Field Dressing and Butchering Upland Birds, Waterfowl, and Wild Turkeys1 review
Monte Burch

The Lyons Press, 2001

Great how to book for the novice
The first thing this book has going for it, is the size, since this is a book that you can carry with you on hunting trips as a step by step guide, or how to. Not only are the instructions absolutely complete but they are easy to follow, and the equipment required is inexpensive and in some cases free. Every legally hunted bird is covered from field dressing, preserving to cooking and recipes. ...

The Field & Stream Upland Bird Hunting Handbook (Field & Stream)2 reviews
Bill Tarrant

The Lyons Press, 1999

Covers It All, But Not In Depth
I can't help but feel a touch of sadness when I read this book--this was the last book Bill Tarrant wrote before he died. If you want a good look at the life of Bill Tarrant, read the introduction to "Best Way To Train Your Gun Dog." Tarrant was a fantastic writer and dedicated his life to ending brutality toward field dogs. I personally, looked at dogs in a new light after reading Best Way, ...

The Lost Upland: Stories of Southwestern France
W. S. Merwin

Shoemaker & Hoard, 2004

In The Lost Upland, award-winning poet W. S. Merwin explores his intimate knowledge of the people and the countryside in what is the home of the Lascaux caves, an ancient part of southwestern France. In three narratives of small-town life, Merwin shows with unmatched poetic and narrative power how the past is still palpably present. These stories offer the reader a brilliantly evocative and loving portrayal of the French country people and their ...

Wingshooter's Guide to North Dakota: Upland Birds & Waterfowl (Wingshooter's Guides)1 review
Chuck Johnson, Jason Smith

Wilderness Adventures Press, 1997

An overpriced book of basic, boilerplated information
This book was a huge disappointment. Extremely overpriced---much of the book consists of obsolete lists of restaurants, veterinarians, campgrounds, etc. Lots of generic, re-hashed information on things like dogs and guns and decoy layouts, with very little in the way of helping nonresidents understand the unique habits and habitats of North Dakota game birds.

Shrubs and Trees of the Southwest Uplands (Popular series - Southwest Parks and Monuments Association ; no. ...1 review
Francis Hapgood Elmore

Western Natl Parks Assoc, 1976

Shrubs and Trees of the Southwest Uplands
This is an excellent book. It does a good job of identifying shrubs and trees. It shows illustrations of: Flowers, if any, Leaves, and fruit, along with the average size of the plant. Each plant has a detailed description which helps distinguish it from similar plants. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the Outdoors, Hiking, plants, gardening, you get the idea....

Hunter's Guide to Shotguns for Upland Game6 reviews
Terry Boyer

Stackpole Books, 2007

Excellent read
Well written and easy to read, I finished the book in two sittings. This book will entertain and inform you on all the basics plus a fair portion of advanced topics as well. All material is fresh and timely, unlike books written 5 to 10 years ago. The book is nicely illsutrated with high quality color photos. The guns, loads and accessories discussed are avaialable today and on retailer shelves ...

Upland Outlaws (Part Two of A Handful Of Men)5 reviews
Dave Duncan

e-reads.com, 2008

This is what a book should be like
This is the sequel to Dave Duncan's superb novel "Cutting Edge". One of DD specialities is preventing a second or third book in a series from being stricken by the notorious "sequel - syndrom". He keeps up with the high standard he set in "The Cutting Edge". He really must have thought about the story thoroughly before he wrote it, because there are no logical flaws in it as in some other ...

The Upland Equation: A Modern Bird-Hunter's Code3 reviews
Charles Fergus

The Lyons Press, 1995

Instructive and introspective bird-hunting inquiry.
I was thoroughly engrossed in this short, but surprisingly full book. As a first-year bird-hunter reading this during the height of grouse season, I felt as though this book was probing my mind and transcribing my own thoughts onto the pages. The text was wonderfully thought out and the ideals espoused are those that true hunters wish all others believed as well. Caring and knowledgeable of ...

Hunting Upland Birds4 reviews
Charles F. Waterman

Countrysport Press, 1997

my first bird hunting book, and. a fine one it is.
A pet shop I visited (to buy supplies) many years ago had this book on close-out for a buck, and I bought it. What a well-written interesting book! A few years later when I was casting about for a new dog hobby, I re-read it. Today I am a serious birdhunter who introduces others to the sport. Selecting a dog, a gun, what to hunt, where to hunt, how to hunt. Well-written and entertaining. Book is ...
