The New York Times Guide to Essential Knowledge, Second Edition: A Desk Reference for the Curious Mind9 reviews
The New York Times

St. Martin's Press, 2007

Great Source For Information
The essential book of knowlege is an easy reference book and jam backed with useful information. It can answer those quirky questions that you forgot the answers to quickly and easily. When was the last time you read the Declaration of Independence? What are those wine regions in France? How do I correctly punctuate this sentence? Faster than the internet.

Oh, Yuck! The Encyclopedia of Everything Nasty54 reviews
Joy Masoff

Workman Publishing Company, 2000

That's Nasty!
I bought this for your typical 11 year old boy. He loved it, I'm not sure how much mom did. That is one very clever way to get boys that age to read a book on their own. And they learn a thing or two along the way. Heck I would have like this when I was a kid. Remember boys are going to be gross either way, might as well make it educational too!

Late Show Fun Facts17 reviews
David Letterman, The Late Show Writers

Hyperion, 2008

Late Show Fun Facts
I bought this book for my son who watches Letterman every night it is on in NZ. He is quiet and shy and this was "homework". He has to practice reading it out loud to himself during the day and read it to the family at night. It has been wonderful to see him get so much enjoyment and some hidden socialising out of this book. We have all thorougly enjoyed the book and will now need to find ...

Ripley's Believe It Or Not Special Edition 2009 (Ripley's Believe It Or Not Special Edition)4 reviews

Scholastic Inc., 2008

Believe It or Not
This is an excellent rendition for readers interested in a plethora of curiosities on earth. The book describes how the Zebrafish repairs its own eyes. There is a beautiful picture of a monster mushroom. A bionic hand is depicted along with a robotic violinist. A section has a curious museum of brain matter. The Colorado wrestling alligators are shown in a popular action pose. Lastly, a ...

An Incomplete Education: 3,684 Things You Should Have Learned but Probably Didn't91 reviews
Judy Jones, William Wilson

Ballantine Books, 2006

a good resource
This book is an excellent resource. It is written so that it leads people to "dip into" it for information that you may or may or may not know; or are unsure of. There are pictures, photographs, charts, and the style is light. Its fascinating to just browse through. I got one for each of my college aged sons, and I believe they both got some good use out of it.

Year of Wonders312 reviews
Geraldine Brooks

Penguin (Non-Classics), 2002

Unexpectedly, A Great Read
A story about the plague that is set in England in the 1600's isn't one that I would have likely read had it not been chosen by my book club. However, I'm glad that I read it, and highly recommend it to others. Even if you're someone who doesn't generally read books set in a different time period, don't shy away from this one. It may take a few pages to adjust to the language, but the story is ...

Luxury Yarn One-Skein Wonders33 reviews

Storey Publishing, LLC, 2008

Must have for the Knitter's nook
I am really thrilled with this book. As knitters, we are drawn to ridiculously expensive luxurious yarns, which we buy one or two skeins at a time. Then we get home and feel of it, rub the soft silky fiber against our cheek, and wonder what the heck we're gonna do with it. That's why this book is so perfect. With just one skein of that must-have-it-or-I-will-die yarn, this book has 101 ...

The Book of Animal Ignorance: Everything You Think You Know Is Wrong5 reviews
John Mitchinson, John Lloyd

Harmony, 2008

Addictive animal trivia
I defy you to read even a few pages of this little book and not be tempted to yell out to whoever else is in the house: "Did you know that ...?" The other person will laugh and say "You made that up!" This is a perfect book for people who love animals and/or arcane bits of trivia. It is a bestiary of 100 animals -- some common, some you've probably never heard of -- all with secrets you would ...
