The Crooked Man is my favorite Hellboy story
The Crooked Man is a wonderful, self-contained gem of a story. You absolutely don't have to read volumes 1-9 before you read this. This is a great place to start. The story is set in Appalachia. I'm a Tennessean, Scots-Irish, and I love bluegrass. The story captures something really cool and unsettling about Appalachian folklore and witchcraft, seeming authentic w/o making fun of the stupid ...

A Great Introduction to The Barefoot Contessa
This is the First Barefoot Contessa Cookbook and a great introduction to Ina's cooking. I think this is my second favorite Ina cookbook after Barefoot in Paris: Easy French Food You Can Make at Home (my absolute favorite). I like that this cookbook (like most of Ina's cookbooks) is organized into Appetizers, Soups, Salads, Dinner, Vegetables, Desserts, and Breakfast. It makes it easier for me ...

Awesome, cool, great! (My son's opinion)
This is a great book. My son read the first in the series and handed it to me saying "You really need to read this book, mom." I love to read so I took the book, thinking it was a 'kids' book and wouldn't really keep my interest, but I was pleasantly surprised. When he requested the second, which he read in only a few days I read that too. And now the third one has come and gone. My son is 13 and ...

The Northeast includes the following recipes: -Maine: Whoopie Pie with Seven-Minute Frosting ...

AWESOMEEE!
Best cupcake book I have ever bought. No alterations needed on any recipes that I have baked yet (made over 15 recipes). Frostings are rich and not too sweet. Cake is light and not too dense.

Don't hesitate
Letters of a Woman Homesteader This was recommended in one of Jessamyn West's memos. It was so interesting I could not put it down. How courageous this woman was and what a great sense of humor. If you ever thought life was too hard to move forward, just read this book and become inspired!

Sweet little romance
This was a sweet little short story about a middle-aged woman who has left an abusive husband. Despite a loving and protective family in her grown son Aiden and his wife Caitriona (Caitriona is a "Druid," a reference which might be explained more fully in the author's other works, but just comes across as kind of random here-- apparently it means she can cast mild spells of influence, read ...

Cooking for a family for the first time
I'd "cooked" for myself and been a special occasion cook-- but never had the responsibility of daily meals for a family until recently. This book saved me. Instead of poring through multiple cookbooks and magazines, I started creating menus, shopping lists and dinners based solely on the recipes in this book. My family loved them and so did I. The ingredients are easy to find and the ...

A thoughtful journey through the end of civilzation
"At the funeral of Homo sapiens there will be few mourners." I loved this book. So many end-of-the-world tales center on violence, war, superhuman heroes and unrealistic resolutions. Earth Abides is unique. It follows the story of "Ish", a biologist who was busy doing research alone in the mountains of California when a virus swept around the planet wiping out all but a few members of the ...

Alton Brown "Rocks" and Teaches Basic Techniques I Should Have Known for 50 years and Didn't!
Love this guy! My son-in-law, the chef, and daughter told me about this book. Alton Brown teaches CHEF's types of techniques. For instance: I never could get breading right! It was always a mess and fell off, ultimately. Now I know why: my ingredients were fine! My technique was awful! Brown writes in a down-to-earth, sometimes humorous way that makes one want to actually READ this ...

Fascinating piece of history
"The Places in Between" is an important book to read because Afghanistan has been in the news for years, and newspaper reporters have never painted a compelling picture of what the country is really like until now. I truly enjoyed this informative best-selling travel narrative. Rory Stewart eloquently describes the terrain, the people, and his experiences in a land that is in a time wharp. We ...

The Dark Side of the Plant Kingdom.
The reviews of "Wicked Plants: The Weed that Killed Lincoln's Mother & Other Botanical Atrocities", by Amy Stewart, were so favorable that I ordered it without much reservation. I was not disappointed. As one who has Datura growing in my garden and with oleander within half a block I am well aware of some of the most dangerous vascular plants, but Amy Stewart also throws in several taxa that ...

Love This Book
Enjoyed the first book and now I have another 250 recipes to make. All of the dishes turn out just as pretty as the pictures and taste great as well. I bought this book for both of my grown kids, who are beginner cooks and they both love it as well. They both said that having the pictures help them realize what the dish should look like and whether they are interested in making the recipe. Both ...

The best for beginner
I went over Larson twice and Stewart once as a part of my Calculus I II III study. So here is how I feel the difference between Larson 8th edition and Stewart 6th edition. Stewart text is better than Larson, especially in multivariable calculus section. I would say it is 50% better. Because the graphics are much better and clear. The multivariable figures in Larson rumble together and take ...

Preferred Mosby to Bates
Update: I have warmed up to Bates as the semester has gone on; in several sections ("derm" for instance) it has a better selection and discussion of abnormal illustrations and photos than Mosby. Plus, it is usually more succinct but still gives the meat of what you need to know. Finally, it sometimes organizes assessment advice and abnormal assessments better than Mosby. At this point I would ...
