This book can save lives.
I teach many children to swim, but this book can save more lives than any swimming lesson program, because it can reach so many more children. After reading Stewie The Duck Learns To Swim, children will remind their parents about proper water safety habits! They'll say things like "Mom, I want to go swimming; will you watch me?" or "I want to go swimming, but I need to have my life vest on ...

I choose cookbooks very carefully, I take it quite seriously. If I could only keep one, it would be The Art of Simple Food. The best version of everything. Give it as a wedding or house warming gift.

Staggering Genius indeed.
"A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius." Indeed. So few writers have Egger's gift. Wit, wisdom, a sense of humour, vision, style, flair, and the passion that enables him to masterfully craft such a truly genius work.

Don't be put off by the apparently trivial title
The title is cute and catchy and implies the book is a lightweight screed about the erstwhile evils of drinking bottled water. Yes, the initial starting point for Ms. Royte's inquiry was asking some simple questions about the impacts and equities of a corporation bottling huge quantities of Maine springwater. But this is an important environmental book, in the same league as "An Inconvenient ...

Shades of gray
I feel almost silly adding another review when others have said so much already. So, I'll keep it brief. This is an extremely well written book. It flows seamlessly back and forth between time periods and generations until, before you know it, it's over. And, contrary to what some others have written, it is not obsessed with race. Race, as McBride presents his struggles, can be seen as a metaphor ...

The Big Picture
Everything always makes sense when you can see the big picture. This book provides a glimpse into why events we perceive as "bad" happen, through a varied collection of individual cases. Our lives in this "reality" are just learning experiences, to expand our awareness of ourselves, we agreed to before we arrived on the planet.

Dora Wins!
Growing up in San Diego in the 60s and having read biographies of Greg Noll and Mike Doyle already, I idolized the surf scene and have followed it from my landlocked location. Dora is the ultimate enigma. Wants the attention when he wants it but wants to be elusive also. But what he really wanted more than anything, was the post WWII check out of society and never have to work, the ultimate ...

Very Interesting!
I found this book absolutely fascinating and enjoyed it from the beginning to the end. In this book you will see beyond any shadow of a doubt the effect our words, both yours and mine, have on everything in our world. The old saying, "Sticks and stones may break your bones, but words will never hurt you, will certainly not prove true in your mind anymore after reading this book. Our author ...

Exceptionally well written and memorable
Three women connected as mothers and daughters but each with tremendous burdens to bear and pass along. Although the stories are not beautiful, the writing in this book is exceptionally beautiful -- simple, direct, vivid, and tender. The author definitely knows how to bring the reader into the shoes of the characters. At times as I was reading, I could simply forget where I was and was ...

Amazing
I read this book in less than 24 hours. Having previously read "No Country for Old Men," I was worried I was racing through a book with no real finish. I was not disappointed. I found the story gripping and the prose beautiful; McCarthy can sure paint a picture. I am still haunted by the imagery.

Jonathan Harr

A Great Book about Human Nature and the Legal System
This is the best book written about a lawsuit and is a terrific teaching tool. The author had unparalleled access to the lawyers, mostly the plaintiffs' lawyer who, somewhat questionably from an ethics standpoint, allowed a journalist to witness client meetings and strategy sessions. While some of the reviewers criticize Harr for pro-plaintiff bias because of this, Harr simply played the hand ...

Good for another generation!
The first book in this series, A Wrinkle in Time, was my favorite book as a young girl. I bought this for my very bright 12 yr old son recently. After reading it, he told me that it may be the best he has read & he reads extensively (including all the Potters)! We are anxious to get on with the others as I never read them when I was young!
