my daughter loves it!
My 8 yr old daughter (a very good reader) loves this book!! She first read Where the Red Fern Grows and loved that. She was inspired to read this one and loves it even more! She may be a good reader, but she is picky. She looks forward to reading this one. She says that Wilson Rawls makes her feel like she is really there.

Summer for the Gods: The Scopes Trial and America's Continuing Debate Over Science and Religion59 reviews
Edward J. Larson

Basic Books, 2006

The Echoes of the Past
Summer for the Gods The echoes of the past continue to reverberate. Although it's been eighty years since the Scopes Trial, the debate over the teaching of the origins of life goes on. The monumental intellectual battle pitted Williams Jennings Bryan against Clarence Darrow following the indictment and arrest of a Dayton, Tennessee public school teacher for violating a state law forbidding ...

Indian Summer: The Secret History of the End of an Empire24 reviews
Alex Von Tunzelmann

Henry Holt and Co., 2007

Fun, and well-written
I enjoyed this book a lot. The writing style is excellent and the story is fascinating. I've read a few books about the amazing story of Indian independence. This one is focused on the personalities involved, particularly Dickie and Edwina Mountbatten and Nehru. As a book about people and personalities, it is more approachable than some of the history books; some of it is downright gossipy, ...

Prodigal Summer: A Novel443 reviews
Barbara Kingsolver

Harper Perennial, 2001

spring is the right time to read this book
I just finished this book, and I learned so much. I am in the process of planting my garden, and will definitely do things differently because I read this book. It is a wonderful fictional read that sneaks in several valuable lessons about ecology and nature. I loved the characters and I wish they were my friends.

Dark Summer4 reviews
Iris Johansen

St. Martin's Press, 2008

Super read
I have never found one of Iris' books that I did not like and this one is right in the same place. It only took me a day and a half to read and I hated putting it down.

Summer of the Sea Serpent (Magic Tree House, No. 31)24 reviews
Mary Pope Osborne

Random House Books for Young Readers, 2004

ten stars from four year old
An excellent story of not judging a book by its cover. There are many twists and turns in the plot which encourage the reader to continue with the story. Our four year old was able to figure out part of the plot before it happened, but it didn't ruin the story at all. This was one of our sons favorites of the Magic Tree House books.

Summer at Tiffany36 reviews
Marjorie Hart

William Morrow, 2007

A Summer Affair: A Novel31 reviews
Elin Hilderbrand

Little, Brown and Company, 2008

I love all her books!
This was such a good book! Claire is a retired glass-blowing mom of four living full time in Nantucket. She is asked by the richest man on Nantucket to co-chair the committee for Nantucket's Children charity, begin glass-blowing again to make the auction piece, and call in a favor from her ex-boyfriend who is a huge rock star for the entertainment. Claire feels the need to agree to it and puts ...

The Last Summer (of You and Me)23 reviews
Ann Brashares

Riverhead Trade, 2008

The Last Summer (of you and me) is one of the best books of the summer!
This book is great. This story is perfect for reading by the beach or sitting outside on a cool summer evening. I loved this book! The Last Summer ( of you and me) is on my list for best books of summer. And even if summer is now over you can still enjoy the romance and the sister bonding. The ending will put a smile on your face and make you happy for days. This book made me tear up a little. ...

How I Spent My Summer Vacation (Dragonfly Books)9 reviews
Mark Teague

Dragonfly Books, 1997

Great fun for back to school
I'm a teacher and like to read this book to my students in the first week of school. Then I pose a challenge to them. I challenge them to tell me about their own summer vacation, but like Wallace, start out with the truth, and then let their imagination take over. I get completely ridiculous and fun stories about trips to the lake that end up as coronations as supreme master of planet zoorg. ...

Summer Ball14 reviews
Mike Lupica

Puffin, 2008

Tied With First Book
The beginning made me unsure but once he got to camp (or met Tarik) I knew it would be good. I was worried that Danny would walk over everyone, but between Rasheed (at first) Lamar ( He doesn't deserve to be Named after Lamar Odom) and Coach "My Way" Powers I had plenty of people to hate (Teddy was absent because Richie told the mafia to get him). Powers was tied with Lamar and Teddy for biggest ...

