Science Verse (Golden Duck Awards. Picture Book (Awards))22 reviews
Jon Scieszka

Viking Juvenile, 2004

Delightfully Disgusting
These poems are based upon classics, but given a scientific twist. "I've Been Working on the Railroad" becomes "I've Been Working on the Food Chain." My sixth grade daughter went wild over this collection, memorizing most of it to recite for at parties, teachers, over lunch, at doctor's appointments.... Great purchase. Middle school fantastic.

Beowulf: A New Verse Translation (Bilingual Edition)266 reviews

W. W. Norton & Company, 2001

"It is always better / to avenge dear ones than to indulge in mourning."
So spoke Beowulf, legendary warrior/prince of the Geats (a Germanic people who inhabited southern Sweden around 500 CE) and hero of the poem of the same name, a poem in Old English that is arguably the cornerstone of English poetry. I had never read this classic, but with my youngest son now reading it as part of his ninth-grade course in world history, I decided to unshelve my hardback copy of ...

A Child's Garden of Verses (Wordsworth Children's Classics)24 reviews
Robert Louis Stevenson

Wordsworth Editions Ltd, 1999

GREAT EDITION OF A GREAT WORK.
It would be interesting to find out just how many editions of this particular work have been published over the years. Needless to say, this work by Robert Louis Stevenson is one of the granddaddys of all poetry books for young (and not so young) children. If you do not have a copy in your child's library, you really should have. This particular edition is illustrated by Eric Kincaid and of ...

A Child's Garden of Verses6 reviews
Robert Louis Stevenson

Sterling, 2007

"A Child's Garden of Verses"
A Child's Garden of Verses stands the test of time. My friends and I all remember this book from childhood. I purchased three this Chrismas. The illustrations are delightful. Gyo Fujikawi has captured the poems exquisitely, especially "The Land of Counterpane".

Mirror Mirror: A Book of Reversible Verse8 reviews
Marilyn Singer

Dutton Juvenile, 2010

Mirror mirror: a book of reversible verse
What fun! A new challenge for poetry writers. An amusing way to look at what a difference reverse wording can give to story. Could create a family game with this one.

The Satanic Verses: A Novel234 reviews
Salman Rushdie

Random House Trade Paperbacks, 2008

To Be Born Again, You Must First Die
As other reviewers have noted, it is imperative that the reader have an understanding of Middle Eastern Culture, particularly India and the Muslim world, before engaging in this book. Because the pages of this book are so busy, it is easy to miss important bits, while struggling with the obvious. I found it helpful to use internet "primers" as I read the book, giving me a better appreciation. ...

The Captain's Verses: Love Poems (New Directions Books)16 reviews
Pablo Neruda

New Directions, 2009

Sensual masterpieces
I bought this book because for the long time I wanted to read something by Neruda, and this bilingual edition offered an opportunity to read the original Spanish alongside with the English translation. Since I know a bit of Spanish, this was an opportunity to practice it and improve it, as well as get exposed to some of the most sensual and inspiring poems in any language. Neruda's idiom is rich ...

The Oxford Book of English Verse12 reviews

Oxford University Press, USA, 1999

So much drama over an anthology!
It is interesting that you have what looks to be two scholars of English going back and fourth about works or how this particular edition is sub par to the one made in the 1940's. Anthologies are books pretty much gathered and published for someone in a dusty old back room office of some university to keep from being totally banished into obscurity. Take it for what it is! If the anthology ...

Commonly Misunderstood Bible Verses: Clear Explanations for the Difficult Passages6 reviews
Ron Rhodes

Harvest House Publishers, 2008

Want to understand those difficult Bible passages? Ron Rhodes can help.
When we study our Bibles, we often come across passages that are peculiar when taken at literal face value. Perhaps there is a historic cultural context that will shed light on that particular passage. Maybe there is a broader meaning to the Hebrew or Greek words than how they are rendered in our English translations. When we are faced with these types of questions and concerns, it is wise for ...

The greatness of English Romantic poetry
English poetry is one of the great bodies of Poetry in the world. English Romantic Poetry is one of the great summits of English Poetry. A Child's Garden of Verses : A Classic Illustrated edition8 reviews
Robert Louis Stevenson, 1989

Revenge of RLS
Robert Louis Stevenson gets his revenge in the enduring beauty of his poems for children, long after the beleaguered Virginia Woolf rendered him unfashionable (try finding RLS in the Norton Anthology, or others). But quality endures in the end. These were the first poems I heard and learned as a child. Yes, they are ethnocentric, but reading them and looking at the sumptuous ilustrations give me ...

Beowulf: A Verse Translation (Norton Critical Editions)9 reviews

W. W. Norton & Company, 2002

Excellent edition
This is a beautiful translation that captures the tone and tenor of Old English. Although it eschews the alliterative line essential to Old English poetry, Heaney's rendering is magically evocative of the somber stoicism and occasionally wry understatement of this seminal poem. The critical commentary provides a nice general scholarly apparatus that helps one contextualize and better appreciate ...
