Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Unleashed11 reviews
Ray Rankins, Paul Bertucci, ...

Sams, 2006

Just simply a great reference for SQL Server 2005
Even for a beginner like me. This is a great book as a reference or if you learn by experimenting and need a book to look up things here and there. I'm not an expert with SQL Server but it really seems like this book is a must have if you're dealing with SQL Server setup, management, etc..

Sams Teach Yourself SQL in 10 Minutes (3rd Edition) (Sams Teach Yourself)137 reviews
Ben Forta

Sams, 2004

PERFECT! AWESOME! Need I say more?
When I went for a job interview a few months ago all I knew about SQL was that it had something to do with databases. When I informed the interviewer I didn't know SQL, the look on his face let me know I was doomed. So as soon as I left that interview I got online and purchased this book determined to learn as much as I can, in an inexpensive way, and quickly. Wow! This book turned out to be all ...

LINQ in Action23 reviews
Fabrice Marguerie, Steve Eichert, ...

Manning Publications, 2008

Very, very nice and good book
This is a very nicely written book. Clear explanations, concepts are introduced gradually and build on each other with no forward references, simple and to the point code samples, good and appropriate pace, and very easy to read and understand. I was actually amazed by this book. I read a couple of books/month, and this book reminded me a lot of the quality of classic CS books, which is so ...

MCTS Self-Paced Training Kit (Exam 70-431): Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Implementation and Maintenance ...37 reviews
Solid Quality Learning

Microsoft Press, 2006

Great Book, Great Author
I bought this book because I had the opportunity to take a training course by one of the co-authors, Mike Hotek. Mike is an awesome teacher as well as writer. This book had very clear practical examples ranging from how to create a table to replication and database mirroring. I found that if you want to learn the just-above-the-basics of SQL 2005, this book is for you. Even if you don't know ...

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services 200537 reviews
Brian Larson

McGraw-Hill Osborne Media, 2005

A great way to learn the basics
I just worked my way cover-to-cover and did every exercise. Sure, there are some errors in the book and sometimes it is not as clear as I would like and it does help to be a DBA but I think the book is rather above average in its accuracy. The book is not useful as a reference. But I highly recommend it as a great start. If you are not going to download the problems and do the exercises, then ...

Beginning PHP and MySQL: From Novice to Professional, Third Edition (Beginning from Novice to Professional)93 reviews
W. Jason Gilmore

Apress, 2008

This was my first PHP/MySQL book
I purchased this book because I needed to use PHP and MySQL for a project at work. I never had any exposure to either before reading this book. By using this book and the w3schools website I was able to successful build a meager database and have a fully functioning php front end. It was very pleasing to see the project come to fruition and I have this book to thank for that. I used it mainly ...

PHP 6 and MySQL 5 for Dynamic Web Sites: Visual QuickPro Guide130 reviews
Larry Ullman

Peachpit Press, 2007

Best for getting up to speed fast using PHP 6 and MySQL 5
I'll keep it brief since "Customer" nailed it with their review already, but wanted to say with this book and the free manuals on PHP and MySQL I was up to speed and developed my first dynamic web site in a matter of weeks, reading and learning part-time at night. I wanted to go a bit further than just basic PHP and MySQL as part of a current personal project; researching and learning about ...

Java Persistence with Hibernate46 reviews
Christian Bauer, Gavin King

Manning Publications, 2006

A Massive Book for a Magnificent Framework
Some of the reviews for this book are a little harsh. This is the most complete book on Hibernate on the market. It covers everything, and I mean everything. From mapping to annotations, to whatever, it's in here. The book is written by the makers of Hibernate, and you can find an answer to pretty much every question you'll ever have explained in extreme detail, and in a very, very ...

Access 2007: The Missing Manual14 reviews
Matthew MacDonald

Pogue Press, 2006

Excellent!
This book is perfect for the novice. It guides you to the key components for MS Access without all the "techie" language. It also points out informative tips and clues to improve your database. This is specific for 2007, which really does make a difference since the security features have changed dramatically. There is a website for the examples. It is easy to download. The book states you ...

High Performance MySQL: Optimization, Backups, Replication, and More23 reviews
Baron Schwartz, Peter Zaitsev, ...

O'Reilly Media, Inc., 2008

Self made DBA
A great overview of MySQL, with a cursory introduction to virtually every field a DBA will encounter over the years. The book is aimed at someone who has already used MySQL, but does not require in-depth knowledge - it's well written and should serve as a great starting point for further research. Jeremy covers: indexes, engines, query tricks, backup, security, and more. For a seasoned DBA, this ...

