"We were not born to survive, only to live." --Merwin
Merwin touches the universal with specifics. Merwin's book bears a simplicity lacking in much of what we do today. His word choice in these poems rarely indicates they were written in the 1970's, but the style is poignantly modern nonetheless. As subjects, Merwin takes nature, aging and friendships. He peppers these with haunting feelings of hollowness, biblical allusions, and the occasional ...

To Think, These Are Still Questions We Must Ask Ourselves
Is it possible to celebrate your ancestry without being offensive if your ancestors were Confederates and/or opposed the Civil Rights Movement? What does the Confederate flag represent to you -- Southern Pride or racism? Tony Horwitz ponders such questions as he visits the battlefields of the Civil War and discovers how the "War Between the States" truly hasn't ended for some folks.

Glad I stuck with it
This latest book in the Betsy, Queen of the Vampires series, is the second book to come out of that household that I wanted to put down, but by the end, was glad I hadn't. The other book was Seraph of Sorrow co-written by MJD and her husband, Anthony Alongi. Betsy's half-sister, Laura, is the Antichrist, but purposely grew up to be a very nice person with occasional temper issues. Having ...

Place is the space
Adam Nicolson's //Sissinghurst: An Unfinished History// tells the story of his ongoing quest to convert the historic National Trust property that belonged to his grandmother, writer Vita Sackville-West, back to its origins as a working farm. Nicolson's sense of place is the animating spirit of this book: Sissinghurst's past, present, and future tucked into the ancient weald of the Kent ...

A satisfying book of "do-over" moments
We all have moments in our lives that we'd do over again if we could. Things that we regret we said, or things we're sorry we didn't say. But most of us just try to tamp down the memory of our failings and console ourselves with the thought that we'll do better next time. Lee Kravitz goes one step better. After losing his job, and beginning to wonder whether work is all there is to life, he ...

someone who shares my own thoughts
This is the only book I have read three times. I was so excited when I found Amazon and some more of Joan Anderson's books, as I hadn't been able to buy these in Australia. This book is for any woman, who has been a daughter, girlfriend, wife, mother, and hasn't had a lot of time for themselves. It makes you think, and it makes you long for solitude, and if you cant get it, value any time ...

A beautiful spiritual book that teaches the essential lessons of life
This is by far one of mr Van Praagh's best books. Not only does it provide the reassuring details that the soul lives on and is back to it's former life; but it also provides some of the greatest spiritual lessons in conjunction with teachings from those love ones that have crossed over. It couldn't have come at the best time for me as my father crossed over last month and being able to ...

madaris series
I have read every single one of the Madaris series and each one was very good. the better ones to me cam towards the end like Fire and desire, Secrect Love and then all that came after that. I am so much a fan of Brenda Jackson she goes on my favorite authors list hands down with Rochelle Alers. I just got into reading her books maybe a month ago and have now read all of this series and i am ...

Unfinished, essential
J.R.R. Tolkien's tales of Middle-Earth weren't restricted just to fantasy epic "Lord of the Rings." His life's work was spread over hundreds of stories and invented legends -- some were compiled into "The Silmarillion." But some were left over -- yes, there were even more stories that didn't make the cut. These little odd bits make up "Unfinished Tales of Numenor and Middle-Earth." The stories ...

Worth Every Page
This exhaustive, comprehensive and completely detailed masterpiece is a complete post-revisionist account of Reconstruction, providing analysis of every conceivable angle. It includes a convincing refutation of the Dunning school, why a revisionist school emerged, the nuts and bolts of Presidential Reconstruction, why "Radical Reconstruction" was never truly radical. The book describes how the ...

I loved it
There are so many things that the author describes in this book that everyone can relate to at one time or another in their life. She expressed on paper what most of us are thinking when in a relationship but never say. I thought the book was thought provoking and empowering. A delightful read and highly recommended.

Great story!
I purchased this book for my girls ages 9 and 11. They loved the story and so did we. We read it as a family read at night. The story was well written, engaging and funny. Zola, the main human character, is a great example for girls from her unique style to her effortless campaigning to do the right thing. We highly recommend this book.

For Devotees of the Series
Patrick O'Brian's unfinished twenty-first novel in the Aubrey-Maturin series was released four years after his death. Although at first I was hesitant to read an unfinished manuscript for many reasons, as a fan of the series, I am very happy to have had the opportunity to get one last glimpse of Admiral Aubrey and Dr. Maturin - and get a tiny glimpse inside Patrick O'Brian's creative process. ...

Unique in its own diversity
An excellent book, unique in its own diversity. The "Book Description" and "Inside Flap" above give a good description of how this book is about the science of the research and organizing of the Berkeley High School Diversity Project, I just wanted to add a little about how the telling of the book itself expresses an understanding of diversity. To me, the book is about the importance of ...
