Spreading the Word: Language and Dialect in America
John McWhorter
Heinemann

McWhorter's book is a very well-written, entertaining look at language. . . . Teachers willing to spend just a couple hours with the book will find a great deal of information important to their work. - English Journal The idea that there is one "best" English is so intuitively plausible and so relentlessly inculcated in us that it is only natural to attempt to uphold this "Standard" among our students. Our error is in thinking that anything ...

Really good once you get past the earlier years
I really enjoyed this book once I got past Diana's earlier years. Which unfortuately make her sound pompous and arrogant, snobby and pretentious and actually rather bratty and in places nasty. This is unfortunate because if you can get past this bit and onto where she started flying. It is great. It is almost like it is written by a different person. And the accounts of her life learning to ...

Very unpredictable and intense
This was another great story that would make a great movie, suspense thriller! It was very exciting and not the same old story line, but new and inovating. When reading the book, you didn't know what was going to come next and couldn't predict the ending. It was an attention grabber that kept you reading. I am having second thoughts about camping in my trailer in the woods.

Real Life Experiences?
The first couple chapters were full of information that did not make sense. After Chapter Two the author does a great job showing the big picture. I couldn't help but chuckle during company meetings after reading this book. The real life experiences described in the book are exactly what my workforce reactions are to everyday situations. This book has been key to crossing the divide between ...

Parallel btwn govt & early post office are remarkable
This book gives an inside view of how US government and indeed, the nation's first nationwide corporate entity, struggled with the combined pressures of politics & business 200 years ago. The problems USPS managers faced were remarkably "modern" as were the solutions remarkably "modern." Since I work with an agency that is similar in many respects to USPS, it was fascinating to see them ...
