New Concise World Atlas4 reviews
Oxford University Press

Oxford University Press, USA, 2007

Great for research
I bought this atlas because I wanted one as up-to-date as possible (in light of political boundaries and such), and wanted something to accompany a globe I have. There is a lot of useful information at the front of the atlas, so it's not just a book of maps. I use it for reference while taking classes for my masters (logistics and transportation) degree, and my stepson uses it for some of his ...

Our Dumb World: The Onion's Atlas of the Planet Earth, 73rd Edition106 reviews
The Onion

Little, Brown and Company, 2007

The GREATEST book ever written
Occasionally, a book comes along of such great importance that to not buy it--even if it means letting your kids go hungry for a couple nights--would be a crime. In fact, it should be a crime, and I advise you to write your local legislator. Such a book is Our Dumb World, the Atlas of the Planet Earth from the Onion. The seventy-third edition of this magnum opus offers an even more profound ...

World Atlas of Wine20 reviews
Hugh Johnson, Jancis Robinson

Hamlyn, 2008

Note - this is the SIXTH edition!
The editorial notes for this listing refer to the 5th edition, but the listing itself is actually for the new, 6th edition. I own the 5th and have gone through the 6th in some detail. It is worth buying the newer edition if you have an earlier edition. The authors have not only added a couple dozen entirely new maps, but the format itself is nicer, in my opinion, and of course, the contents ...

National Geographic Atlas of the World, Eighth Edition26 reviews
National Geographic

National Geographic, 2004

Incredible Family Resource
I've had the new atlas for 60 days and find myself looking something up every 2-3 days. It's really been fun looking up remote places like Palmyra Atoll, Kerguelen Island, the Fly River and other obscure places I read about. And now I've found an interesting use for the password protected online atlas as well. The online Atlas gives you high-resolution access to all the Atlas map plates. You ...

World Atlas of Golf: The Greatest Courses and How They are Played
Mark Rowlinson

Hamlyn, 2008

When The World Atlas of Golf was first published, it set the standard by taking a uniquely global view of the game and the architects of course design. Now, more than 30 years later, it?s completely revised with new text, spectacular illustrations, and dazzling photographs. From revered links, like St Andrews, to hidden gems, like Casa De Campo in the Dominican Republic, it covers the seminal and most architecturally brilliant courses. ...

Phaidon Atlas of 21st Century World Architecture1 review
Editors of Phaidon Press

Phaidon Press Inc., 2008

Inspiration for the concrete jungle
A magnificent book, which is indeed current to within the last year, including buildings such as `The birds nest' used in the Chinese Olympics and Toronto's ROM, but not their recently updated AGO. The buildings are described well in the text along with Architectural designs and copious images of the building from internal and external sources. The layout is done well by splitting into ...

The Atlas of the Real World2 reviews
Daniel Dorling, Mark Newman, ...

Thames & Hudson, 2008

New Ways to Look at the World
Among the biggest problems in making an accurate map of the globe is that a sphere can never be a plane. If you take a globe and try to flatten it, you are certain to stretch or tear parts of it. Cartographers get around this problem in many ways. Some flat maps of the Earth show all the land masses and countries in the right shape, but they distort the size. Some maps show all the sizes ...

Concise Atlas of World History15 reviews

Oxford University Press, USA, 2002

Utterly fascinating
For a remarkable overview of the history of the world so far - it is difficult to imagine this book being bettered. It is endlessly fascinating, and covers every part of the world and all major cultures. To have such an insight into the inter-relationship of nations and cultures and their development is rare. Well written (if a little 'dry'), and with generally good maps (some scales on the ...

Although this slim volume only scratches the surface on each location, for the amateur archaeologist it is a fascinating introduction to some of ancient civilization's masterpieces.

National Geographic

National Geographic, 2006

Highly recommended.
The new edition of Family Reference Atlas of the World represents more than a reprint: it adds some 15,000 changes and includes over thirty new pages, expanding the Europe section and adding a section of maps on the Caribbean. New locations and maps have been added since the last, with everything revamped and updated to provide home and library users alike with a gorgeous, polished contemporary ...

perfect for little geographers
My 6 year old son got this for his birthday and he loves it. Every night he reads about different countries. And lets me know the capital, languages spoken and population of each country (among other things). I am learning a lot from this too! There is a lot of information packed into this book. I highly recommend this book to anyone that is a lover of the fascinating world of geography.

National Geographic Visual Atlas of the World (National Geographic)1 review
National Geographic

National Geographic, 2008

Absolutely magnificent
This atlas is a wonderful reference tool (many thematic maps) as well as a very entertaining browse. The beautiful, colorful maps in combination with the accompanying photographs virtually transport you from your armchair into the far away land - more than a traditional atlas page does. And the 14-page section on Space is the best illustration of the solar system and the universe I've seen ...
