Theatre (Theatre (McGraw-Hill))
Robert Cohen

McGraw-Hill Humanities/Social Sciences/Languages, 2007

This lively introduction to theatre offers equal measures of appreciation of theatrical arts, history of performance, and descriptions of the collaborative theatrical crafts. The author?s enthusiasm for and knowledge of the current theatre, highlighted by contemporary production shots from around the world, put the students in the front row. The text includes extensive excerpts from seven plays: Prometheus Bound, Oedipus Tyrannos, The York ...

The Singer's Musical Theatre Anthology - Mezzo-Soprano BK/2CDS (Singer's Musical Theatre Anthology ...11 reviews
VARIOUS

HAL LEONARD CORPORATION, 2007

Singer's MT Anthology Mezzo
I bought this book mainly for the use of one song for a callback. Using and installing the CD software was fairly easy and helped a ton when it came time for the callback audition. It's nice to use the software (Amazing Slow Downer)(funny name)) to slow down, and speed up the tempo you would like to rehearse your songs with. The CDs are not perfect, but it can be put to good use when you don't ...

The Screwtape Letters: First Ever Full-cast Dramatization of the Diabolical Classic (Radio Theatre)32 reviews

Tyndale Entertainment, 2009

Screwtape
I ordered this to listen to with my daughter. We are both intrigued by hearing how the demons view humans. It is an eye-opener!

Theatre5 reviews
David Mamet

Faber & Faber, 2010

PC enthusiasts beware
Mamet here attacks various theories of theater, most notably ideological ones, following Paul Johnson's critique of Brecht. That the book is short I do not see as a flaw, and I do not find any repetition other than than necessary to overcome entrenched views in the academy.

The Singer's Musical Theatre Anthology: Soprano, Vol. 311 reviews
VARIOUS

HAL LEONARD CORPORATION, 2000

Inappropriate Review
I only say that the review titled, "Some Fantastic Unknown Songs!" is inappropriate, because those are NOT the songs in this volume. I bought this volume thinking I would get the songs like "Moonfall" and "Unusual Way," but I didn't. This book is great don't get me wrong; I'll still get a lot out of it. Just don't read reviews thinking they are totally accurate.

Acting in Musical Theatre: A Comprehensive Course5 reviews
Joe Deer, Rocco Dal Vera

Routledge, 2008

Wonderful Musical Theatre Book
If you are a musical theatre teacher, student, pianist, director, musical director or choreographer, you will find this book to be really informative and useful. Joe Deer and Rocco Dal Vera have broken down the process of approaching musical theatre in an intelligent, clear and creative way without being dry or overly technical. I devoured this book joyfully (and honestly am still working my way ...

Living Theatre: A History6 reviews
Edwin Wilson, Alvin Goldfarb

McGraw-Hill Humanities/Social Sciences/Languages, 2006

Great Book That Falls Apart a Little at the End
This is an excellent book that is interesting, very well organized and extremely well written. Then World War II ends and the book fails to remain interesting or well organized. Basically it falls apart. I believe that what happened is that without historical concensus to determine what is important and less important, the book bogs down as it delivers raw facts about present day theater ...

Theatre: Brief Version (Theatre (Brief Edition))10 reviews
Robert Cohen

McGraw-Hill Humanities/Social Sciences/Languages, 2007

Great Textbook
This was a great textbook and easy to read and follow. What I liked most about this text is the current playwrights, and screenplays that were discussed in this book. To read about it and then be able to see some of these screenplays was amazing.

Plays for the Theatre2 reviews
Oscar G. Brockett, Robert J. Ball

Wadsworth Publishing, 2010

tinam
I purchased Plays for the Theatre at Amazon for a fraction of the cost of the bookstore price. Although it took longer for the shipment to arrive, it was worth the wait. This book was exactly what I needed for my 6-week class and I still use it to read the classic plays.

The Theatre of the Absurd4 reviews
Martin Esslin

Vintage, 2004

None Finer
If you have ever wished for one book to neatly package absurdist theatre, Mr. Esslin's book is the one. This book is readable, comprehendable, entertaining and engaging. In fact, it's rather difficult to put down. His introduction does wonders to dispel any myths as to what absurdist theatre is and isn't. He follows the introduction by individually highlighting those playwrights often ...

The Essential Theatre2 reviews
Oscar G. Brockett, Robert J. Ball

Wadsworth Publishing, 2010

What's to review?
If you have a Theater degree from any American college in the last decade, then you already own this book. This is the definitive text on Theater History. Brockett is the authority. No other comprehensive book on "general" theater history comes close. If you want the book that is on every theater historian's shelf, referenced in every Theater thesis or dissertation, and the text for every Theater ...

Theatre for Community Conflict and Dialogue: The Hope Is Vital Training Manual4 reviews
Michael Rohd

Heinemann Drama, 1998

Improvisational Theatre as an Aid to Society
Michael Rohd is currently doing exciting work across the country, using improvisational theater techniques to connect with young people and communities in ways that echo Paul Sills' original intention when he founded The Compass Players and Second City: to connect viscerally with the community to create a dialogue for social change. As Jeffrey Sweet documented in his book "Something ...

Theatre of the Oppressed6 reviews
Augusto Boal

Theatre Communications Group, 1993

Thought provoking, educational, exciting
The first two sections (analyzing Aristotle's Poetics and Brecht's aesthetics), while long, dense and confusing, make clear Boal's argument for the necessity of a change in theater practice if it's going to be a vehicle of change. It also cleared up my ancient philosophy course from college. I'm glad he's written other books, because the actual information about theatre of the oppressed tends to ...

The World of Theatre: Tradition and Innovation
Mira Felner, Claudia Orenstein

Allyn & Bacon, 2005

The World of Theatre is the first introduction to theatre book to truly focus on diversity and globalism, integrating coverage of multicultural, international and experimental theatre throughout. Theatre is presented as a global and multicultural form that reflects both traditional and evolving world views. While the American commercial theatre and European forms are central to the text, alternative theatres are placed side by side for ...

Towards a Poor Theatre (Theatre Arts (Routledge Paperback))5 reviews
Jerzy Grotowski

Routledge, 2002

A Classic
There is no better book that I have read on the theory and practice of theatre. As Peter Brook says in the preface, "Grotowski is unique. Why? Because no-one else in the world, to my knowledge, no-one since Stanislavsky, has investigated the nature of acting, its phenomenon, its meaning, the nature and science of its mental-physical-emotional processes as deeply and completely as Grotowski." ...

History of the Theatre8 reviews
Oscar G. Brockett, Franklin J. Hildy

Allyn & Bacon, 2007

Theatre History
Very good condition, except some minor highlighting in one section, but not invasive to reading
