The Trouble with Boys: A Surprising Report Card on Our Sons, Their Problems at School, and What Parents and ...15 reviews
Peg Tyre

Crown, 2008

Why are boys falling behind?
This book is a follow on to the author's Newsweek cover story about the widening gap between boys and girls academic performance in the United States. She makes the case that, just as we rallied in the 90s to help girls catch up to boys in math and science, we need to do the same for boys in reading and writing. The book cites a great deal of research from schools across the United States to show ...

Many Lives, Many Masters: The True Story of a Prominent Psychiatrist, His Young Patient, and the Past-Life ...348 reviews
Brian L. Weiss

Fireside, 1988

Extremely interesting book
No matter what side of the fence you are on regarding past lives, reincarnation, etc., the book is extremely interesting. For anyone who has ever met someone and kept thinking they had met before or instantly hit it off, this is a great book to read. No matter what your beliefs are, it doesn't hurt to try to be a good person and treat other people well, a good universal message.

Alphabet Juice: The Energies, Gists, and Spirits of Letters, Words, and Combinations Thereof; Their Roots, ...1 review
Roy Blount Jr.

Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2008

Engaging, entertaining, and even educational
ALPHABET JUICE is a potpourri of comments on words and the English language, arranged in alphabetically-ordered entries and presented with Blount's characteristic good humor. It is somewhat akin to books on the proper use of words and language, but it should not be pigeon-holed as simply a user's guide. While it does contain a fair measure of advice and commentary on usage (Blount is not ...

Caps for Sale: A Tale of a Peddler, Some Monkeys and Their Monkey Business72 reviews
Esphyr Slobodkina

HarperTrophy, 1987

Me and my 2.5 year old son love this book
This is a great book for kids, even young ones around 2.5 years old. It's an engaging story and my son loves the part where the man wakes up to find his hats gone, and looks up and sees all the monkeys wearing the hats! He asks me to read it everynight, and remembers the phrase "caps for sale."

Rich Dad, Poor Dad: What the Rich Teach Their Kids About Money--That the Poor and Middle Class Do Not!2195 reviews
Robert T. Kiyosaki, Sharon L. Lechter

Business Plus, 2000

An eye-opening experience
The ideas in Rich Dad, Poor Dad have changed my way of thinking about money. Some of the things said in this book are shocking, but they make perfect logical sense after a bit of reflection. If you want to understand money, I'd recommend you buy this book for you and all of your friends.

Annie Leibovitz at Work
Annie Leibovitz

Random House, 2008

?The first thing I did with my very first camera was climb Mt. Fuji. Climbing Mt. Fuji is a lesson in determination and moderation. It would be fair to ask if I took the moderation part to heart. But it certainly was a lesson in respecting your camera. If I was going to live with this thing, I was going to have to think about what that meant. There were not going to be any pictures without it." ?Annie Leibovitz Annie Leibovitz describes ...

The Necklace: Thirteen Women and the Experiment That Transformed Their Lives9 reviews
Cheryl Jarvis

Ballantine Books, 2008

A heart-warmer
This is a charming story, nicely and succinctly told. It's hard to put down once you open it up. How the women changed their lives is but one part of the tale, however. How they brought in women outside their group, passing the necklace around for the enjoyment of many, broadens the book beyond friendship to make what they're doing a real phenomenon, and a model for what good people could do in ...

The Americans29 reviews

Steidl/National Gallery of Art, Washington, 2008

The definitive "The Americans"
We're lucky to have this edition. Robert Frank is an old man with health issues now. That he is healthy enough to oversee this work is wonderful. Everything about this edition - especially in comparison to the 2007 Delpine edition I purchased earlier this year - is first-rate. I wish I had known this was coming out! The book is a little smaller than the Delpine, but that's the only real ...

The Three Signs of a Miserable Job: A Fable for Managers (And Their Employees)45 reviews
Patrick M. Lencioni

Jossey-Bass, 2007

Being a manager takes more than signing letters & receiving fat checks...
I was wondering whether most managers (especially those who have "a job for life") would follow your advice. Indeed, being in that position takes more than signing letters and receiving fat checks every month. I have been reading your books over and over again. Thank you Mr Lencioni for enlightening my mind!

Their Eyes Were Watching God405 reviews
Zora Neale Hurston

Harper Perennial Modern Classics, 2006

Southern Florida in the early 20th century and one black woman's story
This 1937 novel has become a classic of its time. It is a mere 184 pages long, but the edition of the book I read is packed by commentary. I skipped this commentary because I wasn't particularly interested in literary or social analysis. I just wanted to experience the book for itself and the story it told. Reading it this way, I actually "felt" the book in the way the author intended. And, ...

Words Their Way: Word Sorts for Within Word Pattern Spellers (2nd Edition) (Words Their Way Series)1 review
Marcia Invernizzi, Francine Johnston, ...

Prentice Hall, 2008

Helpful for teaching spelling in a child-centered way
This book is helpful for offering a plan to teach spelling through word sorts. The steps are included, as are the words for each sort in an easy to copy format. I have found it useful after giving a whole class spelling assessment to teach small groups using these books. This allows me to better reach each child based on what she/he needs to be taught. I recommend this book along with others in ...

Toxic Parents: Overcoming Their Hurtful Legacy and Reclaiming Your Life121 reviews
Susan Forward, Craig Buck

Bantam, 2002

This is what can really change your life
... having someone who stands by your side. Perfect examples, broad life experience, no judgement, just a quest for the inner truth each one of us has deep inside. I suggest this book to all those who need a neutral point of view, beyond common sense, religion, and even psychotherapy itself.
