New Spring: The Novel (Wheel of Time)339 reviews
Robert Jordan

Tor Fantasy, 2005

New Spring breathes new life to an old story
In reviewing this book first let me say that I have read the entire Wheel of Time Series to date. I have grown tired of the convoluted and seemingly neverending storyline. At some point in a saga, it's time to have an ending. So, at book 10, I'd already given up on reading any further in this series, my wife purchased Book 11 for me to read, but I digress... In New Spring, The storytelling is ...

Silent Spring134 reviews
Rachel Carson

Mariner Books, 2002

A Classic Read
Joni Mitchell perhaps most aptly summarizes the driving idea of Silent Spring in her song "Big Yellow Taxi": "Hey farmer farmer / Put away that DDT now / Give me spots on my apples / But leave me the birds and the bees. Please!" While both the book and the song are a bit outdated in the United States as DDT was banned in 1972, it's still an interesting analysis of insecticides/herbicides, ...

Pro Spring34 reviews
Rob Harrop, Jan Machacek

Apress, 2005

Perfect Spring Book
1. Excellent Organization 2. Easy to Read - explanations are concise and easy to follow, even for Spring beginner like me. 3. Excellent Samples - the evolution of sample code is very clean, concise and easy to read. Even if the listing is 1 or 2 page long, you just need to take a glimpse to understand what's going on. Good presentation! 4. Detailed Coverage - can function as a reference ...

Julius Shulman: Palm Springs2 reviews
Michael Stern, Alan Hess

Rizzoli, 2008

Just to Lautner
Excellent new book on Palm Springs architecture. The final statement on John Lautner's contribution to Palm Springs architecture finally does just to this exeptional architect. For a book of this quality the price is obscenely low.

Spring in Action49 reviews
Craig Walls, Ryan Breidenbach

Manning Publications, 2007

The most helpful Spring book
I have a handful of Spring books and all but this one are more for reference than concepts. Between Spring online docs and Google, I don't use my Spring reference books. Spring In Action is the best book for learning about Spring. Topics like AOP, MVC and dependency injection are not ones you're likely to just read about and think "I've got it!". These are big concepts and require examples that ...

Once again, a very GOOD story
Just like the Mitford Series this book is relaxing and enjoyable. It moves in new directions with same tone and style as other Father Tim books. I am anxious for next release.

The Seven Wonders of Sassafras Springs14 reviews
Betty G. Birney

Aladdin, 2007

creative, beautiful story
I am a third and fourth grade teacher. The librarian in our school highly recommended this book. I read it aloud to my third grade class of boys, and they were thoroughly intrigued by the book. There are several vignettes throughout the book, and each of these wonderful depections is written with breathtaking imagination. The characters and the storyline are well built. I would recommend ...

Spring Awakening - Vocal Selections10 reviews

Hal Leonard, 2008

Worth its weight in Gold
This book is fantastic! It's not like alot of vocal selection books that just have the solo works, this had the multiple parts built into the staff to create the beautiful harmonies and chords that are affluent in the musical! Definately worth the wait! Reccomend it to anyone who knows the musical, or just wants to learn to sing such amazing music! I only wish they would have had the reprise in ...

Spring Awakening: A Play
Frank Wedekind

Faber & Faber, 2007

First performed in Germany in 1906, Frank Wedekind’s controversial play Spring Awakening closed after one night in New York in 1917 amid charges of obscenity and public outrage. For the better part of the twentieth century Wedekind’s intense body of work was largely unpublished and rarely performed. Yet the play’s subject matter—teenage desire, suicide, abortion, and homosexuality—is as explosive and important ...

Rites of Spring : The Great War and the Birth of the Modern Age26 reviews
Modris Eksteins

KEY PORTER BOOKS, 2002

Cubist Warfare
Professor Ecksteins' book is, on one level, a history that places the Great War in the context of the popular cultural zeitgeist that produced it. While other books have analyzed the outbreak of the war from the perspective of politicians and diplomats, Ecksteins portrays it as a popular cultural upheaval. In this way, this book distinguishes itself from other histories of the period. On a ...

Spring Snow41 reviews
Yukio Mishima

Vintage, 1990

Landscapes -- Interior and Exterior
In "Spring Snow," Yukio Mishima has chosen the perfect title for his novel. The narrative is as gentle and as beautiful as wet snow on spring blossoms, and indeed there is a poignant scene where two lovers have a tryst in a rickshaw under such conditions. It was my first foray into the world of Mishima -- indeed, of Japanese literature -- and will not be my last. The story of a young and ...

Hot Spring and Hot Pools of the Southwest: Jayson Loam's Original Guide2 reviews
Marjorie Gersh-Young

Aqua Thermal Access, 2007

a lot of fun searching for the hot springs
By using the GPS coordinate, we had a lot of fun searching the hot springs in the Mammoth Lakes area. The only reason I give it 4 stars is there is a wrong GPS coordinate (reading the direction eventually got me there). Great book.

Professional Java Development with the Spring Framework26 reviews
Rod Johnson, Juergen Hoeller, ...

Wrox, 2005

Can't really say
I lent it to a guy on my development team, and now I can't seem to get it back. He must like it. (!) One thing I really appreciated was the comparative tables showing benefits and tradeoffs of using the different web frameworks with Spring. The book does seem a bit shallow for the number of topics presented -- should have been a couple thousand pages to cover everything I'd like to know.

It's Spring2 reviews
Linda Glaser

Millbrook Press, 2002

Excellent book!
I love books about the seasons, and this is one of the best I have read to my children. The wording is perfect - full of everything fun for kids about the season, and the illustrations are beautiful. Also, at the end of the book is a list of activities to do in the springtime with kids. We have the fall book, too, and are anxiously awaiting the winter and summer books to be released.

Snow Falling in Spring: Coming of Age in China During the Cultural Revolution (Melanie Kroupa Books)2 reviews
Moying Li

Farrar, Straus and Giroux (BYR), 2008

a gem
A wonderful read. This marvelously crafted book tells of a young girl's growing up during the Chinese Cultural Revolution. The exquisitely gentle yet powerful prose conveys not only the pain and pathos of that turbulent period in modern China but also the characteristics which enable us to endure and overcome adversity. There are many special characters such as Ms. Li's grandmother Lao,Lao and ...

A False Spring18 reviews
Pat Jordan

Bison Books, 2005

HE PLAYED THE GAME
Those of us who are profesional sportswriters spend a lot of time in press boxes with other writers who criticize what they see on the field, but either never played the game or never played it well. "The Suitors of Spring" is brilliantly written by Pat Jordan, who did play the game. It also brings to mind some of the best sports books ever. "Ball Four's" Jim Bouton played the game. "North ...

Postcards from Palm Springs4 reviews
Robert Julian

Lulu.com, 2007

Will use as a tour book! ... and an entertaining memoir as well
We'll be leaving shortly for a long weekend break in Palm Springs, one week before the big influx of lesbians for the golf tournament. It won't be too hot (early April) to enjoy strolls around town, and we're looking forward to doing the standard touristy things recommended by the auto club in their tour book. The auto club's book doesn't do it for the gay traveler, especially one of a ...