Head First SQL: Your Brain on SQL -- A Learner's Guide (Head First)28 reviews
Lynn Beighley

O'Reilly Media, Inc., 2007

Unorthodox & Effective Training Method
At first I was a little thrown off by all the images and quips (I guess I'm used to boring, dry guides). After a while I was actually drawn into the book and how it guided me through learning SQL. I must admit that I had a somewhat rudimentary understanding of SQL but after completing the book my queries a sharper & more complex. I do want to put it out there; this isn't really a reference ...

Microsoft SQL Server(TM) 2005 Administrator's Companion (Pro - Administrator's Companion)5 reviews
Edward Whalen, Victor Isakov, ...

Microsoft Press, 2006

Review for the RIGHT Edition
Looks like all the reviews for this book are for SQL 7.0. I have the SQL 2005 version of this book and I have to say it is VERY complete. It is not a rehash of online material, but in depth coverage of essential SQL technologies and system administration. If you want a programming guide, skip this book. If you want to know how SQL works, and what to do if it is broken (better yet, read this ...

MySQL Crash Course (Sams Teach Yourself in 10 Minutes)15 reviews
Ben Forta

Sams, 2005

a good start for mySQL
Great book to get you start into mysql. Very good examples and explanations. rather basic in some things, but overall it is worth the money. I got this book and O'Reilly's "MySQL cookbook". A good combination, that got me started with MySQL in no time. Mind you, I knew all the relational database stuff and sql queries already, but didn't know the specifics of MySQL. I was working with MS Access, ...

PHP and MySQL Web Development (3rd Edition) (Developer's Library)175 reviews
Luke Welling, Laura Thomson

Sams, 2005

The ONLY Book You Will Ever Need To Master PHP/MySQL
I cracked open this book knowing only basic HTML. About halfway through it, I was a website developer. By the end of the book, I was a website professional with highly sought after skills. This book is not only written well, but is written in a manner that kept my short-spanned attention all the way through with plenty of momentum. Possibly the only computer book I have ever read all the ...

MCITP Self-Paced Training Kit (Exams 70-431, 70-443, 70-444): Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Database ...19 reviews

Microsoft Press, 2006

Nice book for this hard exam
This book prepares you verry well for the exam. Its not a big book but its very concice and lets you practice most of the topics you read. The requirements to study for this book are to have a few virtual machines to setup up a local network with a server which has some server roles and few clients. Thats cool because in that way you practice like in the enterprise enviroment. The exercises are ...

SQL Cookbook (Cookbooks (O'Reilly))39 reviews
Anthony Molinaro

O'Reilly Media, Inc., 2005

As a reference
I found this book to be very complete. Providing solutions for multiple DBMSs was greately appreciated. I have been in I.T. for a long time and I have read many many books on all types of subjects. I often (too often) am disappointed with books I purchase. However, sometimes I am pleasantly surprised... this is one of those time. I create numerous queries using all types of tools. As such, I ...

Learning SQL (Learning)21 reviews
Alan Beaulieu

O'Reilly Media, Inc., 2005

Not for a true novice
I bought this book thinking I could learn SQL as a true novice. This book is not intended for a real beginner, but for developers/programmers that probably already know at least one language. For a real beginner's book see Forta's MYSQL Crash Course or Teach Yourself SQL. This book, Learning SQL, would probably be your next book.

Inside Microsoft SQL Server 2005: T-SQL Querying (Solid Quality Learning)29 reviews
Itzik Ben-Gan, Lubor Kollar, ...

Microsoft Press, 2006

An excellent contribution to the "Inside-SQL" series
This is the 2nd book of the 4 part "Inside-SQL" series, with each book I imagine, appealing to a different reader. Having a programming background, I enjoyed this book more than the first in the series ("The Storage Engine"), which on it's own is also an excellent book. As mentioned in other reviews, this book is definitely not for beginners. The authors assumes a basic level of SQL knowledge ...

Professional SQL Server 2005 Integration Services (Programmer to Programmer)31 reviews
Brian Knight, Allan Mitchell, ...

Wrox, 2006

Very informative!
So far this book is great for basics. It gives a great overview of all the options you have to create a SSIS package. I had previously purchased the expert version because I had DTS experience and realized SSIS was totally different. So I bought the professional version and it's filled in a lot of gaps. It's also got nice tutorials at the end of the chapters that help you to create a basic SSIS ...

Beginning SQL Server 2005 Administration4 reviews
Dan Wood, Chris Leiter, ...

Wrox, 2006

Just what I needed
I had not touched a DB box in quite a while, and I was recently handed a SQL 2005 box to manage. This book pretty much covered everything I needed. The writing style is laid back and readable, and they get right to the point, without going off on all sorts tangents. The chapter on Automating Administrative Tasks (Chapter 8) was pure gold. Good stuff.
