Shaping Things (Mediaworks Pamphlets)13 reviews
Bruce Sterling

The MIT Press, 2005

Setting the agenda..
If you're looking for a book on sustainable design, the intertwining of the informational and the material, and RFID, look no further. Sterling's account is more than a book for designers. Though some angles tend to originate from design-related topics, the implications and responsibilities pertaining to design cannot belong to a community of designers per se. That's a pretty self-evident ...

Freedom Train: The Story of Harriet Tubman22 reviews

Great Story!
A great historical story that captivates the imaginations and minds of the children I teach.

Rascal (PMC) (Puffin Modern Classics)69 reviews
Sterling North

Puffin, 2004

Great! Loved it :)
I absolutely enjoyed this book because it's descriptive and fun. The author, Sterling North, did an admirable job because when you read it, you feel like you're in the story yourself. It's easy to imagine peering from the neighbor's yard, watching Sterling sadly build a cage for his handsome raccoon, Rascal. I would recommend this book to everyone who likes animals, adventure, and real stories.

Sterling Biographies: The Wright Brothers: First in Flight
Tara Dixon-Engel, Mike Jackson

Sterling, 2007

At least as far back as the ancient myth of Icarus, humans longed to fly?but it wasn?t until December 17, 1903, on the windy dunes of Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, that the dream finally came true. And it was all thanks to Orville and Wilbur Wright, two former bicycle mechanics who built their first toy plane?a rubber-band powered rotary?when they were just children. Find out how the two brothers, working quietly and persistently, ultimately ...

Distraction63 reviews
Bruce Sterling

Spectra, 1999

Bruce Sterling's best
I'm not Bruce Sterling's biggest fan, but I am a fan, despite his glaring limitations as a writer. Let's get them out of the way up-front: Bruce Sterling cannot write convincing dialog to save his life. Bruce Sterling characters are, almost without exception down to the minor characters, hysterics with their emotional lives dialed up to 11; they emote with the enthusiasm of a 13-year-old's ...

Schismatrix Plus (Complete Shapers-Mechanists Universe)39 reviews
Bruce Sterling

Ace Trade, 1996

Sterling's Best
Since "Neuromancer" and the accompanying cyberpunk explosion, Sterling (and many others) has been unfairly relegated to Williams Gibson's shadow. Too bad, because while "Neuromancer" has dated (most near future stories do), "Schismatrix" seems to be getting better and better. "Shaper revolutionaries struggle against arisocratic Mechanists" is the dust jacket blurb, but this is a gross ...

The Caryatids17 reviews
Bruce Sterling

Del Rey, 2009

Don't listen to the naysayers, this book is awesome!
I am baffled at why The Caryatids has received so many negative reviews on here. I am in so much puzzlement over how people could honestly write these things that I wouldn't be surprised if a rival publishing house has paid people to pan the books of its competition. I suspect, however, that Bookmarks Magazine summed up the reason when they said that "Books of big ideas often polarize reviewers, ...

Sterling Biographies: Thomas Edison: The Man Who Lit Up the World
Martin Woodside

Sterling, 2007

The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time. That was Thomas Edison?s philosophy, and it led him to create the incandescent light bulb and illuminate the world with electricity. But that was just one of the many groundbreaking inventions Edison devised, many of which changed the shape of entertainment, industry, and everyday life. Meet the Wizard of Menlo Park, and see how he grew from a lonely, inquisitive boy who ...

Tomorrow Now: Envisioning the Next 50 Years5 reviews
Bruce Sterling

Random House Trade Paperbacks, 2003

Amazing!
Tomorrow Now is essentially a long and brilliant essay by Bruce Sterling, a noted science fiction writer and futurist covering some of his ideas of what the future may hold. Sterling very cleverly breaks the book into seven parts based upon a soliloquoy from Shakespeare covering the ages of man from birth to death, and wittily prophesies what life may shape itself into in our near future. Two ...

General Sterling Price and the Confederacy2 reviews
Thomas C. Reynolds

Missouri History Museum Press, 2009

Fascinating Primary Source by the 2nd Confederate Governor of Missouri
This book was originally written in 1867 by Governor Thomas C. Reynolds, the 2nd Confederate Governor of Missouri, while in exile in Mexico City. Governor Reynolds wrote it in longhand, but neglected to finish his memoirs after returning to the United States. These papers were re-discovered in 1898 and transcribed into a more permanent form. This edition is valuable as a primary source ...

Holy Fire (Bantam Spectra Book)39 reviews
Bruce Sterling

Spectra, 1997

Great Book
Really well written. It brought up a lot of important questions such as, "what is the nature of age and youth?" The characters were vibrant and complex. I highly recommend it.

Having Your Baby Through Egg Donation12 reviews
Elen Sarasohn Glazer, Evelina Weidman Sterling

Perspectives Press (IN), 2005

A well needed book!
Finally ~ A book for people deciding about egg donor. When I went through egg donor 5 years ago, there was VERY LITTLE info available, so this is wonderful to finally have a resource. Also, a woman commented on who in their 30's need egg donors. Actually, I was in my 20's and needed an egg donor. Many women have POF (Premature Ovarian Failure) and cannot have their own children, so this is ...

Sterling Flatware Identification & Value Guide19 reviews
Tere Hagan

L.W. Book Sales, 1999

Sterling Flatware Identification & Value Guide
This has become my bible for identifying sterling flatware. Of course, it has the most popular patterns, and obscure patterns may not be found; but generally, it is a great resource for collectors or those who sell flatware on auction sites. I keep it right by the computer, and use it almost on a daily basis. I have recommended it several times to those who don't know how to ID what they have. I ...

Sterling Biographies: George Washington: An American Life2 reviews
Laurie Calkhoven

Sterling, 2007

George, I hardly knew ya!
This is the best biography for young people I've seen in a long time. I grew up loving biographies, and am always drawn to new ones on the shelves. The format is beautiful, and the writing clear, concise and entertaining. A must-have for classrooms, libraries, and the personal collections of history buffs of all ages.

Sterling Biographies: Albert Einstein: The Miracle Mind1 review
Tabatha Yeatts

Sterling, 2007

Easy read
An interesting biography of Einstein in an easy readable manner. I don't believe elementary age children would want to read all his personal life dilemnas but more appropriate for middle school children and up.

Sterling Ruby
Jorg Heiser, Robert Hobbs, ...

JRP|Ringier, 2009

In a 2008 review, New York Times art critic Roberta Smith glowingly endorsed German-born, Los Angeles-based artist Sterling Ruby, calling him "one of the most interesting artists to emerge in this century. That's only eight years, of course," she added, "but the claim may stick." Ruby--who was born in 1972--uses whatever media suits his ideas; projects have included sculpture, collage, installation, painting, ceramics, video and printmaking. ...

Cuba 1952-1959: The True Story of Castro's Rise to Power4 reviews
Manuel Marquez-Sterling

Kleiopatria Digital Press, 2009

Cuba 1952-1959 The True Story of Castro's Rise to Power
I've just finished this extremely engrossing book and highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in the sad TRUTH about the tragedy of Fidel Castro's coming to power. The book was written by Manuel Marquez-Sterling, and no one knows, better than he does, the facts concerning this very turbulent time. He explains quite clearly, the madness that took over common sense and allowed this ...
