completely wonderful
The last book by this great journalist. It makes perfect sense that he traveled with Herodotus, and that this ancient Greek writer, the first historian, or the first reporter, was like a companion to him. History is stories. Kapuscinsky was most wise in always remembering this and he learned it from Herodotus. His writing is transparent. He writes so you can know. He never forgets that nothing is ...

Fantastic, well-written, and eye-opening
Upon first glance, it might appear that this book details economic aspects of a single industry, namely that of T-shirts. You'd be mistaken. It instead offers an insightful look into several different aspects of T-shirt production, including agriculture, factory working conditions, free trade (and lack thereof), and concluding with the world-wide used T-shirt market. Each of these ...

A compulsive page turner
This book is almost impossible to put down and is absolutely inspiring to read. Deaf to the pleas of my wife and children I read on into the night. I often felt I was actually there with Ted as he copes with some pretty dire stuff. As a New Zealand motorcyclist living in India I could relate so much to his experiences. More needs to be written about the amazing opportunities to ride in India, so ...

Beautiful Edition
There is no need for me to go into what a marvelous and timeless classic "Guliver's Travels" is. The satire, while nearly 300 hundred years old, is as fresh today as it was in the 1720s. What I will say about this particular edition is that it is very beautifully done. (If you can get the hardcover edition instead of the softcover, all the better.) The typeset, color engravings and supplemental ...

Fellow Yahoos, read this book!
Gulliver's Travels is not a children's fantasy written by an avuncular Englishman. This book, instead, is a searing indictment of the human race written by a brilliant satirist and misanthrope. The Lilliput episode is most clearly inscribed in the public consciousness, perhaps because it is the least overtly damning of the human species. By the end of the book, however, when Gulliver is forced to ...

The Size of the World
It has been a pleasure to revisit the travels of Marco Polo. I was transfixed by these stories of travel and adventure when I was a child, and never questioned the veracity of the narrative. I know today that the narrative has been corrupted over the centuries, that "The Travels" can scarcely be used as an historical reference, and that a more tantalizing and complete manuscript has probably been ...

amazingly good read
It took me a while to get to this book - it kept being recommended by friends, but I was a bit put off by the effort I thought I would have to put into reading a book written 300 years ago. Well, I was really suprised - "Gulliver's Travels" is easier to reads, and is certainly written much better, than most modern novels. Swift certainly didn't have too high an opinion about humanity, ...

Spending time with Steinbeck
TRAVELS WITH CHARLEY gives us a chance to move to an up-close-and-personal position with the aloof, John Steinbeck, At the age of 60 in the fall of 1960. Steinbeck acquired a primitive pickup-style recreational vehicle, packed up a few belongings, and loaded his faithful poodle. He drove throughout the United States to reconnect with the inhabitants of the nation. Like any other tourist who ...

I'd inadvertently brought myself to the island
So Alaine de Botton discovers on his trip to the Bahamas. I read and reread this book for such lines--sly takes on old chestnuts, in this case, Wherever you go, there you are. Each chapter's title page includes a list of places discussed and the "guide" employed in that chapter. Chapter 1, "On Anticipation," lists Barbados and Hammersmith, London, as the places and author J.K. Huysmans as the ...

These guides are the very best in the business. If I'm thinking of going on a trip, I think again if there isn't an Eyewitness guide in print. EGYPT is the same high calibre as all the others I've bought over the years.

There's gotta be a reason we seem to lack a crop of young literary lions writing anything really interesting. There's gotta be a reason there seem to be no big novels out these last years, none that are truly good. I don't know what it is, but this book, without intending to, suggests a few possibilities. Mr. Ferry is an old guy and this is his first book and it's a small, almost quiet book, but ...

An awesome ride... Essential reading for anyone who uses travel guidebooks
A young American, tired of life on Wall Street, takes a job as a travel writer for Lonely Planet. He arrives in Brazil and, amidst the temptations of beautiful women and the all-night partying of Copacabana beach, soon realises that he has been given a task of unimaginable proportions and an equally small stipend with which to fund it. Eight hundred miles of Brazilian coastline. Sixty towns. ...
