West Springfield Massachusetts: Stories Carved in Stone1 review
Rusty Clark

Dog Pond Press, 2004

'Stories Carved in Stone' is a Cauldron of Images !
This is such an enjoyable read ! Ms. Clark demonstrates excellent voice for the reader and enables one to envision what West Springfield was like in the beginning of its existance. Ms. Clark has a talent for enveloping her readers into the times that made West Springfield what it is today. Thanks to Ms. Clark's talent of 'reading' gravestones, one is enriched with a keen sense of the strength ...

Arlington Cemetery: A Nation's Story Carved in Stone1 review

Pomegranate Communications, 2001

Grand book done by a real vet!
Lorraine Jacyno Dieterle personally autgraphed a copy for my mother on May 20th 2004 at the Museum of Women in American Military History in Arlington Virginia. Mom built torpedoes in WWII. She and Lorraine Dieterle enjoyed talking about their mutual WW2 experiences. Highly recommended.

The Hand-Carved Creche and Other Christmas Stories2 reviews
James Kilgo

Hill Street Press, 2006

What a nice way to spend Christmas
I discovered Kilgo through his stunning novel, Daughter of My People. This is a little book, but it is rich--more insight and meaning and substance here that there is in most 300 page books. Kilgo can really turn a phrase. And while his telling of his childhood Christmas stories set in South Carolina is perfect, the only problem if that I was left wanting more.

Holyoke, Massachusetts: Stories Carved in Stone
Rusty Clark

Dog Pond Press, 2006

The story of Holyoke, the industrial marvel of the mid-nineteenth century, begins in the small church-centered farming community at the turn of the 18th century. It wasn?t until the mid-1840s, about the time the Connecticut River Railroad was built through Ireland Parish, that the little village on the rapids began to attract the attention of outsiders. In 1848, Holyoke, with its proposed configuration of dams, canals, and mills, became the ...

Carved Box, The (Gillian Chan)1 review
Gillian Chan

Kids Can Press, Ltd., 2001

I couldn't put it down!
I am a fan of Gillian Chan's short stories for young adults. I basically devoured her two short story collections, Glory Days, and Golden Girl, so when I saw that she had written a novel, I picked it up. From the very first page, I was swept into the story. My own beloved dog had died just a week before I read this novel, and so the character of Dog especially appealed to me. It is not easy to ...
