelin Green Guides is the best available, if you're going to travel to Spain don't leave home without it.

Memorable, deep, and completely outstanding
This history book has several things going for it. First, it's eminently readable; the author is a skillful writer who keeps you thinking about the subject matter, not his own style. Second, the reader's interest is doubled by the author's constant interweaving of the development of Spanish character into the history. Thirdly, the author always attempts explanations of the deeper historical ...

Riveting, accurate and succinct
For all students of Islam, Richard Fletcher's 175 pages of text are critical reading that dispel the myths wide of a kind, gentle "golden age" of Andalusian Islam. Many accounts exist from Islamic conquerors and subjugated Christians, but only three important contemporary reports meet scientific tests---a "single but crucial administrative document from the Islamic side," "a small amount of ...

An invaluable tool for travel in Spain
Having Rick Steves' Spain book in my bag on our recent trip was like having a good friend whisper tips and suggestions into our ears everywhere we went. His advice was specific and trustworty. We went off the beaten-path quite a bit on our own to places we wouldn't otherwise have dared to visit, but we did so with confidence because Rick never steered us wrong. Honestly, the only bad move we ...

Henry Kamen

Good history with an important Caveat
The caveat is that the Spanish Empire was in many ways not Spain's. Empire reminds us that many of those working, and fighting, for Spain were non-Spaniards. This is repeated throughout the book, for the most part to good effect. Empire is a truly academic work, in the sense that it presents us with the dark side of the Empire, without pretending that Spain of five centuries ago should be ...
