WordNet 3 (largest English dictionary and thesaurus)4 reviews

OSNOVA, 2009

Most useful to me beyond the built-in dictionary on Kindle.
WordNet3 is fascinating. For now I am not planning to substitute it as my default dictionary. I find Kindle's built-in New Oxford American Dictionary to be a solid resource and not particularly improved on by the Webster Dictionary and Thesaurus. The latter so far seems more likely to define words too flippantly or tersely by a just shift in the part of speech. However, this one -- WordNet ...

Oxford American Writer's Thesaurus31 reviews

Oxford University Press, USA, 2008

looks good so far
I bought this for my 10 year old daughter who wants to be a writer and illustrator someday. The "Thematic Lists" in the book will be helpful in brainstorming ideas. It is simply a listing of things in a category. There are lists of Animals, Art, Clothing, Dance, Food, Games, Geography, Music, Mythology, Science, Transportation, and more. They are obviously not complete lists, but will help ...

Richard Bayan

McGraw-Hill, 2006

This Book is a Werewolf Holding a Chainsaw
That's about the only way I can sum up how awesome and powerful this book is for writing web copy that sells. Richard Bayan successfully organizes over six thousand synonyms and useful phrases into one slim book, which has never left my desk since I bought it. What I love about this book is that it's much more than just a thesaurus, it contains a variety of useful phrases that work ...

Edward L. Zuckerman PhD

The Guilford Press, 2005

Resource for Counseling Psychology Students
This is a great book for helping beginning psychotherapists (and students in training). I use it to teach Master's level students about psychotherapy skills. It has loads of clinical information, how to interview clients, information about various disorders and treatments, and is a great resource for writing psychological reports. I highly recommend this book for training therapists (not bad ...

Fifteen Thousand Useful Phrases5 reviews, 2009

A Real Stunner
It may very well be the longest book title ever. "Fifteen Thousand Useful Phrases: A Practical Handbook of Pertinent Expressions, Striking Similes, Literary, Commercial, Conversational, and Oratorical Terms, for the Embellishment of Speech and Literature, and the Improvement of the Vocabulary of Those Persons Who Read, Write, and Speak English." But it's a wonderful resource for writers. I ...

Oxford Mini Dictionary and Thesaurus (Dictionary/Thesaurus)1 review
Oxford Dictionaries

Oxford University Press, USA, 2008

Mini Dictionary
I really liked that I could just throw this dictionary in my pocketbook. Sometimes when I'm reading and don't understand the meaning of a word, or its a totally new word that I would like to add to my vocabulary, it's very nice to be able to pull out my dictionary right there on the spot.

The Clinical Documentation Sourcebook: The Complete Paperwork Resource for Your Mental Health Practice7 reviews
Donald E. Wiger

Wiley, 2010

Starting a mental health pracitce-urgently.
I had to find an office and begin seeing a few patients 6 months before I had planned to open my part-time private practice. Having read many books on the topic, I felt ready to get going. Alas, I did not want to spend a lot on a computer office management system when only seeing a few clients for now. Thankfully, after reading the reviews on Amazon.com, I found the Clinical Documentation ...

Webster's All-in-One Dictionary & Thesaurus14 reviews

Federal Street Press, 2008

One of the best purchases I've ever made
I have used this book countless times for my classes. It is very thorough, and light enough to carry to the library and class, even though it is about 3" thick. Because I do a lot of writing for my classes, it has really come in handy with the thesaurus included. I could not write without it now.

Webster's New World Dictionary and Thesaurus24 reviews
Editors of Webster's New World Dictionaries, Charlton Laird

Webster's New World, 2002

Never too late to learn with the right books
My son, of 44 years old has ADHD. His letters to me over the last 25 years have been at 3rd grade level. Even with special ed and etc...his spelling and writting, not to mention understanding similiatries between words, was very poor. He requested a dictionary so, I sent him one. He's in prison and did not have one to use, nor are they allowed to borrow. Very strict rules. Since he got the ...

The Doubleday Roget's Thesaurus in Dictionary Form2 reviews

Doubleday, 2009

A necessity for an interesting and appropriate vocabulary
I have used Doubleday Roget's Thesaurus in Dictionary Form for 30 plus years. I started using it in college because it was easy to look up words in the dictionary format. I continued using it in my career as a writer. I cannot imagine writing letters, speeches, etc. without it. Now that I have retired, my wife uses my old Roget's Thesaurus for her crossword puzzles and loves it. Between the ...

The Thinker's Thesaurus: Sophisticated Alternatives to Common Words (Expanded Second Edition)29 reviews
Peter E. Meltzer

W. W. Norton & Company, 2010

Oh, the irony
"I though this book would really help my writting. Wrong, for every word, the book only gives you one other word to replace it with and although it states that these words are used by journalists, I find that incredably hard to believe because I haven't found a single word I had heard before yet. I guess if you are a journalist this would be a good book but for those who would just like to ...