Mediterranean Summer: A Season on France's Cote d'Azur and Italy's Costa Bella20 reviews
David Shalleck, Erol Munuz

Broadway, 2008

A delightful... (even a little suspenseful) read.
Excellently written. There's the excitement of how David finds his provisions in each port. There's also the fear of whether of not a particular meal will "work" with the extremely demanding owners of the yacht. And the suspense of how a meal will be prepared (for sometimes over 100 guests!) within the confines of a yacht's galley. Then there's the thrill of some moments of real sailing ! ...

The Perfect Summer: England 1911, Just Before the Storm27 reviews
Juliet Nicolson

Grove Press, 2008

England before the Great War
This is an extremely well-written social history of England during the summer of 1911. We follow the activities and actions of many different people, from high to middle to lower class, during what was considered one of the most beautiful three summer months in the 20th century. The author gives us a carefree look at how the folks lived, and what they did and how they thought. Over everything, ...

Summer By The Sea19 reviews
Susan Wiggs

Mira, 2008

WOW!
This was my first Wiggs book. To say I was pleased is an understatement. This book was an experience, it felt epic to me. It spans 20 years and you just get lost in the bittersweet sad story. This is one of those books that you still feel in your heart long after you have put it down. READ IT ! READ IT! You won't be sorry. I can not wait to read another Susan Wiggs novel.

The Summer of 1787: The Men Who Invented the Constitution (The Simon & Schuster America Collection)38 reviews
David O. Stewart

Simon & Schuster, 2008

Like Making Sausage
Twain once said that there are two things you don't want to see made - sausages and laws. This is certainly true for the making of our Constitution and Mr. Stewart takes the reader into the kitchen to see how it was made. This is a riveting account of the Constitutional Convention in 1787 where a host of interesting characters muddled, blundered, compromised, posed, blustered and worked ...

Summer of My German Soldier (Puffin Modern Classics)200 reviews
Bette Greene

Puffin, 2006

An adult's review of an excellent book
My daughter is now too older and far too accomplished a reader in her own right to need or want me to read to her, but I wish I had known of this when we were still reading together. I read this for a couple of reasons. As a native of Little Rock I wanted to read what is perhaps the most celebrated juvenile novel to have come out of my home state. Second, I have seen it highly praised and ...

Summer on a Plate: More than 120 delicious, no-fuss recipes for memorable meals from Loaves and Fishes4 reviews
Anna Pump, Gen Leroy

Simon & Schuster, 2008

Summer on a Plate
Everyone in our family has chosen one and sometimes two recipes out of this book (at the same time)to prepare for dinner parties this summer. Anna Pump has done it again. I have all of her books and this one is right up there. The layers of flavors in the dishes are marvelous. Recently our guests raved about her Creamed Carrot soup with Ginger and Lime. Her Citrus-Marinated Salmon is ...

The Clique Summer Collection #3: Alicia (Clique Series)7 reviews

Poppy, 2008

Courtesy of Teens Read Too
Even though ALICIA is the third book in THE CLIQUE SUMMER COLLECTION, I am yet to be bored by the series! Alicia is the character of the Clique who can stand out in a crowd. She goes to spend her summer without her parents in Spain, and she and Nina (who came to OCD in the series and caused a lot of havoc) create a lot of trouble. Alicia finds herself with a job she does not want, to pay for ...

Still Summer65 reviews
Jacquelyn Mitchard

Grand Central Publishing, 2008

starts slow, picks up speed and intensity
I listened to the book over a three week period. At first, it was a bit dull in the set-up of the main characters. Once however, the women go on their boat trip, the pace picks ups significantly. I couldn't wait to listen each day on my commute to and from work. Some elements were predictable while others did surprise me. This book doesn't get a five star review as some of the characters and ...
